Merrick's wet (especially the chicken dishes) Royal Canin, Merrick's, and Chicken Soup Dry food |
Best Foods I noticed many of you are feeding Royal Canine. I do/did too. I think they are great, especially if your yorkie has dental problems, except that it has a filler ingredient which is corn meal in them. So I did some research on the best foods and their ingredients and health benefits. Here are some of the best brands (order does not matter, by the way): Innova, Royal Canin, Natural Balance, Wellness, Nutro. Among them, I found Natural Balance (blue tab) to be the most affordable AND has very good ingredients like chicken, brown ride, duck, lamb, carrots, etc. 3 pound Royal Canine costs $14 at Petco vs. 5 pound bag Natural Balance Blue tab costs $9, or something like that. So I do and did feed Royal Canine for Yorkies now, but I am going to mix and then try switching to Natural Balance. |

Royal Canine Mini Yorkshire :) Whew I know about busy I order Royal Canine Mini Yorkshire online a 3lb bag cost 11.99 with the shipping it comes to 20.94. I hate the shipping costs however that verses gas and time it is well worth it. You can go to The Royal Canine web site and it is in breeds on the last page. :animal36 Yorkies Rule |

This has been a confusing topic for me as well. I would welcome any advice as to what is the best food for yorkies. My 1st yorkie isn't a very good eater. Since he eats so little, I didn't care about the expense, I just wanted a premium food with all of the vitamins/nutrients that he would eat. I started with Nutro Ultra Choice. He liked the Puppy formula. However, when it was time to switch him to adult food, he didn't like Nutro's Adult formula. I then switched to Natural Balance which he liked and would eat. He was on this for awhile. Then, I had gotten some recommendations from a local pet food store and from his daycare that Innova Evo was an even better food than the Natural Balance. So, I switched to Innova Evo, which he also liked. My 2nd yorkie's breeder feeds Iams to her dogs. So, when I brought him home, I continued to feed him Iams. It was difficult to feed each dog a different food as they tried to eat each other's food. My 1st yorkie's stomach couldn't handle it. I just didn't know which food was causing the issue or if it was from the combination. So, I started feeding both dogs Iams. They both are doing well and they like it. :aimeeyork |

I used to feed my 3 boys nutor dry food, I recently switched them over to "People Food" I cook for them twice a day. Usually they get a little bit of dry foot, some chicke or pork or fish, with steamed veggies and brown rice for dinner. For breakfast, their first meal, I usually cook them eggs mixed with steamed veggies and a little rice. I am their personal chef I guess. James |

After exhausting research, my answer is. . . Excellent food for our precious yorkies is just something that none of want to skimp on. I've changed foods slowly over the past year. I was really looking for a natural food from a reputable company, no corn, no wheat, no by-products, human grade. I also wanted taurine, glucosamine, chondroitin, and pro-biotics, which are lactobicillus, for good digestion. I had my boys on Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul, also the Adult formula. They loved it. But then, my bigger than standard guys, were getting too fat. Chicken soup didn't make a "lite" formula. So, I sat for hours researching on almost every natural food website. The best for us, without a doubt, is WELLNESS. It has everything I was looking for and more. The boys loved the weight management and regular dry, and they make 6 varities of canned. For allergic dogs, Wellness makes Simple Foods, with one kind of protein and one carb. Check ingredients very carefully. You'll be surprised. Also, I think it is a good idea to add your own sources of protein and fruits and vegetables. It makes the dry kibble more appealing, and some say, easier to digest. Another thing to remember, the food you choose should be readily available. I also learned that "elevated feeders" are a lot more healthy for eating and digestion. I bought mine from "PetEdge" on the web for only $19.99. This is an absolute necessity for any loveangels with collapsed trachea problems. It's a wonderful feeling to know you are doing the best you can for your "kids", and hopefully prolonging their lives by giving them very healthy foods. |

I just started using Natural Balance about 6 weeks ago and I am so pleased with it. Pebbles coat has become so shiny. It also is very healthy and is non-allergenic. We are using the sweet potatoe and fish version right now and I am going to use the venison and brown rice every once in a while to give a variation. We love it! |
You will find several threads on here regarding this. Many people do not like Royal Canine - it has corn and other things that often times cause allergies and is also called a filler. Stomper used to be on it until I researched to find some better human grade foods out there for him. Just to name a few (there are tons of other great ones out there) I found that the following are good: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul Innova (this is what I use) California Natural Solid Gold I know that these are all human grade and have tons of fruit, vegetables, chicken, salmon, etc. in them. Most of them have to be purchased at speciality stores. You'll find tons of advice here. Good luck! |
