deer antlers for chewing Good Morning everyone! have any of you ever given your furbutts deer antlers to chew on? my neighbor saw some the other day at pet smart...said they were REALLY hard...I have given the pups many chew items and they can ALWAYS chew (BIG) pieces off...Had 2 of them almost choke so...they don't get them anymore...ever try the deer antlers? and were they able to chew off pieces? Thank you! |
Good morning I got macaroni one at Petco he chews on it so far hasn't chewed any off I watch him. |
I've never tried antlers, but I've heard they're too hard/tough for little dogs to break. Another thing you might try are non-consumable raw meaty bones. I use Bison back/rib raw bones for my 3 and they can't consume the bone - they just chew off the bit of meat that's there, and then gnaw on the bone afterward, cleaning their teeth. |
My brother gives them to his dog a lab/pit mix. He says that it will train her to find deer when they go hunting. Id be afraid that mine would break a tooth on them so since my babies wont be out hunting any time soon or ever we'll stick with our pig ears !! :D |
The vet dentist Callie went to said they where to hard and can break teeth. |
I've heard of the most chipped/broken teeth coming from antlers, so I'd probably opt to stay away. Jackson wouldn't chew on them anyway, so it was never an issue for us. |
Toki seemed to like them a lot...we used to get her the split ones so it was easier for her to get the center part which she liked the best. She would whittle the antlers into sharp points and sometimes I'd find blood on the ends...also very painful to accidentally step on so I stopped giving them. We've kind of moved away from edible chews (antlers, himalayan chews, bully sticks)...we use mostly Nylabones now...if we do edible chews, we use the dried sweet potato ones but those don't last really long. With the Nylabones, I have to get a pretty big size and the durable ones for heavy chewers because my pups will get chunks off the small ones recommended for their size. |
Antlers are bone. |

They use them to train the dogs to find antler sheds, not deer lol. It's illegal to use dogs to hunt deer. (At least in Texas it is) |

Thank you everyone! I need to find something they can't break pieces off of...the kibbles don't seem to keep their teeth clean |

My dogs love antlers. I've never had issues where they break chunks off. When my APBT was a puppy, he did break both of his top puppy canines in half. No problems with the little dogs ever. |

pigs ears I noticed a mention of pigs ears. I am just curious, aren't they high in fat? I have a schnauzer prone to pancreatitus, so have to watch fat content. |
If you can get the slices I'd use them as the marrow is exposed and soft. I threw Teegy's big one out when my friends Bichon broke her tooth on one. You are better off with raw meaty bones for chewing they will definitely enjoy it more and you can serve them frozen, but stay away from weight bearing bones and beef bones, they have been proven too hard and have been known to break teeth |

Yes my vet has warned me away from these |
Leo, my 4.5 month old has been chewing on the same antler for the past 2 months. He doesn't chew on it often, and his teeth are fine. He prefers Bully Sticks, though. |
Leo loves antlers. They've really helped with cleaning his teeth, too. Yesterday I had to break a part of his antler off because that particular end was getting to the point where I knew it could break off in his mouth and he could choke. I think just pay attention to the antler and your fur baby when chewing on it and you should be fine! :) |

I get the Himalayan Chew at Petsmart which are Yak bones and our puppy and other dog loves them. Check it out. I haven't noticed any chips and we call our puppy piranha since he chews everything and generally destroys anything he chews. Comes in small sizes. Just google and you can read about the bone. |

one of those personal choice things, I've seen many pro and con arguments on this |

Here is an article from the dental clinic I go to and some of their treat recommendations. I am not a rawhide fan, but remember that this article was written for dogs in general not for small breeds. I kind of like the frozen veggie idea. Frozen Carrots as a Doggie Chew Treat? |
I don't do antlers. I, too, am afraid of broken teeth and that just wouldn't do for my show girls :(. My guys gnaw on Churpi Chews and an occasional buffalo ear. The ears are about the thickness of cardstock, translucent and don\'t seem to be fatty. After re-reading all of the information on them, they may actually be from cattle rather than buffalo - they are from free range grass fed animals and are antibiotic and chemical free. Not only that they are very reasonably priced. I get them from my favorite on line doggie treat store - petflow.com |
