| Fish oil AND coconut oil? I have a little foster pup who's former owner was only feeding him chicken & cheese. As a result he's pretty skinny & has a dry, dull coat. I've got him on a good quality food, and he's already gaining weight . I want to give him a fish oil supplement, and am wondering if it's ok to also give him the coconut oil I've been giving my other pups? Is it ok to give both, or should I choose one or the other? It just one, which is better, fish or coconut?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I can't say which one is better bc what might work for one doggie may not for another. I don't know if I'd give both - as you might get some looser stools and/or deplete the Vit E stores. Why not do the best of both worlds and alternate them...like every other day, or every other week? That would work . And bless your big heart for taking the little fella in! What's his name?

| In humans fish oil has been said to cause prostate cancer. I would use omega 3 not fish oil. Although getting him on a good dog food may be enough.

| I agree with Ann... or you could start with one oil for a month or so then add the second one. I used to give both to mine with no ill effects. They are two different kinds of oils, fish oil provides the benefits of omega 3's and 6's, and is more similar to a fat re: digestion, so watch for any signs of pancreatitis. Coconut oil acts differently as it is a MCFA (medium chain fatty acid) as opposed to fish oil, which is a short chain fatty acid. CO has no cholesterol and will boost metabolism along with improving the skin and coat. Can be used inside and/or outside the body. And congratulations on your new addition!

| I use this brand Omega3 and it is recommended by Dr. Remillard who is a vet nutritionist. It seem to work very well for us. Amazon.com: Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet, 90 Soft...

Also, I found this thread while searching for Coconut Oil topics. Would this be best for the itchies or the coconut?

| I was just reading more reviews and it sounds really good. I just really don't want to have to pierce a capsule and only give her a half of it a day. Still just wondering if this fish oil is better or should we try the coconut oil.

| Thanks for all the responses! I've started "Baby" (I hate the name lol), on Nordic Naturals omega 3. He's doing great! I plan to wait a month & try adding coconut oil. I gave him a puppy cut to remove some of his dry, damaged hair, and I can't wait to see how it comes in! Do I need to add vitamin E to the omega 3?? I was reading the ingredients, and it lists: anchovy oil, sardine oil, and d-alpha tocopherol.

My Daisy is 7 lbs and she takes one capsule every day. You could also go every other day. The fish oil is better than coconut oil for itchies.

I've been using this product for about 5 years. Lately, I've added a little coconut oil to my girls food for flavor since she is picky these days.
