Frontline does not work for me here n MD.

Frontline (active ingredient fipronil) has been on the market for a long time, it has started to lose effectiveness for some dogs in some areas (still working fine for many). We used to use revolution but it was very spendy and I wasn't doing a good job being consistent with picking it up from the vet (for shame) so we would lapse and then couldn't go back on it without another heart worm test (our plan covers a heartworm test once a year). After many lapses it became such a pain and just today we finally did the twice yearly injection for heartworm protection. So far so good, Lilah is acting normal, no reactions and I just can't tell you how relieved I am to know she is protected from heartworm and I don't have to think about it again for six months! Heartworm wasn't a big thing up here before but with the large quantity of dogs being shipped up here from other areas- especially here to Portland- the heartworm population has grown exponentially in the last few years! My own vets office had two cases show up last month and whereas that might seem laughably small to areas where heartworm is and has been prevelent for some time, just a few years ago it was "no big deal, not something in our area". Eek!

We have been blessed to never have fleas despite not consistently doing preventative flea care. We typically bathe immediately upon return from play dates with a friend who might have fleas and we have wood floors, spend a lot of time indoors- the barn cats get flea medicine. We have been pretty social lately and it is summer time so we have jumped back on the monthly flea Med train and are using advantage II. I didn't realize revolution had no tick coverage- anyone know off hand if advantage II does?...

Advantage II does not kill ticks. It works for fleas and lice on dogs. K9 Advantix has flea, tick, and mosquito protection, but one of the ingredients in it is particularly toxic. It can't be used with cats.

My vet recommends Frontline and only sells that and Seresto collars. Since he combines both Western and Eastern medical therapies, I believe he is very careful with medications. He does not like giving pills for flea and tick control. I had Katie on Frontline for several months, and it worked at the time. I couldn't find the Frontline when flea/ticks season started again, so I purchased Advantix, and it worked for a while. I didn't realize Advantix was so toxic, though. Katie had never had even one flea on her, but three weeks after I gave her a treatment using Advantix, she got fleas, and I was very upset. At that point I realized the dangers of Advantix by doing more research on it. My friend gave me one of her dog's Nexgard pills, and it helped to rid Katie of the fleas. Since my veterinarian doesn't carry Nexgard I get prescriptions from my vet so that I can purchase Nexgard from a local vet. It has worked great, and Katie has had no problems with it. I'm sure Frontline is safer, but I have heard so many people in the Northeast have had their dogs get fleas and tick using it. My veterinarian's practice is in Lyme Country since its in the Hamptons, but he doesn't feel the Lyme shot is safe for Katie, even though she is extremely healthy. I am always conflicted when I give Katie Nexgard, knowing my vet prefers topical medicines for that, but I also worry about what would happen if Katie got ticks on her. I have great respect for my vet and have been with him since he started his practice twenty years ago.

We were using Heartgard for heartworm prevention, but now that Interceptor is available, he changed Katie to that.

We have the frontline at my work but not the frontline plus which covers ticks, and the advantage but not the advantix :( hmmm. You leave me with things to think about miss Lisa! :)

How much frontline did you give to your dog?

Is it safe to give a 2.4 lb yorkie, 10 weeks old, any flea medicine? My vet said no, but she has fleas I cant get rid of, and because of the fleas she has tapeworm. I use nexgard on my other dogs, but they are 10 lbs.
