Spaying on Friday, March 8th Camrey is schedule for surgery this week. Since I am sure most of you have been through this, thought I would reach out for any suggestions or tips you might have for post-surgical care. I am soooooo nervous for her! Thanks everyone! |
For girls, most people appreciate having a onesie for them to wear and an e-collar to prevent licking and scratching of the surgical area -- if a traditional incision is done. Discourage jumping, running and strenuous activity for 1 to 2 weeks. Many pups bounce back very quickly, but they have to be kept quiet for at least 24 - 48 hours. An xpen or babygates helps when you can't supervise closely. Don't bathe for 2 weeks. Best wishes to Camrey for a safe procedure and speedy recovery. |
Forgot a couple of important ones -- pain meds and an emergency contact number for a vet. Don't bring your girl home without pain meds. |
Thank You Kristen. I will definitely get pain meds & an emergency number and I believe they will send her home with a collar. What do you mean by 'onesie'? Like for a baby? LOL |

Hi! Welcome to YT. I have been through this twice now. :D. I have two girls and will try to give you some advice. Both of mine were fixed where I was able to be with them the next day. My vet didn't use stitches and did give pain meds. I think he used the glue??? I didn't use a onesie or collar for either girl. Instead I held them and babied them. :rolleyes: I know, they are spoiled. I was very lucky and had no problems at all. They recovered quickly and did very well. The biggest thing I did was make sure they had limited activity. When I wasn't holding them I had a crate handy. My vet gave me his cell number in case I had any problems. You might ask if there is an emergency number as well. I am sure your sweet girl will do great! Keep us posted! |
I didn't use a onesie because Khloe didn't lick herself. She was groggy the first day but after that she was fine. Discourage a lot of jumping. I am sure things will gone just fine. I will be wishing for the best. For some reason these little girls seem to be very hardy when it comes to spaying. Like I said Khloe was groggy the first day but was normal the next morning and pulling at her big sister's Kirby's ears again. I didn't have any problems with either girls but Khloe's incision took longer to seal up completely. Kirby is a bichon and of course larger so I don't know if it had to do with Khloe's tiny size. Watch for redness and ozzing of any kind. Contact the vet immediately. |
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Camrey. I never had to use a cone or onesie with my girls because they didn't use stitches but having a onesie on-hand is a great idea. It is worn backwards, so you don't even have to cut a hole for the tail. It goes outside the snaps. If it's not too late, a soft cone is so much easier on our babies than a hard one. It's great to have when cutting nails, if necessary. Small dogs have a tougher time with a spay than larger dogs, and I definitely recommend pain medication also. It may make your little girl more needy, but it will help her so much with the pain. It's best to do blood work before any anesthesia, particularly for little Yorkies. I never got used to my girls having anesthesia, but they always did fine, even yearly when they had dentals. Our last little angel had anesthesia at age sixteen, even with an enlarged heart, and she did well. Please let us know how Camrey does. We understand your worries and care. Thank you for all the tips, well wishes and encouragement! Camrey is very spoiled, too and I am sure I will cater to her even more after the surgery... I'll keep you posted on how she does. If anyone can think of anything else, I'd appreciate it. Love this group! Everyone is so knowledgeable & forth coming. Thanks, again!!! |
I agree with all that every one has said. Also make sure she has blood work done before the spay. |
It will be ok... I promiss! You have received great advice and just plan on staying with her a day or so and just cuddling and making her feel loved. I think I sat on the sofa for hours with Remy on my lab.. just letting her sleep and then she was up and more spunky each day! Good luck.. |
My little girl, Libby, was spayed today also. They did blood work and a chemistry beforehand to make sure it was fine to go through with the surgery. They told me that everything went well and sent her home with some pain meds that she can start on tomorrow. I'm sure i'm overreacting, but I am a mess this afternoon bc ever since I picked her up shes been completely out of it. Just laying in my lap, moaning if i move her at all, and a few minutes ago she started panting. Is this normal?? I am so worried about her. How did your sweet thing do today? |
Not sure on the panting but our boy was done last Friday and he spent the evening sleeping on my DH. He slept most of the morning the next day as well then around noon woke and was back to normal. I had 5 days worth of meds but only gave 3 days worth. He seemed fine after that and I don't like to medicate if it is not needed. |
