Home cooking help needed My vet suggested that I try home cooking for Zoey since she is getting tired of her rx food. He gave me the website Balanceit.com. I am having difficultly getting anything from this site. My computer does not like the site! Do you home cookers know of some good sites or recipes I can get for Zoey and her pancreatitis issues? Thanks for any help you can give me. |

Homemade Low-Fat Dog Food Diets - Whole Dog Journal Article |
Gina, Your vet will have to approve the recipe and there are two options for pancreatitis. One is moderate fat restriction and the other is more fat restriction. You should ask your vet which diet is appropriate. Then you basically fill it out and they fax the diet to your vet for approval. If you have trouble, you could email Dr Delaney at BalanceIt and ask him for help. I would not use any diets you find online as they are likely not balanced by a vet nutritionist. |
I would love to fill out the form but my computer will not bring up the page. Also, Gina was my darling girl that passed in 2010. I'm Cherie lol. |

What browser are you using? |
I have been called Gina many times but I just never mentioned it wasn't my name. No need to feel bad. It happens. My browser is internet explorer in aol. It is Vista os. |
here's a couple of kindle books (I think they also have paperback version) that are geared towards either sick or good health of the dogs, might run these by your vet. Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats - Kindle edition by Richard H. Pitcairn D.V.M.. Crafts, Hobbies & Home Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com. Home Cooking For Sick Dogs: 5 Ingredient Recipes For The Crock Pot - Kindle edition by Janie Knetzer. Cookbooks, Food & Wine Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com. |
I have a kindle so I'll look into the books. Thanks. |
I personally will only use diets formulated by a vet nutritionist. I presently home cook for three of my pups. One has lymphangectasia and she was diagnosed in 2011...I credit the vet nutritionist with saving her life. You might want to consult with a vet nutritionist .... you can find one at: www.acvn.org I use Balance It. |

Then I took the liver detox capsules (hey can't hurt!) ;) |
I would vert much like to talk to you about your pup with lymphangectasia. I have a 12 year old diagnosed with the same about 2 years ago. We see an internal medicine vet and nutrition vet. Abigail eats a home cooked diet of sweet potato, crab and many supplements. We have tried many diets but this one seems to work the best. I worry about her everyday. She weighs 4 pounds. Right now her weight is stable but has not gained weight. Her albumin continues to be low but stable. This is a hard disease to manage. I would love to know what is working for you. Thanks in advance. Amy |

Oh great! I'm so glad that you went with BalanceIt. Dr. Delaney is soooooooooooo nice and helpful and he is a veterinarian who is also a member of the ACVN so he is a board certified veterinary nutritionist. I've been using the product for 5 years for my dogs. This is unlike some of the authors of the books people have recommended who have no real credentials and are just making stuff up to sell a book. Cherie: let me know if you need any help! I'm not an expert but I am pretty good at some of the practical tips of home cooking!. |

We see a vet nutritionist and internal medicine vet as well. I do not get The Whole Dog Journal. Abigail eats a home cooked diet of sweet potato and blue crab. I add many supplements per my nutrition vet. Abigail is also on prednisone. I would love to stop it but internal medicine doctor said to wait. Her albumin is low but stable right now. Before prednisone her albumin kept dropping and so did her weight. She weighs 4 pounds now. I am constantly searching for ways to help her. Abigail was on Balance It for a year but her potassium went way high so she had to come off and now I use human supplements so she gets less potassium in her food. Since coming off the Balance It her potassium has been good. Both vets we see are wonderful! I am so blessed to have such knowledgable and caring vets to care for both my baby girls. |

Yes, you are blessed to have both...many people don't have the same kind of vet care. So glad that Abigail is doing so well. :) It is so good to see pups with PLE doing well...some years ago it was basically a death sentence. When Cookie was originally diagnosed I was so upset thinking I was going to lose her. The veterinary community has come a long way in understanding this illness. |
It is interesting that she is on crab....sounds expensive. I'm wondering if my dog Daisy can try crab. I may have to ask our vet nutritionist about that. |

I received my recipe yesterday for Zoey. I ordered the supplements and will start the cooking when they arrive. |

I have a great scale and thanks for the offer. On the paperwork from Balance It they recommended to not start the home cooking without the supplements because the dog can notice the taste has changed and not want it. |
