Has anyone ever fed Orijen dry dog food to their yorkies?
 
Hi I am considering switching to the Orijen brand dog food . I am currently feeding my yorkies the Wellness core small breed and for my smaller girls I give them the wellness toy small. I don't really have an issue with wellness but I have heard someone say that it is made in the same company as diamond and I know they have a few recalls in the past years. I was considering either the adult formula or the regional red? I would appreciate some feedback about which brand they used and how their yorkie tolerated the food? I am also going to check with my vet to be sure it will be a good food for them before I decide to switch. Thanks for any advice.

Wellness stopped their business w/Diamond after the last recall fiasco...
I would personally feed Acana over Orijen.

What is the major difference between Acana and Orijen? I just saw that Orijen has more protein I think?

Yes, Orijen is higher in protein thus making it higher in phosphorus. For a kibble, I think it's too high in protein...their kidneys don't need to work so hard to digest it. I'd rather be feeding a high quality premade raw dog food (which I do:D).

I love orijen:) my girls did well on it. I just recently changed them to arcana pacifica to see if my girls do better with fish instead of chicken

Does anyone have a preference over Orijen or Acana? I know somebody that put her yorkies on the Orijen puppy but I am looking for an adult food? How do your yorkies like the Acana pacifica? My yorkies have always been on either chicken or turkey? Is fish better at all to feed daily I know it wuld be good for dogs with food sensitivities but none of mine have that.

I prefer Acana. Less ingredients (a bit less complicated of formulas), less protein (I honestly feel like that anything over 35% in kibble is useless), I've heard of less problems on Acana (I've read about loose stool, etc, on Orijen more often). I just think it's a better choice for 95% of pet dogs out there. We have fed Acana with great results over the years I must say.

When I used to feed kibble (I now feed raw) I fed Orijen and really loved it. I don't think you can go wrong with either Orijen or Acana. Neither are too high in protein for a normal, healthy dog.

What do you call too high of protein? Nutrisca Lamb formula has a 30% protein.....is that too high for yorkies? Just curious!

I fed Origen for a while and it made Kaji fluffier. As in chunky. It's too high in fat for couch potato type yorkies. I now switched back to Lotus, which he loves.

Do you think that Acana would be a better choice? I have 3 of my yorkies that are a little overweight so I would like a food that will keep them at an ideal weight? Would the fish formula be good at all. They have always eaten the chicken formula. I have also talked to my vet and they have never heard of the food? I don't think it is that new because I saw that my local pet store had it for a couple months. I would appreciate any feedback.

Personally, I don't view any kibble out there as too high of protein for a healthy, normal canine. For example, look at Orijen's Regional Red analysis...it has 38% protein, 18% fat, 5% fiber, 25% carbs and the rest is misc ingredients. This type of diet is just fine with me as it tries to mimic (within reason) a natural diet for a canine...which would be more protein than anything else.

Just like for us, a high-carb diet can often more easily translate to overweight kiddos bc carbs are so easily converted to fat (and much more quickly too!). Whereas proteins are long-chained chemicals and not as easily or quickly converted to fat. So, for me, given all the overweight animals we're seeing now - I prefer a higher protein diet overall. I don't even view it as "higher" protein, actually, I view it as "normal" and appropriate protein for this species.

Have you ever read Orijen's White Paper, btw? Excellent! It's probably one of the best papers I've read on canine nutrition, to this day (and it's an easy read too): http://files.championpetfoods.com/OR...hite_Paper.pdf

LOL...LOVE that you said, um, "fluffier" - too cute. Another one I like to use is "it's just the winter skin, that's all". :D

I can't say winter skin. We don't have winters! :( Fluffier it is for us!

Wow, very interesting article! It makes me feel better Nutrisca's protein and fat being with in the guidelines of proper nutrition. My three are doing awesome on this food! It also has no grains or potato. Mine get the Lamb formula because of skin and tummy issues. The lamb agrees with them better than the chicken! At least that is what I am assuming. No more itching, flaking or soft poops!
