Flea & Tick in Florida Well I did a dumb thing. I left with my two minions from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and I forgot to get Heartgard and Nexgard from my vet. I can't find it here. Any Floridians have issues with fleas on their dogs? Mine are generally inside but go for walks frequently. As for the Heartgard, my parents are going to ship me the pills. |
I am in South Georgia, about 90 miles north of Florida. As for fleas here it depends on the time of year, where you are, if the area has been treated for fleas. I would never trust that rest areas or unfamiliar land would be flea free. JMO Lisa |
I think I might be confused. You said you can’t find Nexgard or heartgard in Florida? It is what I use over here in Maryland and no issues finding it. You do need a prescription for both though. Florida is a warm climate so I’m positive there are fleas and even ticks. |
I meant I can't buy it without a prescription down here. They won't accept my vets prescription. I guess I can go on chewy.com |
Is there an over the counter flea and tick treatment that anyone would trust? |
Depending on time of year, we can have fleas here...more importantly, mine have gotten fleas on rest stops/lodging along our I-95 route between our home and upstate NY to visit family during holiday trips. Be careful... |

If your babies have to be spayed / neutered that is a must do, wise choice to do it now and get that flea and tick protection ASAP. How old are your lil minions. |

Agree with Matese that it's important to do the spay and neutering sooner than later. As your babies get older, there will be more complications and MORE COSTS. Females can go into heat and then the spaying cost tons more. |
My mom got the prescription from my vet at home and is mailing it to me. As for the neuter, they go in Feb 3rd. They are not going to like me! Is the healing time quick? |
These dogs are amazing when it comes to surgery, they bounce back so fast it's unbelievable. Do not be deceived by their frisky behavior, follow your vets instructions on recuperation time. and no jumping until they are healed. That's great that your mom is sending you the script. What surprises me is.....you have two intact males that are soon to be a year old and they are not fighting over dominance. Some years back I knew a gal that had 2 male litter mates, brothers. At 7 moths old one was dominate and was always fighting with the other, fighting to the point of drawing blood. She had to separate them in different rooms when she went to work and until they were neutered. You are very very lucky your boys do not fight. You are adding years of health to their lives by neutering and decreasing aggressive behavior in them. They will not be mad at you lol. |
