| Basic proporion theory for cooking dog food Hi, The last batch of Wellness Turkey and Sweet Potato food we bought smells strongly of fish. It doesn't seem to be harming our year-and-a-half Yorkie but we've decided to start making his food ourselves so we actually know what's in his food. We figure we'll start with some boiled turkey, sweet potato and barley and freeze 3 days food in individual baggies. We've seen recipes but wonder how in general to figure out on our own the proportions of meat to sweet potato to barley. We're also wondering how to figure out what is a meal serving. Thanks. Linda |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Homecooking is just wonderful and fresh for these kiddos - so this is awesome! BUT, you do truly have to balance it correctly and get the supplements correct or you could do more harm than good. Many here have used balanceit.com or petdiets.com

I have been home cooking for my dogs for 15 years. All my dogs currently have diets from petdiets and I really like the nutritionist there. The food has to be weighed and you have to add an appropriate supplement for home cooked food. If you don't, you run the risk of serious consequences for your dog. It's best left to professionals to guide you. Online recipes with the exception of petdiets and balance it are probably not balanced properly. BalanceIt has free recipes that use their all-in-one supplement. Petdiets has a very small charge for diets but uses a less expensive supplement option. I've used both, but I like the simple approach of petdiets. I mostly use chicken thighs, sweet and white potatoes, green peas, and vegetables. Good luck!

| The supplement I use is a product from rayne in Canada and balance it also has Canadian patents so don't rule it out without checking. Best wishes.
