Please respond! Can dogs get Bordatella from the nose drops? My puppy was perfectly healthy and happy. She went for her second set of shots and also got the Bordatella (don't know if I spelled it right). Four days later she began sneezing and coughing. I took her to the vet and the diagnosed allergies. Three days later, she is worse. I saw a different vat that still said allergies and prescribed Benedryl. Two days later (today), Bonnie had severe trouble breathing this morning and began panicking. I gave the Benedryl and turned on the hot shower. She is now a little settled but will not touch even her treats. I am taking her to th emergency vet in an hour. What should I ask? I made a video of her breathing episode this morning to show to the vet. Any other ideas?:mad: |
It is actually common for them to get bordatella from the nose drop vaccine....vets will deny it but they use a live vaccine in the drops....I have experienced this with 6 of my dogs....now the vet will charge you for treating the respiratory issues that nose drop caused, and it is going to cost you $$, and the baby will feel lousy, and it can easily/usually takes MONTHS for the disease to clear up.....another reason they will not admit pups can get kennel cough from the drops. I always tell my new owners if they want to give the kennel cough vaccine, insist on the shot. "Dead viruses" are used in the shot, the drops are made from "live viruses". My dogs do not leave my property so they are not exposed to the disease, so I personally do not give that vaccine. |
Thank you for the response. I did ask the vet if it was possible but they did say no, that they sometimes sneeze a little. It but they don't get the virus. I will make sure that I tell the vet today how everything happened. |
After I had 6 pups come down with it, I finally connected the dots, and became VERY insistant and persistant about that nose drop stuff....and the vet FINALLY did admit it "was possible they could have gotten the virus from the drops", but HE did not think that was the source! Then he went on to explane WHY he always gave the drops, "because they were much more effective against the disease"....well super, and WHY is that? "BECAUSE THEY USE THE LIVE VIRUS IN THE DROPS AND NOT THE SHOT"....well, there you have it! |
Needless to say, I am very upset and angry. I did not know the nose drops were live and I did ask the vet prior to getting them if is was safe. Of course she said yes. Now, I'm hoping that we can get it under control, especially now that she has been exhibiting symptoms for 8 days. I will be leaving now for the vet. Will update later. I too insist on the shot! I've also had them come down with it after the nasal. Vets can deny it all they want, it does happen! |
If the virus is live I imagine it's possible. I would mention it to the vet. My yorkie is 7 and has gotten the nasal bordatella every year with no issues and my moms rescue we have had for four years hasn't had any issues either. |
Yes it is possible they can it from the nasal drops. Mine only get the Shot now and I have never had a problem with the shot. |
I only do the shot for Bordettla - and only if I need to, if I am going to shows or boarding them. |
This is good to know. Daisy started having a bad day sneezing hard all day long when she got the nasal. I started asking for the shot for that reason. Our new vet said they don't do the nasal because they always end up wearing more of the stuff than they get in the dog. I don't know why they would do the nasal if they know it could give them Bordatella. |
Ok...so they did a breathing treatment, X-rays, a culture, antibiotic injection, antibiotics to take home, cough medicine, and said continue Benedryl but increase dose and take 3 times per day instead of twice. If she is not "dramatically" improved by tomorrow I am to bring her back. Otherwise return in one week. Cost before insurance $520 After insurance $71 She is breathing better and is sleeping now. I'm hoping when she wakes up she will want to eat. |

Poor little baby. I'm so glad you took her today to get treatment. I have never given Bortadella to Katie nor any of my dogs in the past. My vet never recommended to me. I hope your little girl gets better soon. |
The vet would not say the drops were the cause but said that it is possible but unlikely in his opinion. However, the culture may give a clue. I won't know for a few days what the results are on the culture. |
