15wks free feed or schedule I work from home and I was wondering if it's better for free feed our little one who's just under 3lbs or do a routine. She's underweight because of the situation she was in, the last time she was at the vet at 13wk she was 3.6lb but due to the home she had she was 2.6 or 2.7 yesterday at the vet when we got her. I don't want to stuff her but you can feel her spine fairly easily. |
I am far from an expert but until her weight gets up I would let her eat as much as she wanted anytime she wanted |
I am a fan of free feeding pups. |
If its the only puppy there free feed. If you have more then one dog keep them separate and free feed. That way you know the pup is the one eating |
I free fed until about 14/15 weeks while housetraining; Veau and I just couldn't get it down. Around 15 weeks old I put her on a scheduled feeding: 5 am, 11 am, and 5 pm(i take up water by 6 pm). Housetraining has become easier and her bowel movements/urinating more predictable. She actually eats all of her food now as well, instead of picking over it when she was free fed. Puppies less than 14 weeks or 3 lbs I would free feed. |

Since she's underweight, definitely free feeding, at least until she is a normal weight again. I've been free feeding my Bella ever since she was a puppy, and at 2 years, she is still a healthy weight--not overweight at all. |

It's really totally up to you. If you have only the one pup, then free feeding is really easy and convenient - and most dogs raised on free feeding don't overeat unless there is something going on (ie like Cushings). Since she's underweight, you may want to free feed so that she can take advantage of any time she'd like to graze. I feed at meal times 2x a day - but I have 4 dogs, lol, so it's a little tougher to free feed here. Plus, our Wylie has Cushings and even though it's managed, he still has an overactive appetite. |
Scheduled feedings, equals schedules Poops and a better chance that you will have of getting potty trained sooner. Puppies have tiny bladders and tiny intestines and typically will relieve themselves within the first 15 mins after eating or taking a drink on water. |
