My second Yorkie had that, too. I got her when she was 9 months old and she wasn't spayed yet. When I took her to a vet check, I pointed it out to the vet (it was easier to feel than it was to see). He took a "look see" the next week when she was spayed and said it was nothing but the remnants of a navel. |

I would think that all mammals have belly buttons as that is where the umbilical cord was..,Huey has one, but his is flat- not innie or outie...:D |
I know it is a little old My boy has the same thing so I have researched it and talked to my vet. Conventional wisdom, however, does not differentiate between "true hernias" where there is a defect in the body wall, and "delayed closures", where a small bit of omentum slips out of the area before the umbilicus closes. The most common means of acquiring an umbilical hernia (delayed closure) is as a result of the umbilical cord being severed too close to the abdominal wall, when the mama dog bites off the umbilical cord too closely or is rough with the pup while whelping. Or that an area around the umbilical cord and belly simply did not grow fully closed and fuse together normally. Most don't need to be fixed the are just cosmetic, fatty tissue gets trapped outside when closing and leaves a bump (outie belly button) This type of hernia will not alter or hinder their lifestyle in any way. Keep in mind that a pup who acquires a hernia can still lead a healthy More info http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenl...umbilical.html |
I just googled it and yes, they have belly buttons but usually hard to see. |
I just checked Winston's belly button, it's just flat. I told him his mommy chewed his umbilical cord "just right". Then I said not me, your real mommy...he thought I was his real mommy...lol!!! |
Kaji has more of an umbilical mark tmrahther than a true belly button. It's like a small scar right above his Mr Peeper. And now, yes, even I am flipping my sleepy puppy over to take a look. :) |
Cute thread! Of course dogs have "belly buttons". They are nothing more than scars from where the umbilicus enters the abdominal cavity. A small ring of muscle surrounds the entry area and closes down after the cord is severed, resulting in the "innie" or "outie". An umbilical hernia is different from an "outie". In a hernia, the muscle doesn't close properly, allowing intestine to slide in and out. Most of the time it's fairly harmless. But in some cases, the intestine gets trapped and strangulates; resulting in a medical emergency. Umbilical hernias are considered genetic defects. |
