I live in a small town but our animal hospital is fairly new and state of the art... up to date on everything.. Office visit is $25 but if you have vaccinations it is waived. Vaccinations are $23 for a puppy shot. Seems to be very good compared to everyone elses cost. |
OMG! It cost me $160 for Sheila's second shots! It did include an exam, deworming (precautionary) and poo sample blah blah... but still! |
Chicago -- my vet is $28 dollars to walk in the door which just includes the "look-over". A follow-up is $23. Meds, of course, are extra and run about $20 to $25 each and up. |
Our vet charges $50 anual office visit and all other visits for shots, medications are not charged and office visit. If they are sick, they are charged again. So far I've paid $552 for Cricket and Bubba They need one more round of shots and revolution and then the packets of revolution. That will be about $400. The revolution is expensive! |
harbinger you got screwed...... $160 is WAY to high..... it costs me $12 for walk in, and puppy shot was $7 and that included a dweorming pill..... i think we walked out of the vets office paying $27 for a check up, one puppy shot, one prepaid puppy shot, demwormer, ...... his neutering costs $35.... and a follow up checkup to the initial checkup is $6 |
oh my i guess i'm really lucky! i go to carmel, ca and i never had to pay a office fee for coco getting shots. i only pay 14.00 for the shot but no office fee. :D |
Different cities, different costs..... wow! It's very apparent that the variance in vet cost is correlated to location. Here in NY, I pay an office fee of $58 per visit, and shots were $30 and up each!! To get Mason neutered, it costs $320 and I am trying to save up just to get him fixed |

For Mojo the vet office fee is $35 dollars...but since me and my bf together have more than 1 dog it does not come out that bad...also we have a "hook up" in the clinic and almost never pay for it...:) The vet is very nice and not that expensive...the vaccinations have a different price, if i am not mistaken...but it is around 20-30 dolars each. |
vet bills I was a vet's receptionist for awhile. The first visit is always expensive due to a full check up that you usually do want to have done... the following visits CAN be just for the vaccinations IF YOU REQUEST THAT when you make your appointment..."My pup is doing fine. I just need the next round of shots. I don't even need to see the vet." Be clear when you make the call and see if your vet will allow this in his office. Yours may not, but it can save you hundrends of dollars if he has this practise. My vet administers the shots, but I do not take up his time with questions or idle 'chit-chat'. That way he doesn't lose money while he's with me and I don't pay an office visit. (The dog is taken to the back by a vet tech while I simply pay the vaccination fee. The dog is brought back to me and we are on our way.) You can also purchase some of the usual vaccinations through the internet or at a feed store. As a breeder, I give the 3 way or 5 way vaccinations myself... but there are a few only a vet can administer. For those, I still go to the clinic. Glenda |
My vet has this thing called the "Well Puppy Program". It only cost $32 for six months of service. All his visits are covered under that one cost..including bloodwork, fecals and exams. I have to pay extra for the shots or any medicine. I have taken in him sooooooooo many times because of silly things, but it didn't cost me a cent. I looked on the internet and other vets offer this........so, it may be worth looking into for the new puppy owners. |
I live in Charlotte, NC - just to walk in the door down here, it costs $30-50. (I called everyone listed in the book). And the cheapest was $30, but it was PetSmart's vet. However - when I have time, there is a vet located in the town I grew up in (about 1 hour away), where my parents still live. They do NOT charge anything for the visit and you only pay for medicines. And the medicines are sooo cheap. An example - my mom usually took her dog to that vet, but they were closed and she needed our dog to be seen, so she took him to the other one in town. For the exact same meds, same brand and everything, they charged her $60 more. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. When I have time to go, it is definitely worth the trip. But, you have to wait for HOURS b/c so many people drive from out of town b/c it is so cheap. I am shocked at some of the prices listed in this post. I knew it was bad, but not that bad. I just wish every town had a vet like the one from where I grew up. Good luck to you guys! |
My vet, whom I also work for, charges for each individual thing -- shots run $10-12 each, rabies being the cheapest. No walkin fee. Surgeries range from $100 for a cat neuter to $500 or higher for dog ortho surgeries, anal gland removal, etc. Parvo pup's care is much higher -- can run $500-$800 for a three day cycle of treatments, fluids, etc. There is a $75 charge for after hours visits, emergencies such as car accidents, etc. He euthanizes for free if your a regular client (usually older dogs who have no quality of life ...) and he's the busiest vet in town. There are cheaper vets here in Tuscaloosa, Al., but some of them don't have laser capability, better treatment options, aftercare, etc. Nor are they as service oriented. I am pleased to be in Alabama!!! Cost of living and yorkie care is cheap! (Which means, of course, I can spoil Luca Dean all the more!) |

I know that sounds cheap and yes I\'d be willing to pay more if I had to but our vet is a wonderful man who loves all the animals he sees. He even has three Yorkies so I know that he takes extra care of Buster :D . I think that\'s why I like him sooo much. But don\'t get me wrong I\'d rather pay a larger vet fee then pay more for the shots, etc. |
