Yorkie Weight Problem!!!??! Hi. I have a 4month old yorkie female. She is currently 4.0 lbs. Her mother is 7 pounds ( but is overweight) and her dad is 5lbs. Now I am expecting my yorkie pup to be anywhere from 5-6lbs, which is a nice healthy weight. Ok this is the problem. She is, like I said, 4 months and 4lbs. Does this make sense or is my yorkie overweight. She is only 4.5inches at the shoulder. So she is not tall. Should I keep her on a strict diet? Because the girl can eat. I feed her half cups twice daily of pedigree puppy chow. When should she typically stop growing? Is this normal? Does anyone think she will lose the puppy weight as she matures? Please give me any helpful and respectful advice. I have done alot research but am still new to this breed. Thanks alot.... Eddy :) |
I don't think she should be on a diet. Sometimes they will gain all of their weight rather quickly and then just stop. Daisy is only 14 weeks and she was 3.5 at 12 weeks.. We go to the vet again on Monday so I will find out her weight again than. |
Thanks for the replies. Very helpful to me and I do appreciate it. I am just concerned because she gained 3 pounds in less than a month. When I got her, she was only 1.5lbs. The breeder weighed her right in front of me (as well as her parents) This girl just hit a growth spurt or something. I know with my Miniature Pinscher, she gained so much weight within months. She was probably like 6-7lbs, then she dropped to her stable weight of 5.5lbs. Overall, I am just concerned. Please keep the helpful and respectful advice, comments, and suggestions coming. So what age (although I know it does vary) Does anyone think she will stop gaining weight (weeks, months year ???) |
Daisy was the same way girl.. I keep calling her my little stuffed tick... LOL She was barely 2 lbs at 8 weeks and at 12 was 3.5 lbs... |
Hahaha.....I am not a girl, but anyways, but 4 pounds at 4 months? It just isn't adding up to me. My little girl has rolls and she is somewhat chunky but I didn't think she was that heavy. I don't know. Just looking for comments so thanks! |

Eddy, when you run your hands down her sides, if you can feel the definition of her ribs, then she is not too fat. You can't just judge by how much she weighs, a lot of factors are involved..... her bone structure, muscle to fat ratio, etc. You might up her activity level a bit so she gets more exercise. |
Hello. Well, I know for a fact that Pedigree is not a bad or unhealthy brand dog food. Maybe it is just not the right brand for my yorkie. If I feel along my yorkies side, I can feel her ribs with no problem. I am going to be looking into the Innova brand some more. She also does get plenty of exercise. She has all access to my whole house and will with the backyard when the weather is better. I will look into a new diet for her. Can anyone give me an estimated age when she might stop gaining and growing? Thanks |
Henry just turned 4 months today and he's about 4 pounds...his mom was 5 pounds, and his dad 7 pounds. my vet says this is perfectly normal and that he shouldn't get any taller...just bulk out a little bit. since we got Henry at 8 weeks he's been growing a pound every other week or every few weeks. he eats a half cup of his dry food a day, plus treats....he won't eat much more than that. so i think your dogs weight sounds pretty normal to me. |
Hi. I want to thank everyone one for their suggestions and comments. I guess I was just a little too concerned. Like I said, very new to this breed, and although I have done research, those are just mainly averages. Well, I am going to find a new better diet for her. Also, I am taking her to the vet, so he can give her another check up, deworming, and distemperment. 4 months is still pretty young. The growth will slow down but she will most likely continue to grow (structure wise) until about 6 months and get a little heavier after that. My female stopped growing at 6 months and weighed 5 1/4 lbs. Now at about 19 months she is almost 6 lbs and is not overweight. I think the muscles just continue to mature and grow so they fill out a bit over the next 6-12 months after their skeleton is done growing. Pedigree Puppy . . . rice, ground corn, chicken by product meal I also agree with changing her food. While she may not be overweight now, she will be eventually on the dog food she is currently eating. Pedigree Puppy . . . rice, ground corn, chicken by product meal-first three ingredients not so good. She would have to eat too much to get enough nutrition. |
Hello, thanks again. I am going to be changing her diet. I am going to take her to the Vet. Hopefully, this will help me figure out the best results in regards to her health and lifestyle. So at about 6 months? That does not sound too bad. I think she will be about 6lbs maybe even 6.5lbs. As long as she is healthy. This is all I really care about, so thanks! I agree with changing her diet also. Not sure if I'd recommend Innova EVO as the protein is 42%. They have Innova Puppy which would be better. Missy will be 4-1/2 months this coming Thursday and she just weighed 4 lb 8 ozs at the vet this morning. It sounds like they are all pretty much in line with each other. Hello. I am still doing my research but I am either going with Innova Puppy (I meant puppy not EVO) and the other choice is Solid Gold. These are the only two that are sold around my location. Where is Innova sold? I found that Solid Gold is the only one (out of Solid Gold, Innova, Natural, etc) that is sold nearby. I will ask my Vet on Monday which one would be the better choice. Atleast these to brands are more recommended than Iams, Pedigree, Purina, Eukanuba etc. right???? I am checking reviews and such. Hope for the best! Thanks! |
Make sure that you "gradually" add a little of the new food - don't do it all at once or she might get an upset stomach or diarrhea. Good luck. Missy eats Innova Puppy and Muffie eats Innova Senior. |
Hello. I will gradually mix. I never do it at once. Pedigree is actually the second diet my pups have been on. I started with Iams. I think I am finally on the way to the best lifestyle and diet option for them. I know they have had their diet switch a few time, but I just want them to be healthy. I don't care if they are 20lbs. If they are healthy, than they are happy. That's how I see it. So I will put the pup on Innova Puppy, and the older ones Innova Adult. I just edited this post because I found a store that sells both Innova and Solid Gold. Thanks everyone! Keep me posted on anything regarding my little girl's health. |

I wouldn't give her any wet food. It isn't good for the teeth and Yorkies are known for having bad teeth anyway. I would just let her get used to the new food and go from there. Don't give any rawhide, greenies, dental sticks - I only give Nylabones period. You still have to watch them closely. I would get a puppy toothbrush and dog toothpaste and get started brushing the puppy's teeth. It's never too soon. I put a thread on last week that will help you with that. Go to search and type in: Brushing Teeth or Dental Cleaning. |

4 Attachment(s) Hello. I am still somewhat torn with what to go with Solid Gold or Innova Puppy. I have eliminated wet food from their diet, because it is unhealthy. I just thought I would ask if the Innova and Solid Gold brands were better. I do not give my pups rawhide or dental sticks. I brushed their teeth once daily or atleast five times a weeks. Is that alright? Please, anyone let me know what you think??? She's a cutie! I'm not really sure how often I should be doing it, but now I only brush Chewy's teeth about once every 2 weeks. As for the food, they are both great and it will be a matter of which she thinks tastes better. I have heard that Solid Gold is tastier though ;) ... |

Oh Gosh!!! Don't take my word as gospel, that's just what I do :D Your vet can definitely tell you how often is best. She looks perfect! Don't worry, you are doing the right thing by changing her diet and you are taking great care of her. She is growing well and healthy, that's all you can ask for! |
Thanks everyone! I think changing her diet is the best thing right now too. As a puppy, they need all the protein, fat, etc as they can get. Now is not too late to feed her healthy and from now on too. I am still undecided on what the new diet will be (between Solid Gold and Innova) as I have been saying. Lola is NOT a pick eater so she should do fine with either or. However, Penny my min pin is very picky, so maybe Solid Gold would be better for her. I am going to speak with someone at the store to see what would fit my pups lifestyle's better. Thanks |

Penny - Can't imagine why you think your dog is overweight!!!! She looks great to me - and actually slender. She is built just like my Yorkie, and I definitely wouldn't call him fat. And he has been a fast grower also. I have no clue what he will weight, but he's not going to be small. He is 6 1/2 pounds at 5 1/2 months. His mother was a whopping 12 pounds and his father was 4 1/2 pounds. So - go figure! I suspect my pup will weigh 7 or 8 pounds. I'm very happy with his weight so far. He is still very small and also easy for me to carry, bath, etc. Plus, he's very active and quite a jumper, so I'm glad he has a couple extra pounds on him. Again, I wouldn't worry about your pup's weight at all. My dogs eat Premium wet food once a day (not a lot). Dry Iams food is left out for them always. And, they get people food (leftovers, etc.) also. They are not overweight and are happy and healthy and I don't worry about their food. They get a wide variety of different foods. Carol Jean |

Looks like she's doing fine on the food she's on. Why are you changing food? If she was underweight then you should worry. She'll be whatever weight she's genically inclinded to be and you can't change that; just try to keep her healthy and happy! If the Mini Pin is overweight try throwing a stick or toy for him to fetch a little more. Pedigree puppy is a premium dogfood isn't it. :yelrotflm |
