Help! Itchy furbaby! my sister wanted me to post the following about her furbaby, Mojo. Mojo is half yorkie and half schnauzer Mojo is 3 years old. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old but just in the last 6 months, he has begun itching and scratching. It seems to flare up when he goes to the groomer. He gets bathed with an oatmeal shampoo that is formulated for dogs with itchy skin. My vet has put him on a benedryl tablet once a day and I've been using benedryl cream on all of his itchy spots. Nothing seems to help. I don't have any carpet in my house, he doesn't have fleas, he doesn't go outside, and he is on a limited ingredient diet. I need some help. My poor doggy is just miserable.:confused: |
Oatmeal shampoo is made from a grain, and can cause the same reaction to eating a grain for a dog sensitive to it. Bathe the dog in a regular shampoo and conditioner, and tell the groomer to stop using the oatmeal shampoo on him. |
A regular people shampoo or doggy shampoo? |
Either will do. If using people shampoo, be sure to use conditioner after as it's a bit harsh compared to doggy shampoo, but it won't hurt him. I've used people shampoo/conditioner for years with no problems. |
Oatmeal shampoo shouldn't be used. A shampoo formulated for dogs is needed (people shampoo is the wrong pH and can cause flaking). The vet can get a medicated type that can help with itchies. If this problem started at the groomer I'd go over every single thing that they use on the coat and even the detergent that they wash blankets in (if dog is kenneled while there). Laundry should be done with a gentle detergent. Benadryl is usually given more than once a day. It doesn't work for all dogs. This may not even be allergies (although it does sound like it). No skin infections? Food accounts for around 10% of allergies in dogs. It is most likely something in the environment. There are several things that can be tried (allergy testing and shots, Atopica, Temaril-P, different antihistamines, etc.). If the vet only gave Benadryl and isn't interested in going farther or doesn't have a solid direction then it will be faster and easier to just go to a dermatologist. |

if it's a bacterial infection on the skin oatmeal will actually feed the bacteria. I would want the vet to be checking what the cause of the itching is instead of advising you some short term fix with benadryl. Get some blood work done and check your dogs organ and digestive function. I would recommend you get a probiotic too. |
His skin will have red spots that look like a blush on a girl. The spots are about the size of a nickel to a half dollar and aren't raised but are warmer than the skin around them. He really likes having benedryl cream and gold bond lotion rubbed on but I suspect that it's because the itchy spots are being rubbed. |
What are you feeding him because often a food sensitivity can lead to the likes of this |
She is currently feeding him Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Sweet Potato and Fish. |
I've seen a lot of issues with fish lately, white fish in particular and too. Do you mind if I peruse the ingredients and give my personal opinion. |
That would be great! She says he is really miserable. It's bad enough that he wakes her up every couple of hours at night. |

Well sweet potato is your first ingredient and you really don't want that in your food, I see the fish is salmon and there is canola oil and potato. Potato is starch, canola is corn, sweet potato is fibre. What dogs really need in their diet is mostly meats. You could make the suggestion that she look for another food, once that doesn't have so much fibre starch and grain and avoid peas and beans too, they are very starchy. |
We really don't think it's a food allergy. He's been eating Natural Balance LTD foods for a couple of years with no problems. I think she's going to change his shampoo and see if that helps. I told her not to change everything at once so that she can figure out exactly what's causing the itchies. |
