| Ear Wash What is a good ear wash? I try to clean her ears once a week but I am concerned that maybe I'm not getting them clean enough. When I took her yesterday for her "Day of Beauty" her report card came back that her ears needed cleaning. So, I must not be getting them clean enough. I know that once in a while she will paw at her right ear when it's bed time. She doesn't do it a lot so i didn't worry about it...guess I should have. So, how often do you use ear wash and how does it work? I guess I could watch a utube video. |

| I use a flea comb with tightly spaced teeth to comb the ear hair daily. This helps prevent wax and debris from building up. After baths, I use Vet Solutions ear wash. Not a whole lot. It is available on Amazon. #1 All Systems also has a good one. You can buy it through Cherrybrook.

| I've been using the Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced for a couple years on my pups. I know you can get it at Petco and my vet also sells it...I use this stuff every other week when we do baths (the Epi-Otic contains a drying agent so I do it after the bath). I basically just squirt some of the solution into each ear and gently massage the base of the ear area for a couple seconds and then let the pups shake out the solution. I then wipe out the outer ear. My pups haven't had any ear issues (no infections or smelly ears) so I guess this routine is working for us! Here's the one we use...a bottle lasts a long time! A flea comb, huh? Didn't know that. Q-tips were what I was told to use to clean her ears. I was shown how to do this but I guess maybe I'm just not getting in there good enough because I don't want to hurt her. I know their ear canal is not like ours but I am still very careful. With the flea comb, how does that get down into the ear or does it not go down into the ear? When you use the solution do you just drop it into the ear and then massage the ear or some other way? | |

I would be very careful with Q-tips. There was a member here who had one break and she ended up having to take the pup to the emergency room to have a doctor remove the end of the Q-tip from the dog's ear. Never put anything like a Q-tip into the ear canal. I only use the Q-tips or cotton balls on the visible part of the ear. Most ear cleaners come in a bottle with a pointed nozzle to put the cleaner into the ear. You can also use an eye dropper, which might be better so you know exactly how much liquid is going into the ear. The bottles are a little risky for putting too much. You don't want to go overboard. You also have to be careful that your dog doesn't squirm and end up with the cleaner in or near the eyes. Most ear cleaners have a drying agent to reduce moisture -- that is why I tend to use it after a bath. Yes, I massage the base of the ear after putting a little cleaner in. Then I let them shake their heads. I use a cotton ball to dry any excess off their ear and remove dirt/grime. The instructions should be on the bottle.
