Max's Itchy Skin Count Max on the list of allergy dogs! About 6 months ago he started getting little tiny bumps on the lower part of his back. Unable to reach it with his paws he was constantly biting at it and wetting the affected area. He also rubbed his body on furniture to find some relief. Of course I took him to the vet to find out that it was an "environmental thing". I didn't get any answers but the antibiotics cleared it up beautifully. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when he started getting the bumps again! Ugh. They are little bumps that are dry and resemble scabs. No food or any type of changes in his activity. We have an appointment with a dermatologist next week. Wish us luck so that we can figure out what's bothering my giant itchy Yorkie. Does this sound familiar to anyone? |
I am sorry about Maxs itchiness I hope he gets some relief from the dermatologist. My Jewels gets a littleitchy in the winter but she doesnt get bumps. I think its from the dry heat because the winter is the only time she has problems |

I hope it goes well w/ the Derm. Vet Derms are so amazing, I just love ours - super smart and so skilled diagnostically. It sounds like he had pyoderma then, if antibios cleared it up...? Pyoderma is def allergy related...Wylie always gets a few bouts a year, poor kiddo. For year round allergies, your choices are usually: OTC antihistamines, Temaril-P, Atopic, Apoquel, or allergy testing and desensitization For seasonal allergies (certain pollens etc), you usually use: OTC antihists. Temaril P, steroids Vet derms usually recommend allergy dog be on a fish oil as it's anti-inflammatory. I like  Ark Naturals , as I like the way it's formulated. |

Thanks for your replies! Ann, he was on Simplicef which seemed to clear it up nicely; temporarily. Apple217 - I don't think it's the food, although i bet everyone says that! He's been on Fromm for about 2 years. I switch their flavors all the time which contains a variety of proteins - salmon, whitefish, chicken, beef. I gave Max a bath 2 days ago. I used an oatmeal conditioner that I haven't used in ages and it seems like it's really helping his skin! The bumps are disappearing and I'm debating postponing the appointment. |
chester is a itchy dog especially come allergy season, I use no dryer sheets or softner, wash anything he is in contact with a double rinse, fish oil on his food, vacum frequently and use a air cleaner and use no air freshners or any of that stuff. I use temaril p when the itching is really bad, and sometimes just a warn water rinse will sometimes help, good luck |

Our Wheaten Terrier has always had allergies(over bred, immunizied,and chemicalled) , but is much worse seasonally- September/October and February/March. We have found that any lawn chemicals- neghbors fertilizer or bugcontrol- really set her off.As do any (floor) cleaners or detergents... We keep her on Fish based grainfree food with no "snacks", supplimented with probiotics to help control her tendency to yeast, and digestive enzymes,extra veggies. MinkSheen shampoo works well, but rinsing is the biggest help, She gets an immediate cool rinse if she starts a scratch cycle.She no longer gets any immuniziations or flea/ heartworm control.(she is 13!) The two yorkies have benefitted from this regime as they are scratch free! |
Just dropping off some thoughts for Max. Nothing to add except with the recurrent bumps/infection it is good to see if they can find a cause. |

As some of you may remember we had these problems with Laddy. He had literally clawed and chewed his coat out. Then I read a post LadyJane had made about using a half water half vinegar rinse on him and leaving it to dry. You would be amazed how well his coat is doing now. That and GNC conditioner seem to have fixed his issues and the vet has taken him off his meds. It is really worth trying. They do have a slight vinegar smell but it is better than watching them be miserable. |

It's like having a hair appointment and waking up that morning only to find out that your hair came out fabulous! I'm sure Max will start breaking out tomorrow since it would have been the day after the appointment. I do imagine its a season allergy or something in the grass (pesticides?). I've actually read a lot lately that many dogs are starting to show sensitivities to whitefish. Perhaps eliminating that from the diet and see if you find a change. |
Have you heard of nutriscan. It's from dr jean dodds and it's for testin food sensitivities. You may want to ask your vet about that too. Some great advice being given here. Just saying. |
dog Just a thought my poodle had terrible itchy skin. I took her to the derm dr. and he said feed her a venison base food. I did and she cleared up. I hope sweet Max gets relief soon. |
Apple cider vinegar diluted with water is great I keep it in a spray bottle. If your dog has seasonal allergies giving him a rinse with this will help clean the fur of anything they have. Contacted outside and it's also healin for any bumps or scratches on the skin. You can also add some straight to the food. |
Yes yes it was me that scared the allerderm. I'll start a thread about it. Karen, nutriscan is not accepted by dermatologists or immunologists so I question the validity of that +$200 test. |
Thanks for everyone's help! Max seems to be doing well at the moment. I'm anxious to try what I ordered - it should be here in a day or 2. |

Tomorrow we are going to the specialist. Max is flared up and worse than ever but he's suck a good dog. He never complains and stops scratching immediately when I remind him. I'll let everyone know what happens. |
