I've got Badger on Royal Canin twice a day and then at night some cooked chicken or turkey and sometimes a bit of lamb. He also has dry treats during the day or some apple when I have one. I've tried to keep his diet as simple as possible. One thing I have tried with great success - something I remember my grandmother doing with her rottweiler/lab cross - when he won't eat his dry food is to put it in my lap and pretend to eat it making big crunching and smacking noises. I also offer some to my husband and we both pretend to enjoy this 'rare treat'. This has worked unfailingly because as soon as Badger sees that we're eating it, he eats it. I don't give it all to him straight away but just one at a time and within a few minutes, he's gulping down mouthfuls. It's a simple trick but I find it works very well when he;s being picky and I think he also enjoys the hand-feeding aspect (such attention-seekers, Yorkies!) |

I love that trick mentioned in the earlier post about pretending to eat the food!!! I also have a picky eater and I boil chicken and add a little garlic powder to the broth. She eats Hills Science Diet now because the vet wants her to gain some weight and I mix in a little of the chicken and chicken broth and microwave it. A few days ago my little one was interested in the big dogs dinner dish. Today I started feeding them together and twice today she stood by her big brother and gobbled her food from her dish just like her big bro! Don't know if you have another dog but if you do this might help. |
i would try eukanuba dry for small breeds. they also have a beef chunks in gravy in a pouch or can - i give a pouch once or twice a week just as a treat. My yorkies have always eaten the plain, dry and have beautiful shiny coats. my mom has two very picky Malteses and they even eat the dry. |
I thought I was the only one Good to know I am not the only one who feeds raw food. Rigo gets a bit and I mean just a bit of everything I feed my bassets. He gets the round circle cuts of beef bone from the butchers when my big guys get the knuckles. He is almost 9 and is just now getting to where he needs to get his teeth cleaned for the very first time. I feel it is the raw bones he gets that keeps them clean. Today, rigo has had a bite of cantelope, the raw heart of the turkey I am cooking for easter, some yoke from the eggs I had for breakfast and a raw piece of potato while I was peeling some and of course he loves the baby raw carrots. I am extreemly careful to feed him only the lean parts of the raw meats, as my vet told me his pancreas and liver cant handle fat as well as my hounds. |
pretending to eat The pretending to eat first is actually good doggie world ettiquette. The alpha should always eats first and then invite the others in to share thereby signaling the food is safe and plentiful. I was told when I got him that rigo was a picky eater, but he has not been that way for me. I think they were feeding him a food he did not like. Even the animals in zoos get a varied diet as a form of life enrichment that relieves stress and boredom. My little guy deserves nothing less. BTW, he never eats anything that resembles junk food. Only healthy stuff. |

The reason i got involved with HealthyPetNet is because I know so many people are feeding their pets some awful stuff (including my parents and their dog, but I'm working on them...). I feed my dogs Chicken Soup for the Dog/Puppy lover's Soul. They love it. When you read the ingredients it sounds good enough for me to eat. It is all natural. Several meat sources and fruits and veggies. It really isn't more expensive than Iams :thumbdown that I was feeding them from Wal-mart. |
