My little guy is sick again!!
 

Just when I thought we had this pancreatitis thing under control!! My poor little buddy, is sick again. I thought that he was acting a little strange and of course hubby thought I was being overprotective again, but sure enough we took him to the vet, and what do you know. His pancreatitis is rearing it's ugly head! :( He isn't throwing up or anything, but his blood work showed elevated levels. I am just so frustrated. He doesn't get anything but his prescription food. Does anyone have any advice?? Thanks for listening!

I’m sorry to hear your baby is sick. What is pancreatis? Did they say what was causing it?

It's inflammation of the pancreas and can be very painful. Initially, it was caused by too much fat in his diet. Even though, he has never been fed table food, they think it was from peanut butter dog treats. The vet said that in dogs this small, too much fat or protein can be hard on their digestive systems. But, this time, I have no idea, since he only gets his prescription food. :confused:

I had this happen to me nine years ago and was in the hospital almost two weeks, Dr. made me wait three months to get my gall bladder removed ( due to the inflammation of my pancreas) the risk was too great. the Dr.s said it was a miracle that I lived through it. Sure hope Zeus is feeling better and gets over it ok. Once one has an attack it can happen again, I pray it never happens again cause it is the most painful thing to go through and is very serious. Wow Patti, I am so sorry! I work in a surgeon's office and I know how painful this can be for humans. Zeus has had one big attack and this is his second small one. I am just so frustrated b/c I have done everything I've been told to do. :( Thanks so much for the support!

Up until today, he has been eating Hill's R/D. Now the vet has switched him to Hill's W/D. Hope this works!! :xfingers: I really don't want my little one to suffer anymore.

Be careful with Hill's, I've heard some bad things about it. But of course every dog reacts to it differently but I heard over time it can be bad for the doggy's liver.

Nooooooooooooo!!!! I don't think I can take anymore! :eek: I just want to find a diet that works. Thanks for the warning!

I'm sorry, I just wanted to tell you what I've been told just so you have all of the information you need. I'm sure Zeus is totally fine, just got into something the poor baby shouldn't have. Coco sends Zeus kisses :p

I am praying that Zeus gets better very soon. Maybe if you don't see a change in his condition ask your vet about another brand of prescription food. I sure am rooting for the lttle guy!

I am so sorry to hear he is going thru this again. I watch Gizmo like a hawk when he goes outside to do his business just in case there's blood in it again. We went thru a bad attack over a year ago and has had a couple small ones. I really don't think there's anything else I can do. The condition is there and I just have to deal and give him his Reglan when is needed and hope it doesn't go full blown. Poor baby, I really hope your little one is feeling better soon, it is helpless to watch. You just need to know when to get to the vet in time before the dehydration set in. Thanks Denise! And I am so sorry that little Gizmo has to go thru this too. This time was really weird. No throwing up, no diarhea, I just felt like something wasn't right. He seemed to be sleeping more and just wasn't his spunky little self! Thank goodness for Mommy's intuition. We did switch his food, so hopefully this will work. It is just so frustrating when we have no idea what triggered it.

Zeus's Mom, have you done research on a nutritional food diet for humans that support the liver and pancreas, what about putting him on a diet such as that. I had to do a lot of research and found many foods, etc, that are harmful for the liver and then there are those that help the liver, so maybe that might be a thought. Prayers that he is feeling much better and that he won't have any more attacks. Patti
Yes that was one of the worst times of my life when that happened, tubes down me for days and then I had to get pneumonia on top of it and enlarged heart. Was on matlt o meal most of the three months before they could remove the gall bladder, my hemoglobin dropped way too low and with the malt o meal it is very nutritonal so it helped build me up so I could have the surgery.

I also wonder..if changing perscription food brands would help some. :dreaming:

Yes, it is very frustrating for them and us, but the Reglan has really been a godsend for Giz. It's really good stuff if your vet hasn't already given you some. I give it to him at the first sign of loose stools or tummy grumbling and it makes him feel much better. Have been feeding Natural Life line of dog food but will check into the Hill''s. He always uses the I/D when we have an upset but need something for all the time. Hoping today is better for little Zeus, and you have a good one. ~Denise;)

Thanks everyone for all your well wishes, my little one really appreciates it and so do I! :yorkietal He seemed to be feeling ok last night and this morning, but again, he is very good at hiding it. He's such a tough little guy! He ate the new food this morning and we gave him Pepcid AC, so lets hope that this will do the trick. I guess we just have to keep trying new diets until we find one that works. I'll keep you all updated. Thanks again, you all are the best!!

Hope you baby is feeling better real soon. Have you tried an organic
type dog food? I use Natural Balance and add fresh chicken, white
meat only and cooked frozen veggies (peas/carrots, green beans) no fat
in these. I boil boneless chicken breasts and freeze some and cut one up
into little bits and add a teaspoon of chicken and veggies each feeding.
It only takes a 1/2 hr. to boil and they are always in the freezer for him.
I will stop buying peanut butter treats now that you mentioned it might
have caused your baby to be sick. Good luck and give him a hug for me.

Thanks so much for this advice. If this new prescription food doesn't work, I will try this. The vet said that he needs to be on a low fat, low protein, high fiber diet. Poor little buddy is so limited. :( Thanks again and I will pass on the hugs! :)

If he has to have a low protein diet check about the chicken because it
is protein. How about a vegetairan diet? I have seen dog food regarding
this type of diet. The better brands carry these types. Again, good luck.

How many times a day does he get fed?

I read it would be better to break up the meals into several small meals. Supposed to be less stress on the body instead of 1 or 2 big meals.

The new food may be okay. You hear good and bad about a lot of things here on YT. That's what makes it interesting. Considering the problems poor Zeus is having, I wouldn't make any changes without your vet's approval right now. It may just take a little more time for his little pancreas to heal and get more normal.
