Home cooking help needed
 
My vet suggested that I try home cooking for Zoey since she is getting tired of her rx food. He gave me the website Balanceit.com. I am having difficultly getting anything from this site. My computer does not like the site! Do you home cookers know of some good sites or recipes I can get for Zoey and her pancreatitis issues? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I home cooked for Lou for his fatty liver issues and pancreas issue. I found an article that might help. After the last bout of pancreatits he went to I/D and did well on that but I made his food prior for several years…. One caution with making your own food is make sure you either make only what you need and mark when you made it so they don't get sick on food that has gone bad. I ended up freezing portions of two or three days at a time and switching up the variety. Also important that the dog has vitamins ask your vet about that. It really helped my dog.

Gina,
Your vet will have to approve the recipe and there are two options for pancreatitis. One is moderate fat restriction and the other is more fat restriction. You should ask your vet which diet is appropriate. Then you basically fill it out and they fax the diet to your vet for approval. If you have trouble, you could email Dr Delaney at BalanceIt and ask him for help.

I would not use any diets you find online as they are likely not balanced by a vet nutritionist.

I would love to fill out the form but my computer will not bring up the page. Also, Gina was my darling girl that passed in 2010. I'm Cherie lol.

I have been called Gina many times but I just never mentioned it wasn't my name. No need to feel bad. It happens. My browser is internet explorer in aol. It is Vista os.

here's a couple of kindle books (I think they also have paperback version) that are geared towards either sick or good health of the dogs, might run these by your vet.

I personally will only use diets formulated by a vet nutritionist. I presently home cook for three of my pups. One has lymphangectasia and she was diagnosed in 2011...I credit the vet nutritionist with saving her life.

You might want to consult with a vet nutritionist .... you can find one at: www.acvn.org

I use Balance It.

no prob :3 I plan to get at least one of these books eventually for my girl(s) the Dr. Pitcairn's book has some really good ratings. Like I said, wouldn't hurt to run the books by the vet to see what they think personally :3

I know it saved my dog's life also. He also was given some liver detox capsules human grade that I sprinkled on his food twice a day. In 3 weeks he was a new man…boundless energy, like he was 5 years younger. Diet makes a HUGE difference.

Then I took the liver detox capsules (hey can't hurt!) ;)

I would vert much like to talk to you about your pup with lymphangectasia. I have a 12 year old diagnosed with the same about 2 years ago. We see an internal medicine vet and nutrition vet. Abigail eats a home cooked diet of sweet potato, crab and many supplements. We have tried many diets but this one seems to work the best. I worry about her everyday. She weighs 4 pounds. Right now her weight is stable but has not gained weight. Her albumin continues to be low but stable. This is a hard disease to manage. I would love to know what is working for you. Thanks in advance.

You mentioned that you use diets from Whole Dog Journal. I personally would not do that, but that's me. I used a board certified vet nutritionist for Cookie. She was on prednisone for a long time .. he took her off of it this year. So, diet is all I am doing. She is on sweet potatoes and tilapia and Balance It as a supplement. Her food stays the same and her weight remains the same at all times.
