Question on spaying Do vets normally give rabies shot same time they are spayed? Do you think that is too much for the little thing? Zoey is 5 months and weighs 2 oz shy of 3 lbs.... Any tips on how to prepare besides being with her 24/7 ? :) |
Yes, many do. Yes, your concern is warranted. I'd do it a couple weeks before or after. Well, you could get some onesies if you want to avoid an e-collar. Just be ready for camping on the floor with snuggly blankets.:) |

I have always used baby onesies on my girls who were spayed. |

I would wait to get the Rabies vaccine until she is 6 months. You could wait to have her spayed until she is a little older, too. I waited until Teeka was 8 months to get her spayed and Tatiana will be 10 months this week and she is not spayed yet. It is up to you and your vet. |
Thanks for the input, also.... When do they go in heat? I want her done before that....hmmm Would love to wait till after the holidays but not at her expense. She sleeps with me anyhow, I am such a light sleeper, she will be definetely feel comforted:) How many onesies do i get? I already got one to see how they fit her...silly me it had legs but it was a preemie and didn't have much selection....I will have to send a picture , it's so funny ....a monkey one ...I will look for leg less now I know a preemie fits her with a bit of a droopy drawer though, lol |

I would never do a vaccine and a surgery at the same time its to much on her body. You do need to make sure to have any extra baby teeth pulled when she gets spayed though and if you want her micro chipped you could do that at the same time. |
I read they can go into heat at 6 months so I won't take any chances . Vet said she could moniter her there if she had her rabies vaccine too.... Now I'm Leary. I didn't really want to but I'm no dr. Are rabies a more difficult vaccine than the others? Her teeth look good, and I had thought about microchip but we live in a rural area , plus i don't let her out of my sight.i don't think I will. I'm do nervous, my poor baby. |
Tessie was 3lbs when I had her spayed. I adopted her when she was 2 1/2 years old and she wasn't spayed. I knew that I wanted to have her spayed, but worried about the effects with her size. I definitely wouldn't want to do anything else- especially vaccinations along with the spay at the same time. My vet originally planned to do a dental cleaning while she was under the anesthesia for the spay, but when I picked her up he told me that he did not do the dental cleaning because he felt that would be too much for her. I was glad that he didn't do it. When I brought Tessie home I also had a baby onesie for her. I scheduled her spay so I could be off work the following day and she stayed curled up by my side the entire day. I was so worried, but she recovered very quickly. By the 3rd day she was almost back to normal. |
Awwww Thank you |

No, I wouldn't do any vaccines with a spay. Even if they were staying at the vet, which no I wouldn't let my baby stay at the vet after a spay. I'd want her home with me so I can take care of her. IMO :) Have some good, soft food ready for her after her spay, especially if she has any teeth pulled. For whatever reason I couldn't get Billi to eat soft dog food, but was able to get her to take a couple spoons full of chicken noodle soup (mainly just broth and chicken) to keep her strength up since she wasn't really supposed to eat much the first night anyway. Be prepared for lots of crying/whining, which will make you feel terrible :(, but she's ok, just snuggle and talk to her. Personally, if she's not a jumper, I'd keep her on your bed- just make sure you're lifting her up & down. Give her lots of comfy, warm blankets and lay on the kisses and rubs. Your baby will be ok! You'll be ok, too! LOL :) |
Awwwwww Thank you, thank you thank you, About the teeth, I will call the vet right now and cancel the vaccine for now , and mention the teeth. She said her teeth looked good at last vaccine session......but I will make known I am concerned about the baby teeth. I think vet wanted to keep her to watch her for any reactions but that should be seen coming out of anesthesia shouldn't it? Plus vet intended to give vaccine also.... I'm wondering about the vet now:( wanting to do both.... She seems real gentle and compassionate and I\'ve heard good things about her but haven\'t had her before.... Ohhhhh |
I won\'t be worried too much about the vaccine, she can have that done any time. I wouldn\'t mix that with the surgery tho. Usually the spay is done in the morning and the pup can go home in the afternoon/evening. Billi went in at 8 & I was allowed to get her at 3 because she was doing well. Some vets say a little later to be sure. Overnight doesn\'t seem totally necessary, but some Dr\'s do. It\'s preference I think. I just know I wouldn\'t have slept well if Billi stayed overnight. I\'d have worried non-stop. I\'d ask your vet to elaborate about the reasoning for doing the vaccine the same day & what she means by her teeth looking good. That could mean a few things. Ask her pointedly if it looks like your little one is retaining any baby teeth & then tell her how you feel about the shot. |
