Lately there have been so many posts on here of Yorkies sudden deaths and needing surgery etc, are they that unhealthy of a breed? My little Gracie is getting along GREAT but now I am starting to get paranoid!

Just be careful and informed I would say. I always wanted a yorkie and while doing all my reading before the purchase I have to tell you I got spooked with all the what if's.

I dont think they have any more health problems than any other small breed

She is my first small breed. She is NEVER unattended. We keep her in the livinng room with us or outside with us and if we can't watch her she goes into her kennel. Sounds like alot of it can't be helped! My friend Stacy has chihahaus (sp) and she has never had any trouble!

They don't have any more health problems than any other dog large or small. I think alot of it is breeding. Everyone just needs to be well informed.IMO.

i read that the smaller they are the more fragile they tend to be, and they do need special attention, but i assume all dogs have problems...

You know what I think it is? Unfortunately we have a lot of "quicky" members. What I mean by this is that they come onto this forum to ask a quick question about their sick Yorkie because they are worried. I'm NOT saying that's not okay (I just wish they would stay) :p, I'm just saying maybe that's why there seems like a lot. But, most of us "YT long timers" have healthy pups. :thumbup: :D

I agree. If you look at the new comers a lot of the time they have a sick puppy or are looking for answers for a problem. I think that they've turned to the internet for answers and YT comes up in their search. I know that when I found YT it was because I was looking for answers on how to raise my puppy and what to careful of.

Yes, I am a new member & when I did a google search looking for answers regarding my little guys broken leg, this forum came up. I'm new to the forum & to the breed, but plan to belong to both for a long time:)

I found this site after our Cassie passed on last Nov. She was quite small three and half pounds. Never ever did we have a health issue to deal with. She was like a Jackie Chan, oh, many times I held my breath, she was tiny but mighty.( We believe the Canine Virus was the cause of loosing her.) God gave us ten and half, many wonderful years with her and they are a treasure. We are raising Baby Blessing just as we did Cassie with the love and the freedom within our home and the enjoyment of not our living in fear of her getting hurt, and with the prayer that she will be as healthy as Cassie. Yorkies are so smart and so much a joy, to the new owners of one, your joys are just beginning, God grant you many years together. Welcome to all new folks to YT.

I am new to this forum but as you can see I have 4 yorkies. I think that you have to care for them like you would or should, your children. Keep a good eye on them since they are little dogs with big dog personalities.
