I'm really really frustrated feeling satisfied with the food I feed my dog. It's become an obsession and I have to stop agonizing over this. If it's not the quality of the food itself, it's the quality of the manufacturer. Please help me figure out what is the best for my dog. Here's what I found out with my intensive research:

1) Innova - I think this is very good. The food seems great and the company seems very good. And they don't really seem like they're lying

2) Merrick - I loved the fact that they made really great "dishes" for my dog, and it seems all well and good. However, I just found out that this company manufactures a low-grade food separately. I hate them now...they lie about caring about pets, because they make s%&t food, too! PLUS---I should have been more suspicious that they were selling food that would have cost me, a human, a lot more to eat, but was costing my dog a smaller amount

3) Old Mother Hubbard - I like Wellness and Archie loves Neura. Good stuff, but have you ever seen the ingredients to "Old Mother Hubbard" brand which uses beef by-products? I have. Again, upset at company for lying about how much they care about my pet and making crappy dog food on the side.

4) Diamond Pet food, which makes Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul...they use chicken meal by products in their Diamond Pet food brand products.

More than a competition with the regular dog food, it's become a competition with the "natural" dog food market. And you know what it is? I'm having a REALLY big trust problem with these dog food companies. I just don't trust them. I know what you're thinking...human food companies produce good things and bad things. But how do I know that the dog food companies are not mixing beef by products with what they say is real beef? Am I likely to taste each can of dog food? I'm vegetarian anyway...

I know, it sux huh? I am offering canidea to Mojo and i don;t recall seeing any by products in the list, and the price is right, i paid around $10 for 5 or 8 lbs...don't remember right now..lol...

I just can't decide. I am trying to before my baby comes in two weeks. I know the innova is good but it is not available except if I go to Augusta which is a pain for me. The chicken soup which is comprable is available. I just don't know what to do. She is on Sold Gold with the breeder but that is no where to be found in this area and I really don't want to order online.

On another recent thread where the ingredients were compared, I think Natural Balance was the preferred food. Is Natural Balance available in your area?

Hello: One thing to not about Natural Balance is that it's a all life stages food so the protein isn't at as high a content as it would be in a puppy food, and since our little ones are so small it's really important that they get lots of protein.

Believe me, I feel your pain on the dog food fronts, I too have been obsessed with finding the right food for my baby. I tried to get her on Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, she turned her nose up after trying a couple kibbles and will only eat her Royal Canin...the next one I'm going to try is Chicken Soup.

Since Yorkies tend to be so picky and Solid Gold is a really good food, I would keep her on that....you don't know the frustration of trying to get your puppy to eat something she doesn't want to.

Good for you for reseraching so much! You're going to be a great mom.

I feed my own dogs Sold Gold Just A Wee Bit. No corn, much lower fat, and made from top ingredients. YORKSHIRE TERRIER RESCUE has now become a distributor for Solid Gold. If you buy this kibble from them, you will be doing two good deeds – one for your own dog and one for Yorkies in need. I feed my babies innova right now, they are on innova puppy and have all the calories that a puppy need. i see the difference in their coat/skin/teeth etc from switching from mighty dog purina to innova puppy.

i have one questoin.. did you feed him/her solid gold for puppies?

My 5 month old is on Royal Canine for the last 3 weeks, she farts alot and her poop stinks, does your dog have this problem?

Carolina Girl....you may be able to get Innova mailed to you. Some distributors seem to do that. I found a site that one company did, but don't remember it. I found a trainer in my area that sells it. She told me it's good for a year if kept in a cool, dry location.

Yeah, I had a long talk with my significant other about the food obsession. He's had dogs before so he sort of knows about this stuff. He told me to stop obsessing and to just put the food in the bowl and walk away. The obsessing is bad for me. Archie will not starve himself. Also, if I get anxious around his food, he will pick up on that and refuse to eat. Just ignore him and the food and he will eat, and that he doesn't care about the food as much as I do. I have a choice every day whether I want to eat or not. Archie is a dog--he doesn't make these conscious choices. He will eat if he's hungry and he will eat what I feed him.

So, I put 1/3 cup of innova wet food (which is my chosen "good" food) in his bowl, 1/3 cup of royal canin kibbles in his dry food bowl, water in his water bowl and ignored the food and stopped checking to see whether Archie was eating or not. Guess what! He finished all his food today. I walked by and simply glanced over and it was all gone.

I think he's right. If I act anxious around Archie's food bowl, he will pick up on that and might get aggressive/defensive around his food. I used to feed Archie innova before, and I know he likes it. Plus, that's what my vet feeds her dog...

carolina girl---why don't you ask your vet what he/she prefers? That gave me a good heads up as to what's good for Archie.

If yoiu have not heard from me before the pro plan gave my sweat heart so much gas, nobody wants her near them. And stink oh my lord it was awful!
So we switched foood from the pro plan to natural choice. Sorry guys that pro plan might have been good for her but oh my it hurt our smellers big time. Now her tummy does not growel any more and no more gas. \

The protein content in Natural Balance is fine even for pups. Its balance, quality and calories they need not an over amount of protein and fats, which most puppy food has.
