Omega 3 fatty acid I need a little help. Callie has allergies that get bad from spring until fall and her skin is what breaks out and she will get itchy. Well after her last breakout (she gets at least one bad one every year) the vet gave me some Omega 3 fatty acid supplement to put over her food well this didn't work because she won't eat it and I hand feed her most of the time so I bought one from Drsfosterandsmith.com that are chews well she likes them ok but they are VERY crumbly and its to big for her to eat whole so I have to cut it into four pieces because if I break it, it will completely crumble. So I went to petsmart to see if I could find something and I found a GNC skin supplement and bought it well its extremely chewy and Callie chewed it for a long time before she spit it back out at me because it was just to chewy for her to break up. So I am looking for some kind of chewy omeg 3 fatty acid supplement if anyone has any ideas or knows of any please tell me. I am hopping to avoid a break out this allergy season. |
I don't know, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. Uni gets bad seasonal allergies and all last season I had to give her otc allergy meds. Probably should start again. She really hated the oil version of the omega 3s. I tried the fish oil, plus it made her stink like fish. :( |
FIrst of all, if you are not using the correct dose of omega-3, you're wasting your time. If you still think you want to use it, this is the product I use Product Details |
No recommendations on chewy supps.I agree with the above. Dose is very important (most specifically the dha and EPA). some products are much purer than others too. |
I use Animal Essentials Fish Oil Plus (which I sell) for my boys. The company claims it is "richer in bioavailable DHA and EPA than most other fish oils." I have been happy with the results and the boys love the taste. My only complaint is that the capsules are not as easy to open as they once were. I have to use scissors to cut the little tail off of the fish shaped capsule. For this reason, I am going to try Nordic Naturals when we finish our caps. The Animal Essentials don't make the guys smell like fish oil. It is fortified with barley grass, which I smell on their beards close to bath day. |

I have two things that I do: Mix a little sardine in the food a couple times a week or Cut and drain a fish oil tablet into the food.(bought the tablets at Costco) No problems so far but i put gloves on so i don't get the oil on my skin, it stinks! ;) |
New vet gave Momo a bottle of omega 3 fatty acid liquid fish oil in a pump bottle. I have no idea if it has ethoxyquin in it, but it's made in Norway by Butler Schein (has anyone heard of it? I think it's a product designed to be sold by vets?). It has EPA, DHA, Vitamin A, D3 & E. He said it's great for their kidneys, excellent antioxident, helps support the immune system, joint health & great for healthy skin & coat. As for dosage, I give them half a teaspoon once a day, just sprinkle it over their moistened kibble for dinner. It smells fishy, so I give them a face wash when I wash their paws after their evening walks. |
Mine will pick out the sardine if it's not mushed/mixed well but doesn't mind the oil. True, breath smells like sardines but it's worth it ;) |

There's a specific dose of EPA/DHA that's required for therapeutic effect. Adding less than that will only add fat to the diet -- and why would anyone bother to use fish oil without it being therapeutic. It's the same for people. So for my Dog daisy who is 8 lbs takes one Nordic natural capsule every day. I pierce it with a knife and squeeze it on her food, tossing the plastic capsule. This is the only fat in Daisy's home cooked diet other than the small amounts found in her protein sources. If you use a different brand, you have to calculate the dose of EPA/DHA. Since I am not a nutritionist I don't feel comfortable telling people what they should add. However, if anyone would like to visit the "ask the nutritionist" section of PetDiets - VNC putting pets' health first!, you can search the word omega and there's a post where she advises someone of the dose. I do not know if her advice would apply to other dogs beyond the one she posted, so if anyone wants to know, they should ask her directly, especially those of you who are clients already. |
