| Apoquel... Time to try? One of my girls has relatively mild allergies and they generally flare-up when mine do (when the pollen count is high). Her face and feet get a bit itchy; usually I can give her 1/4 of a benadryl morning and night and I think I see a difference... I know it's not the most effective treatment. My vet gave us a prescription of Apoquel a couple months ago and I've debated giving it to her. Yesterday, I woke up with horrible itchy eyes and sure enough she's been itchy the last two days... So, it has me trying to figure out if it's time. She's so small and has been diagnosed with pancreatitis or enteritis (from two different specialists) so I'm just scared to give her anything that isn't completely necessary... Anyway, it looks like vets and owners much prefer Apoquel to Cyclosporine (which I used for my Pug and always wondered if an unexplainable health issue could have had something to do with the immunosuppressant) so I may be way overthinking trying this drug. I see some people on here swear by the Apoquel and I'm just wondering if you would use this on a dog with pretty mild allergies. If so, would you give it only when the allergies were bad or keep her on it indefinitely? Have you seen or suspected any side effects while on the Apoquel (my main concern is the GI issues she already has)? It looks like the drug is somewhat new which I guess also concerns me. Thanks so much for any feedback!!! |

| It's a miracle drug, I would not be afraid to use it because it is very safe medicine. Benadryl would have to be give multiple times a day to be effective.

| Thank you!!! I'm really not sure if the Benadryl helps or just calms her a tad... I just give it when she's itchy but the last couple of days have been bad for both of us. So... I'm thinking I should try the Apoquel. How long have you used it? Is it something I can just use when she's itchy or does it need to be given all the time to be effective? We see the vet next week for bordatella and I'll review with her. I'm not typically this nervous with things... I think it's just as small as she is & having her so sick last year has me a nervous nelly 😬 |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | YES, I would use it in a heartbeat! I've used it for a couple years now - and it's a miracle med, just like Atopica. During flare ups, you must give it every 24 hours to be effective. I have to give it year round bc the allergies are year round. If seasonal though, you can give during that time only. Atopica isn't quite as flexible as Apoquel but can be used seasonally as well, if planned out properly for the ramp up time.

| Thank you both very much! Weather here has sure been strange here too and it seems allergies are on & off throughout the year. I think I’ve decided to give it a try this weekend since it’s a long weekend & I can be home to watch her a few days. Do you need to give the Apoquel on an empty stomach like with Cyclosporine/Actopica? I can’t remember if the vet mentioned this & need to take a look at the prescription again to see if there’s any specific instructions like this. Thanks so much again! |

| Just a quick update… I gave Monroe the first dose of Apoquel last night. I don't think she knew what to do with herself this morning because there were no itchy feet or face to scratch! It looks like the vet has her on 2x per day for 10 days then once a day. So far she had not be itchy at all today… how crazy & awesome! Sooooo excited about this! Thank you so much again for you input. This definitely looks to be the miracle drug as you said! |
