Heartworms Kill Dogs!! 3 Attachment(s) Attachment 384389 In Loving Memory of Callie 2010-2013 Callie's death was 100 percent preventable! Her owner made a choice not to protect her from heartworms and the damage done to her lungs by the time she came to Yorkie Haven Rescue was permanent. Callie was only 3 years old when she died. After months of being treated with multiple medications, our precious girl went to Rainbow Bridge. PLEASE do not let this happen to your pup! Heartworm preventatives for our little pups are relatively inexpensive. Sadly, I see a lot of posts where people thnk they are giving their pups poison and they opt not to treat them. If they could see the meds Callie was on....never mind the fact they cost hundreds each month.....they might think again. If they could see a precious baby struggling to catch her breath ... they might think again. If they could see a precious girl die just because someone failed to prevent something so easily preventable...they might think again. If they had met Callie for just one day....they might think again. Callie was one of the sweetest pups I have ever met and I will never, ever forget her. I hope that by posting this, maybe Callie will be saving other pups from her fate. The threat is real!! Please please protect your beloved pups. RIP sweet Callie. We will see you again one day...until then you run with the angels sweet baby. Attachment 384390 Callie was affectionately nicknamed " Bug " by her foster parents. How sad... RIP Little Callie. |
that is sad. Was she 3 or 13? It said 2000-2013.. |
Thanks for posting this important reminder, there's no reason not to use heartworm medication, it's one of the safest medications we can give our pets, and it prevents a deadly disease that can be painful to treat and leave long lasting health affects as seen in Callie. Some rescues won't even treat for heart worm, they think it's too painful and will automatically put to sleep. I’ve read that YHR won’t adopt to people who won’t use heartworm meds, and I love that policy! RIP Callie, I hope people will learn from this. My memory isn’t so great, so we have the company send us a reminder and I also mark it on the calendar when the boys get their monthly pill, and now they have a monthly reminder app for your phone or ipad. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...eartgard&hl=en You can also use the email reminder. Maybe some good can come from her senseless death. This was one of the saddest, if not THE saddest cases I have ever dealt with. Just SO preventable. |
So sad. She was adorable. Sleep well, little one! |

So Sad RIP Sweet Callie Bug |
How very sad! I am so sorry. All of ours get their preventative EVERY month. I lost a baby to this terrible thing many, many years ago. Before much was known and the meds were not as effective. |
Poor baby. RIP Callie. This could have been prevented. :( |
Poor sweet Callie :( What a heartbreaking and horrific ordeal that sweet baby went through. I will never understand why someone wouldn't do the monthly preventative. RIP Callie |
very sad, she was very beautiful |
Oh how sad...RIP beloved Callie. Her poor foster parents must be so heartbroken. |
Truly heartbreaking. I am so sorry to hear this. RIP Callie. |
Thanks for posting. I hope it helps to show people heartworms are very real. |
Wow such a sad story! RIP sweet Callie |
She was such a little cutie pie! Im glad that you are sharing this, hopefully it will help other. I know first hand the pain of loosing a loving pet to Heartworm. Sadly we found out the hard way. We lost our Shadow in 2002. R.I.P Callie |
What a sad story. Poor little thing - it breaks my heart to read this. Rest in peace darling little Callie. |
Studies have been conducted and it is said if you allow a dog to go one season here in Houston without heart worm preventative, you can expect your pup to have been infected with heartworms. It is always gut wrenching to loose a pup, but when we loose one that is damaged through neglect or stupidity of an owner, it is inexcusable. I am so sorry Callie.... |
RIP Callie. This is so sad. |
RIP Callie I hope this shows people that they need prevention to protect their baby instead of letting this happen. Thank you for spreading awareness Linda. |

RIP Callie, how sad. |
Bumping this thread with the hope that Callie's misfortune may help another pup. People need to know what heartworms do to dogs....AND what the treatment does if the dog is not protected and contracts heartworms. |
I was going to bump too. Poor sweetheart :( |
Heartworm is an awful parasite! Having seen a dog sick with an early stage and treated for it, I would go a far way to make as certain as possible no dog of mine ever has to face it. I've had three Yorkies(two of them very small dogs) over the years on regular heartworm preventative and none of them, thankfully, ever had a bad reaction to the preventative NOR did they ever contract heartworm. I'm so sorry poor Callie was lost to it. R.I.P., Callie girl. |
