Keeping a yorkie hydrated Hi, my yorkie was recently hospitalized due to dehydration. I was wondering if it would be okay to mix Gatorade with my yorkie's water to help keep him hydrated? |
Use Pedialyte as water.....plain, unflavored.....I use that as water whenever my dogs have any stressful situation, like house full of visitors during Holidays, after any surgery, car trips, etc......just be sure your baby is indeed drinking it.....mine are all used to getting it, so I dont have an issue with thay.....if you are giving by syringe into mouth, 10- 12cc's every 2-3 hours will keep baby hydrated. |
I think I'll try giving him some via a syringe. He's been ignoring his water bowl. |
Well, My puppy is 4 months and we have had her almost a month and she drinks sooo much. I've heard that's not unusual for this breed but now I'm wondering there might be something wrong with her. I haven't worried about her getting dehydrated because of this. |
I dont know if you have ever syringe fed or watered a pup.......if you go into the mouth way back on the side, it will go into his mouth closer to the back of his tongue and he will swallow better.....you wont waste as much water, so you know you are hydrating baby enough. Go slow so you dont choke him....1-2cc at a time, allow him to swallow, then continue.... |
I wonder if Gatorade might have too much sugar in it. |
I would be more concerned with the electrolytes and the balance of electrolytes/salt content in Gatorade.....Pedialyte is specifically made for babies and their electrolyte balances....do your dogs like Gatorade? Pedialyte is better for them. |
home made chicken broth After luxating patella surgery, my Bella was not interested in drinking liquids. The vet recommended giving her pedialyte, but she turned up her nose at it. However, I found that she absolutely loved home-made chicken broth made by boiling a whole chicken in water with NO SALT, followed by refrigeration to solidify the fat, which could then be easily removed. One chicken made about five quarts of broth, and I froze the extra broth, which I never really needed, since after a week or so, she was drinking regular water on her own. |
Drinking You could try soaking the kibble in water to get more into him. My dog also does not like drinking water and the above suggestion re chicken broth is great. I have found that if I just put a tiny bit of chicken breast in the water, he drinks it all up. They just need a smell of something good to get them to drink or eat sometimes. Hope some of the above posts help. |

It is fine for any age......stress can cause so many different behaviors....not eating, not drinking, etc....you can mix it half and half with their normal drinking water, or mine drink it straight....but they are used to it...it has a different taste than the water they are used to drinking, so you might want to get them used to the taste before you are in the situation when it is really a good thing for them to be drinking it! |

They don't get dehydrated unless there is an illness and vomiting or diarrhea......and honestly you cannot prevent it if it is going to happen. You cannot give them the amount of fluids they need once dehydrated...they need a vet. I have never given my pups anything but water to drink. |
