Playing Right after Meal times?? Is it dangerous??

I know that bigger dogs(newfoundlands, mastiffs, great danes etc) are not supposed to do any kind of activity for at least 1/2 hour after they eat...but what about these little guys??? Do we have to worry about bloat or any other issues from them being active after a meal.

Ricky is jet propelled after he eats...short of holding him or caging him, he runs around playing for 10-15 minutes and then clonks out for a nap...and I worry because he's doing rip tearing around the house on a full belly.

Callie only eats when she is playing lol so I hope not.

The large- and giant-breed dogs, especially those with deep chests, are at greatest risk of bloat, but dogs of any size can get it.. However I've never heard of a small breed getting it.

I like your description of Ricky, jet propelled. Max has been that way since we was a pup. Loves to play hard after he eats. We haven't had any problems.

The only problem that I have had with Morgan is that occasionally if he plays after he eats he will throw up

Been there, done that!

My Biewer has a very deep chest and I do have to watch her for bloating. Any dog, big or small, with a deep chest has a higher risk of bloating.

It might be better to take him for a slow, relaxed type of walk after meals, than to allow him to get so hyper. Or feed smaller meals, more often...

If anything, they'll throw up, my guys have done that b4. They do swallow air when eating & it will develop air pockets in their tummy. Momo had an x-ray done & we saw the air pocket in his tummy, making him look bloated. He devours his food. Vet said it was nothing to worry about but I do wait half an hr after they eat to take them out for their walk.

I wait half an hour too for walks. Max threw up once when we walked too soon, but I think it was more because of the heat. I wait mainly because Teddy needs to rest his full belly. He swallows a lot of air like Momo. Makes for great burps. Good thing he is cute.

I love the look on Finny's face after she burps. Like 'Where'd that come from?' or 'Geez, Mom, I almost threw up!'

I heard a thing on the news about small dogs vomiting and burping. If they tend to puke after a meal, it may prevent it by holding them upright (on their hind legs) as that position will allow the air to escape without bringing the food up with it. They said this can be problematic in little dogs... just not enough room in there.

I do this with Finny, and now, after she eats she runs over to me and asks to be held, so I hold her upright against my chest until she burps. I rub her back and pet her just like burping a human infant... beats having her vomit!

FYI: She's a little over 12 inches long, but she's 22 inches around, just behind her elbows! Very deep chested.

A video compilation would be hilarious! We are naughty and cheer for Teddy when he does it, so we have probably encouraged it. Max always gives him a look as if to say, "You are so uncouth."
