Need Help finding Dentastix Replacement!! So...my older yorkie is obsessed with Dentastix. Most of his evenings are spent figuring out ways to get me to give him a dentastix...but lately I have been finding pieces of them wedged in the back left corner of his mouth and I have to stick my finger in there and pull them out. It's starting to scare me!! Princeton is VERY picky when it comes to treats, chewies and food in general. Besides Greenies, which he can no longer have for the same reasons I want to stop the Denta's, I haven't found anything else he will chew on. I would like to find something else to replace the dentas or else he is going to drive me NUTS begging for them. I have tried the following treats... Nylabone drummies... Bare Naked Dentasticks.. Busy Bones.... Pure dog treats that look like the Busy bones... Bully sticks.... Pure dog treats(look like the Beggin Strips but last longer) He doesn't like any of them. Can anyone think of some SAFE chew treats that I haven't tried yet?!? Does anyone feed any of the dried jerkey? I believe Happy Hips is one brand that has them, but they look like they are tough and will last as a chewy for a while. Are these safe to feed?? |
Happy hips is form China I believe and all treats from china have a risk of making your dog sick and or killing them in my opinion. There was also a USA brand of chicken jerky that was recalled recently. I would look into a dehydrator and you could do your own chicken and even sweet potato. |

Lola gets Himalayan chews and we're currently trying whimzees large alligator chews from petco. So far they're breaking off in very small pieces and one lasts her like a week. I don't full trust them yet so she only gets it under close supervision. I agree if you want to feed him jerky, make your own. |
I will have to try the whimzees!! |
Mine LOVE Beams from The Honest Kitchen, we get the 12" Tall ones: Beams - Natural Dehydrated Fish Dog Treats | The Honest Kitchen Happy Hips is by Dogswell, I'm not sure about the other ingredients, but their chicken jerky is from China & is Made in China: Quality Assurance Where are your products manufactured? Most DOGSWELL products are manufactured in the US. Some of our treats are manufactured in China, where we hold these facilities to the same stringent quality standards we maintain at our US facilities. DOGSWELL sources its ingredients based upon where we find top quality ingredients and a high quality supplier whose facilities and practices meet our safety testing standards. Why are the jerky treats made in China? China is a country where dark meat is more popular due to its inherent fat and flavor. DOGSWELL believes it is less wasteful to obtain our white meat in China where it is abundant, rather than sourcing it domestically, where white meat is less available and held at a premium. Not only do we care about your pet's health by sourcing only the healthiest meat available, we also practice sustainability by reducing as much waste as possible. |
I have been giving Ozzy the Everest chew from this & that Canine Co. He has had these since last June, he was 6 months old then. He is my first Yorkie and I took away the rawhide bone after reading some tips here and gave his these. He goes crazy for them, they are made in the USA, and are 100% natural. He also loves deer sheds. |

Do you know if they come in different flavors?? I bought a 2 pack of the small alligator chews today....one was a tan alligator and one was green. At first NOBODY wanted either of them...but after Ricky started chewing the brown one, the boys started fighting over it. Of course...I tried to police them and give one the brown and one the green...but neither of them wanted the green one. They only had eyes for the brown alligator. What crazy, picky pups I have?!? |

[QUOTE=mimimomo;4345859]Mine LOVE Beams from The Honest Kitchen, we get the 12" Tall ones: Beams - Natural Dehydrated Fish Dog Treats | The Honest Kitchen Buster loves these as well, even more than his Bully sticks which was a surprise. I get the large ones and the cut them an place them in the small hole end of a kong holder. Kong Blue Dog Toy, Small - Rubber Dog Toys | VetDepot.com |

Thanks!! I just checked it out and it's a bit confusing...they talk about the stuff that's in it....like they say that vitamin c and k and beta carotine is in the Green one...but they don't say whether it's exclusively in the green one or whether they all have vitamin c and k in them. It could just be a case of "I want what you have!" Prince didn't even want anything to do with the treat...that is until Ricky started paying attention to it. |

I wouldn't worry about the vitamin stuff, it's probably such a small amount it doesn't really do anything other than change the color. Lola has had the green and orange ones and doesn't seem to prefer one to the other. BTW she's only 5 lbs and I bought her the large ones, she does fine with them. I'd end up throwing away the little ones when they were half gone for fear of her choking on it. |

yes , i think the different colors are mainly to do with the ingredients being all natural and not so much to do with flavor.. |

That's a GREAT idea! I'll do that for Momo, he's the one I worry about w/any chew...I take it away when it gets to about 3". I happen to have a couple of those Kongs here, had them since they were puppies loll they last 4ever! I use those smaller 2-3" pcs, I soak it in warm water, make it soft & cut them into tiny pcs & give it to them as treats.:D |

I tried 2 types of Whimzees for my dogs , The Stix & The Toothbrush.. I do not like them.. They are very hard and when chewed , small sharp pieces break off.. It makes me so nervous.. I will NOT buy these again.. |
The Beams are AWESOME - all natural and safe. I get the 12" inch ones and cut them in 1/2 for Wylie and in 1/3rds for Marcel and Pfeiffer. They smell a bit fishy, of course, but they're worth it! I get mine on Amazon, or direct from Honest Kitchen. Also, have you tried CET chews yet? They are great for teeth as the contain dental chemicals. Size UP on these chews as the petite ones aren't safe bc of choking (the petites have a different texture/style than the other sizes; I now get the Mediums). Could also try RMBs (raw meaty bones) like Bison Back/Ribs from Whole Foods. |
UPDATE.... So...tried the whimzees gators~bought a 2 pack of the brown and green and the boys fought over the brown one and wouldn't touch the green. It reminded me a lot of the greenies in it's texture. I think those could easily break of in chunks. So..it's a NO GO on the whimzees!! Now, on to the Himalayan Chews!! Today, I bought the smallest ones that come in a 4 pack and I also bought the Yaky puffs. Thus far, the boys won't touch the chews. They are too big and bulky for them. I also am not super fond of the sharp edges. The Yaky puffs are a different story. They look like pork rinds. If they are thin enough, you can snap them in pieces. Thus far, Princeton will eat them if they are in small enough peices, but he's not chewing on them. Ricky prefers me not to break them up and he's treating it like a chew toy. I am going to have to watch him with them. I think they could choke him if I let them get small enough where he will try to swallow it whole... As long as they are big, i think he will just suck on it and chip off the edges. This definitely isn't a dentastix replacement for my older dog though...so we are still on the hunt!! I am fairly certain that we've tried the CET chews at my moms and it was a no go. I guess I will be ordering the Beams next!! LOL!! |
PS~ I forgot to mention, that I did actually find something new for my little 4 lb guy!! They are made by Authority (Petsmarts Brand) and they are the Dental Puppy treats. They are long, thin round sticks that look like a straw and they call them puppy teething sticks. I have had a really hard time finding chews for my 4 lb dog. There are lots of treats that say they only for dogs 5lbs and up AND a lot of chew treats are just way to big for my little dogs mouth. These teething sticks don't have a weight limit on it, plus, since they are as small around as a straw, so they fit perfectly in my little guys mouth!! |

If they really don't like the chews but like the puffs you can turn the chews into puffs with the microwave. |
On Amazon it says ....for dogs 11 pounds and up...is it safe for a 3 1/2 Yorkie? I have been looking also for better safer chews! Thats on the Whimzees. |
I am a fan of bully sticks with no raw hide. Elk bones that have the marrow showing Bones that are stuffed with stuff. Carrots are good as well. |

So....I just bought the blue buffalo bones. IMO, they are a bit pricey at $18.00 a bag, but I got them at the Black Friday sale today for 1/2 off. Boy, do they stink!! IMO, they smell like molasses Thus far...nobody seems to be interested in the Blue Bones. Princeton, who's usually protective of the treats he likes, abandoned his bone and Ricky is sleeping on his. I also bought Zukes mini naturals in Salmon flavor and Prairie beef jerky dog treats. The boys weren't digging the Zukes, but they did give the Prairie Beef jerky 2 paws up!! So far....we still haven't found a good dentastick replacement. We will keep trying though... On a high note....the Prarie Beef jerky treats have glucosamine and chondroitin in it, which will be great for my older pup. I had already tried chewable glucosamine tabs and chewy bones with glucosamine in them and he didn't want to eat them. So, this is the first I've found that he will actually eat. |
has anyone tried the zukes z bones dental bones they come in crisp apple/carrot and other flavors? Looking for dentastix replacement for morgan also? |
