jes well thank you for letting me know! I was worried because sometimes I will do this in the major summer heat and they love it. |
Thank you for posting this. I have also given mine ice water and had no idea this could happen. Edit: read the above post, it's a myth then? |

Since the stomach is made of so much muscle, I can see why this made the rounds of FB, blogs, and forums. But I agree w/ snopes in that I highly doubt ice can, in and of itself, cause stomach cramps and/or bloat. |

Ah, the interwebs! :p |
Bella loves ice, and I always prechew it into smaller pieces for her, just in case. I also pretreat the ice by soaking it in water so that it is not super-cold. I don't want her getting frostbite in her mouth, or brain freeze (if that's even possible for a Yorkie, LOL!). |
I have a couple of pups who love ice....sometimes I just let the ice drop to the floor from the ice machine. :) |
I have been told by a vet that ice can break teeth my mom has also been told chewing on ice for humans is a big no no to because it will also break humans teeth. |

Chewing ice "occasionally" won't break teeth. If you chew ice constantly, then yes, your teeth can possibly be damaged. My pups love ice, and I give them crushed ice from the freezer as a treat in their water-it's fun to watch them bob for it with their paws. Ps. I can tell you that I am never without a cup of ice to chew, and I have been that way for a solid 5 years, and my teeth haven't broken. I empty the ice machine at my house and both of them at my office, several times daily, in my constant need to chew ice. Is ice really that much harder than kibble? Our ice is kind of soft and slushy when it's crushed,,, |
Someone posted this on my husbands Facebook page and our vet answered back saying its safe to give them ice. Was this what crashed Facebook last night? |

I blame my Sonic addiction on my dogs wanting the leftover ice. They love it. If you don't know Sonic, they have the BEST ice. LOL |

Interesting. All of it! I'd say if it's natural for them to eat snow then why not fresh ice. Where are you Ms. Alaska? We need your advise. Ok I'm being silly! |
What you let them have as puppies affects what they can handle as they get permanent teeth. Sig our Heeler was always trying rocks as a pup until we finally broke that bad habit, but she never broke a tooth on them. I give Ginger ice cubes now, getting her ready for teething which will be starting soon. I think they learn how far to push it if started early with the baby teeth. |

I'm not big on proving things, it's my observations over the years, just like skin babies, you learn by burning your hand on stove or falling out of the cherry tree. Take that away and you have someone who never experienced what happens if you goof. I know Ginger tried to crush the ice at first, now she shaves it, I'd rather have her learn on temp teeth then permanent. Now the big question, wait for it Which is harder, a Ice Cube or a Steak Bone/Ham Bone ? But I'm sure no one gives dogs Bones, might break their teeth, lol! |

I have to add that even if your vet says ice is "Ok" - a veterinary dentist will not say that is ok! |
