It's funny you mention the water bottle converters, I used to use that for them in the car when it was cooler since they don't need to drink too much. I switched to a handi water bowl type so they can lap up the water when it's hot. |
Huey has 2 bowls-one room temp next to his food with a few drops of acv to keep tearing down. 2 nd bowl gets filled with just crushed ice at least every morning, try for 2x day. He loves his crushed ice but drinks his water from both bowls (kept in different rooms) equally once ice is melted. |
Years ago we adopted a Shepherd/Malamute from the Humane Society. The first few months with him were really challenging but eventually we realized that he could not drink any water without vomiting. For the rest of his life his fluid intake was in the form of ice. I so loved that dog! |

When we are out and about and Peanut is thirsty, I will pour water in my water bottle cap and Pnut will lap water out of it LOL it is pretty cute to watch! |
Bumping this thread from last year. Had just read an account of a Corgi that had a terrible reaction after drinking ice water. So many of us are new to Yorkietalk I wanted to get this back out there. |
Is ICE/ COLD water bad for them? I was going to post this very same question. It was on my FB acct. snopes states it is a myth. For years I have been giving my yorkies cold water that I keep in the frig. Not ice water, in the summer if it's very hot I will add one ice cube. All my dogs drank / drink at a normal pace. My dogs never had a problem with cold water kept in the frig. But I was curious what others members view were. Thanks for the BUMP. And good advise for all new comers.:thumbup::thumbup: |
So funny how this thread got bumped. Mimi & Turbo can't have cold water or frozen premade raw food...they throw up! I know not all dogs do this bc Momo & Princess eats ice all the time & eats frozen (thawed but still cold, right out of the fridge) premade raw food & they don't throw up. Weird! |
It's another myth making the FB rounds. My area was flooded with "shares" of it. Local vets negated the claims. Our local news even picked it up and interviewed vets on the evenings news. All said it was false and that ice water was fine. |

It's fine as long as you give them small amounts at a time instead of a large amount (or find a way to slow down their drinking/eating speed). And cool water would probably be better than icy in those cases, anyways, cause icy water will sit in their tummies more longer as the body tries to bring it to temp before it processes through the digestive tract (which burns calories but takes slightly longer to hydrate). Drinking/eating too fast can cause them to vomit or if they don't, this would be where the bloating thing would be a problem cause of the intake of air. I personally never had problems with any of our past dogs with ice/water, but I would be more careful if they are very hot/thirsty. |
It is really not the cold or ice water that does it. Bloat comes more when they are drinking the water really fast and they get a lot of air in their stomachs. It is better to give them a little at a time. |
