Food ideas Ok lots of yall know about food I don't like different brands. Callie generally does a lot better on a food that has a small breed version because the pieces are pretty small. Yes my 16 pounder has to have tiny food lol. Anyway I am looking for a small breed grain free food or a dog food that has very small pieces. She can't have lamb and is allergic to grains. We have tried both types of Fromm she just does not do well on it sadly and I just don't trust wellness any more even though she did well and liked the wellness core small breed. She is on Blue Buffalo Freedom small breed and its going ok but it takes her so long to get through a bag I would like to have two food she likes so I can rotate a little like buy one brand and when she finishes the bag go to the other brand and then switch back other wise she gets very uninterested. Just any ideas would be great. For awhile she liked Acana but it seemed the pieces where just to big for her. |
Taylor- Have you tried Halo? Or Zignature? I think they all have grain free versions. Both got 4 stars in dogfood review. I switched to Halo when my pups kept stealing pieces from a rescue I was overnighting. I couldn't keep them away from it. I was given a sample of Zignature from the pet store I shop at. Very tiny pieces and my pups went totally ape over it. You are so much expertised though then I as I've just started lurking on the food threads and taking all the info in I can get!! |
Have you tried CC, we just bought the Wilderness version and the bites are pretty small.. |
What about Now Fresh for small breeds? |
Jada is allergic to grain and chicken. I feed California Natural Sweet Potato and venison. It has very limited ingredients and she is thriving on it. I'm not sure the size would be small enough though. It is smaller than a dime but not tiny. |
Thanks everyone I will look into these brands |
Let us know what you decide on! I love seeing what others are feeding (for whatever strange reason)! |
Our kibble is very small but it has grains and if you're looking for grain free it wouldn't work for you. My boys love the food and have done very well on it in addition to their home cooked food. You could home cook, many of the balance it recipes are grain free. I also have one recipe I use for chicken and peas and also chicken and sweet potatoes from PetDiets - VNC putting pets' health first!. With all the recalls (and they are almost daily) I wouldn't touch most brands. |
Taylor, I use Science Diet Ideal Balance for my pups that are not on RX foods....I trust the company and that is why I use them. They have a grain free version. Not sure how small you want the kibble, but none of mine have issues with the size of it. They have a $12.99 rebate on the following link which also gives information about the food. We currently use Acana pacificia and our dogs love it. I felt because the kibble was flat they were smallish...Callie must just have a delicate mouth and need tiny bits lol. Acana has raised their pricces to crazy so Im thinking about Castor and Pollux Utramix or Barking at the moon but I have no idea if they are small kibbles so I am just littering up your thread....oops sorry! |
I have just changed Charlie to Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance dog food for small breeds. I'm doing the Limited ingredient one- no grains - allergy formula, etc.... It is very expensive ( I think) but the pet store told me it was the best....? It is a very small kibble. Charlie seems to be allergic as well as picky - I have tried almost everything and he either doesn't like it or he itches and his eyes water more than usual. I have raised 3 children, one has reflx terribly, the other is a vegetarian and my middle son is an easy eater .... But I have never ever had such trouble feeding a child or a pet - I'm crossing my fingers... We have only been on it a week.... So far I can't see a change... If anyone has a better idea please let me know. Thanks |

Taylor, Now Small Breed by Petcurean is a pretty small kibble. I have a sample of the Now Adult Grain-Free and it's not that big, so I'd assume the small breed is even smaller. Jackson's been eating Fromm since Sept-ish and doing well for the most part and he LOVES it, but his poop has still not been how I like it (haha, I know that's gross!) but with this NOW sample, it's been great for 4 days now (harder). |

The kibble in the Now Fresh small breed is pretty small. Small Breed Dog Food | Petcurean NOW No Grain Dog Food We just moved and I haven't been able to find the food I was feeding locally (and it figures that when I went to stock up before we moved, they store was out), so after checking out a couple stores here I found an awesome store and the lady that owns it gave me about 22 bags of samples. A lot of them were the Now Fresh small breed, so I am starting to transition to that to see how they do on it. |
I tried Vets Choice holistic Health extension little bites and the kibble is smaller than Fromm kibble. We are currently using fromm, since I can get it locally, but my pups did ok with Vets Choice. I emailed them and they sent a lot of samples. |
solid gold sundancer is pretty small |
Alrighty just went to chewy and ordered a 6 pound bag of Now small breed and then a 4 pound bag of Hill's Ideal Balance Natural Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Small Breed. Hope she likes one of these if she dosen't my moms dogs eat anything lol |
Mine eat anything but Pixie has a hard time with kibble. I just switched today to Taste of the Wild Salmon. This new pet food store had samples. I wanted a grain free that wasn't terribly high in protein as Cali has MVD and one where the kibble was smaller for Pixie. |

Another food you might look into is Amicus. It is a small breed grain free formula made by Horizon. Horizon is a small Canadian company that uses only locally sourced ingredients and makes their own food in their own facility. My dogs really like it (and also the Horizon Legacy). |
Hopefully you are able to find something that Callie likes. Thankfully for us it has never been a battle of what Peanut will eat- it has been a battle of what he can tolerate. There was one food he would not touch with a 10ft pole, I can’t remember the brand, but it was Venison… Peanut would not touch it!! The crazy thing is I started him on the Canine Caviar Venison and he loves it, I think he loves it more than the Open Sky… These dog’s I tell ya!! |
