Thank you for your encouragement. Ruger is home and doing really well. Yeah diet, that's hard. Would you please tell me what you are doing to keep your baby from getting in this shape again. It's very frightening. Obviously you are a great mom if it's been since 2011. How old was she when she was diagnosed? | Quote:

I agree that Linda is an excellent mom. She has seen it all as a nurse to humans and through her work with Yorkie Haven Rescue. Her girl Cookie who recently had pancreatitis was on a strict diet for PLE (lymphangectasia). As she wrote, it's not always diet.
Some dogs never have another occurrence of pancreatitis, some may have it again 10 years later, others have recurring episodes. Try not to worry too much. Getting treatment as soon as possible, as you did, is the best thing. | Thank you both :)
As Kristen pointed out, Cookie was not on a diet for pancreatitis all these years. She is on a home cooked diet for lymphangectasia and IBD.....she had an episode of pancreatitis a couple of weeks ago so her diet is being adjusted to a lower fat.
Some vets recommend low fat diets for pups who have had one episode of pancreatitis. One of my pups was in ICU with pancreatitis a couple of years ago and he has been on a lower fat diet since. I really think it varies from one case to another. I have had pups have one episode and never again...and then I had one who had multiple episodes over a few years.
As I said, and as Kristen also pointed out, it is not always diet related.
I would try not to worry too much. You know the symptoms now and it is wise to always get to a vet quickly when they start the vomiting. They really can go downhill quickly. You may never have this happen again! |
