Is ICE/ COLD water bad for them?
 
It's been very hot & humid here, so I put their Gerber water in the fridge. I only give them the cold water out of the fridge when we go out for their evening walk. Mimi threw up some water after we got home from our walk. I felt her tummy & it was swollen/ bloated feeling.

I googled & read a few different takes on giving dogs ice & cold water.
This one says it's dangerous, it causes bloat in dogs. Foothills Dog: Dogs and ice/ice water: Dog owners be warned!!!

My vet says it's ok give them ice after their dental cleaning & I should only give them a little water @ a time bc if they drink too much too fast, their throat will get irritated. So what's myth & what's real?:confused:

Good question. I have been wondering about this too because we bring icy water to the park with us. In humans, I've read it makes our bodies work harder/burn more fuel to drink ice cold water. So I've been wondering if it is better to give the doggies water that is closer to room temperature.

Crunching ice itself can potentially can fracture teeth.

Isn't bloat common with bigger breeds?

I know my Mom always gives her kitty's ice water, has been ever since she has had cats- nothing has ever came of it.

Sometimes I will throw an ice in Peanut's water.. doesn't seem to bother him. However like your babies, Jenny- Peanut will reverse sneeze if it is too cold and he drinks too fast.

:thumbup: I like that part, burning more calories by drinking cold refreshing water.:D:p I would think it works about the same for dogs too. But the possible stomach spasms & bloat scares me...Mimi did throw up some water & have a distened tummy so I will be giving them only room temp water from now on. Who knows, maybe it wasn't the cold water that did it to her but better to be safe than sorry. I tried giving them ice before but they were not interested until I cracked them into smaller pieces & gave it them, I almost cracked my teeth!
I wonder if dogs get brain freeze too? loll

That's what I thought, but Mimi's tummy was swollen like a balloon. It might have been something entirely different causing that bc she didn't have much of an appetite the last few days. She's back to normal now & is eating good again. I guess all dogs are different applies here too.

I agree with Deanna that bloat is more often associated with larger breeds, but I wouldn't doubt that it is a concern with all. Articles I have read indicated not to let dogs guzzle water quickly after strenuous activity. That might be related to bloat, or even hypernatremia (water intoxication as discussed in another thread). Strenuous activity affects electrolyte balance, so that would make sense to me.

I've always given my dogs semi-frozen bottled water, and I never had a problem with it. It's the way I drink my own water. Ashley wouldn't drink it unless it was frozen, and she'd let me know if she wanted new water. Katie prefers it really cold, but she will drink it not so cold if necessary. In over twenty years, I've never had a problem.

I wonder if Mimi got sick because she drank the water really quickly after getting a little dehydrated in the summer heat. They are so low to the ground, and they feel the heat much more than we do with the heat reflecting back on them.

Tibbe loves ice and always drinks very cool water if he has a chance. If I put an ice cube in his water bowl, he comes running to get a cool lap. So far we've had no troubles with him drinking cool water.

I do know that some dogs that live where it is cool to very cold do drink very icy water regularly and I haven't read of any problems from this.

Thank you for all your insights! I think I know why she got bloated now...we ride in the car to a near by neighborhood that is walk friendly & as soon as she comes back to the car after our 30 min walk, I offer her water & she drinks right away. Maybe I should wait until they cool down 1st & let them drink.

Small dogs can get bloat too we had a yorkie on here die of bloat yrs ago

I always give my dog ice and sometimes ice water. They never have a problem. love crushed ice.

Overeating can cause bloat so Im sure drinking too much water can cause bloat so maybe since the water is real cold and appealing they could drink too much of it and cause bloat

Agree. A hot or thirsty dog will overdrink and I have to limit Tibbe on how much he can have at a time or he'll blow up with water! When he's at the vet, he rarely drinks much water and as soon as he gets home he tries to drink a lot and would keep on drinking if I didn't make him stop and assimilate it for a while before I let him have more.

Our bella has always gotten bottled water from the fridg..3 years now no problem...

Don't completely deprive them of water until they cool down, but don't let them drink too much. One of your water bottles with the licking thingies would be a good way to keep them from guzzling.
