| New Furbaby and mommy!!! Hello, First let me start by saying ...I have been reading this site for about a week. I think that it is great and all ya'll are great for sharing! My little girl is Roxy. She just turned 10 weeks. We have had her for a week. I have a few questions/concerns: 1st- When I brought her home ..I got her Eukonubia(spelling?) she wouldn't touch it! Then I got her nutro ...she wont touch it....So then I thought ..maybe just plain puppy chow just to get her eating something....oh she LOVED that..but then got the runs!!!! (UUUUGGGGGG) That was like Friday and she still has the runs. (im not feeding puppy chow anymore) So then I started giving her babyfood just so she would have something in her belly. Now she wont eat that. Now I boiled chicken...she LOVES that. And I do give her Nutra-Cal every 4 or so hours because she is not eating right....(I have been doing my homework) What else can I do about this runny stool? Tommorrow, I plan on going and getting that Merrick? Puppy food that everyone has been talking about on here 2nd - How much should they be sleeping at this age? She sleeps a lot! Sometimes I get worried and wake her ...I have read about that liver shunt thing and now i have myself so worried!!!! What can I look for if that might be the case for all this? I know I will get some good advice ...Thanks in advance! Last edited by roxysmommy; 04-16-2006 at 06:25 PM. |

| Welcome to yorkietalk! I am so glad that you found us! At that age they do sleep alot I dont think that you have anything to worry about there! If you do a search on here you will find all kinds of foods that are good for these little guys, they are very picky eaters and you just need to find something that she likes!

| welcome to YT!! I wouldn't worry too much about the sleeping, as long as she is playful and happy when she is awake. I'm sure you will find a food she likes, and I'm sure you will get some suggestions on food here soon. Good luck and can't wait to see pictures of your baby.

| I went through the same eating thing with Ollie. She didn't like Eukanuba, Iams or Nutro. She did like pedigree, but that wasn't for puppies. It was some I had on hand for another dog. The lady at the vets office gave me a sample of Science Diet for puppies, the little bites, and she eats that. I talked to a breeder on the phone, the olne I am getting my new puppy from, she has a lot of dogs with a lot of different tastes. She says she has 5 kinds of food out all the time, and they eat which ever one they want. So I got some free samples of Royal Canine for baby dogs, at the pet store, and I now set out both kind. Sometimes she eats one, and sometimes the other. I also give her cottage cheese once a day. The do sleep a lot, they are like infants, they will sleep 18 to 20 hours a day. |

| Mojo is one of those that will refuse good food over pedigree or puppy chow...:P They have to many additives and can be moisty so it is tempting You can try mixing with canned food so she starts eating normally, her runs can be from switching food and stress of a new enviroment. Where in Florida are you?

| the process of switching food must be gradual otherwise they'll get the runs. mix the old food with the new food and gradually increase the porportions of the new food over a period of 10 days until you're completely on the new food. puppy chow is like junk food to them. and who wouldn't want to have a dinner of ice cream and burgers rather than a well balance meal of meat and veggies? definitely get her on good premium dog food as soon as possible. it'll be good for her in the long run. if she's refusing to eat, mix some wet food or boiled chicken with the dry food. a friend of mine sprinkles shredded cheese over her puppy's meals to get him to eat. and gradually lessen the amount of wet food, boiled chicken or whatever overtime. sometimes bunjee tries to play hardball with me and go on a hunger strike for more treats and less kibbles. but i just leave the kibbles out and he'll eventually go for it when he gets hungry. as for sleeping habits... my baby sleeps ALL THE TIME!!! furbabies are like human babies, their days consists of eating, pooping, peeing, and SLEEPING! totally normal. |

| Thanks to all of you for all your insight. I went to the pet store and got Merricks puppy plate.....at first she wouldn't eat the dry...so I thought I would mix with warm water. I was holding her at the time. She was sniffing around like crazy...so I got excited. And, YEAH she ate a little. Hey, A little is better than none!

| My pup slept about 80-90% of the time when he was 8 weeks old. He still sleeps a lot and so does my 4-year-old other dog. The average house dog doesn't have much to do and sleeps even more than most dogs do. I think I read that the average adult dog sleeps 14 to 16 hours a day. (What a life!!) Your dog sounds like mine. They hate dog food - and don't think we haven't tried a million different kinds. Their favorite food is chicken or any other meat. And, basically, unfortunately, they like most people food period!!! And - they like a variety of different foods. My dogs get wet dog food (not a lot) in the morning and have dry dog food available 24/7 (which they don't eat much of). They are good about eating their dog food in the morning because they are hungry and that is all that is available for them to eat. Evenings, they tend to get more people food, leftovers, etc. So - that's how we do it. Carol Jean |

| Thanks for the help...I might just do that with the dry out all the time and only feed her in the morning (wet food) I guess if she is hungry then she will eat. I get a little worried because she is so small (1 1/4 lb) When you say LEFTOVERS, what do you give your pups? Is there certain things that they cant have? I have always heard it is bad to give human food but it looks like the norm to a lot of Yorkie owners.
