And Lol, maybe that's why I remember it smelling heavyily, he only ever ate it with water and wet food on it. |
I don't think the Duck smells that bad- I thought it smelt better than Acana- for sure!! Pnut is almost done with his Open Sky, I think I will order another Open Sky- then maybe after that bag change it up! He is doing so good I don't want to start having issues !! |
Food is funny to me- like, I heard someone tell me they loved the smell of Fromm Game Bird and I hated it.. it's not even that it was strong, I just didn't care for it. Fromm Beef tho, I thought it smelled so good/fresh!! LoL ... everyone's crazy noses... not that I'm like, shoving kibble up my nose or anything... :p but when you first open the bag, there's always like that first smell. I hateed Acana Pacificia- ugh couldn't stand the fishy smell! |
After reading all the good reviews, I just placed my first order of their special needs formula and a case of turkey off from chewy.com. Tuck has such a sensitive stomach, I was a little nervous to go grain free/higher protien and fat. Right now all of my dogs are on SD and doing very well except for they have stinky breath and a dog odor that even a bath doesnt touch. :/ It was quite pricy 55 bucks for a 12 pound bag and a case of cans but If it works and my dogs like it, its worth it. |

Okay. It's not pricey to me. :) Riley eats little less than 1/4 cup twice a day. |
I buy the 4 pound bags- |

So for us, I am just not sure the price is worth it. Quote:
I was paying 19.99 + tax for a 2.5 pound bag of Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Puppy. I never even thought twice about Paying that much until I joined this Forum. LOL!! |

I was curious about these formulas- Canine Caviar Holistic Large Breed Puppy Lamb Dry Dog Food Canine Caviar Holistic Puppy Chicken Grain-Free Dry Dog Food They are not on the CC site, but are available on Chewy. |

Here's a page I found on the Dogaware site with information about the requirements of phosphorus and protein in dogs...it may be helpful on both sides of the coin: Phosphorus and Protein in Dog Foods If I'm understnding the information correctly, according to this page it looks like even the Buffalo formula is within range of what the maximum amount should be. |
Quote:
The buffalo formula is 1.5% MINIMUM. Meaning it could be a lot more. It also is 2.0% calcium. Wild Ocean is Calcium 2.4% min, Phosphorus 1.7% min. The other formulas are fine, the duck is low in ash. For example, fats on dog food labels are on a minimum basis. A food that reads 13% could actually go as high as 19%. If you check out a food like Innova, they provide the *full* nutrient analysis and give you minimums and maximums. A 1.5% or 1.6% *minimum* phosphorus content would make me extremely nervous in terms of kidney damage long-term. Fromm Adult Gold has an ash content of 5.62% on an as-is basis, with phosphorus at 1.03% as-is basis. Anything with a calcium/phos content of over 1.5% typically has very high ash as well. |
Is this food complete or do you need to supplement? Hi, this is Princess Sophie's mommy. I just placed an order for the Canine Caviar to be using a week after she comes home? I know you have to change any dog to a new food gradually. My question is, is this dog food complete? Do you need to supplement with anything when using this food?? |

It is highly advised not to switch food on a young Puppy, their digestive system is still developing & any additional stress is too much for them to handle. |
I have a problem w/Canine Caviar's 'Cancer Research Foundation'. They use carrageenan in their canned foods & it is scientifically proven to cause cancer in lab rats. I've posted this (about carrageenan in some canned dog foods) in several threads & nobody seemed to be interested or cared loll. Of course, I emailed them this concern & they never replied...along w/all my numerous other emails that NEVER went answered. |

I checked both Wylie Wagg and Whole Pet Central today and these are their prices for Canine Caviar: Open Sky: $17.99 Wild Ocean: $15.99 and Wilderness: $16.99 I paid $17.84, today, after taxes, for a bag of Wilderness. I wouldn't call that Over priced. |

Lovespandp - Deanna also called and got excellent service. I know she was very satisfied as well. |

Their grain inclusives were even cheaper... I also checked the prices for the Acana I used to feed and They were a few dollars more. Granted they are 5lb bags but Riley doesn't even eat as much of the Canine Caviar... I'm Assuming because the calories are higher ... So the bags have Lasted longer. It's been a win win for me.. Hoping he continues doing as well as he has and if so it doesn't matter the price. I will continue paying any amount. |
Dang!! Our store charged me $21.99 w/ tax for the 4lb Open Sky bag!! I got jipped... Even so, Chewy.com has the 12lb bag for $39.99. It's still pricey. I'm not trying to argue that the food isn't good ... I'm just saying IMO it's over priced for what it is. The Acana Singles line was pricey too, I thought. I paid $19.99 for the 5lb bags of that. Acana Wild Prairie, you can get 15lbs for $35.99. I always thought that was a good deal (the 5.5lb bags were $15 ish til they made bags smallr and raised prices uhgh). Same thing with Petcurean - Pet Valu near me started carrying their foods and the Go! Grain-free was $24 with tax for a 6lb bag. |
You sure did!! That's crazy!! :thumbdown Unfortunately it's the stores and online companies that Overprice it! Everybody trying to make a profit... I've been impressed with Wylie Wagg... They no longer carry it in their store but said they would order me whatever I needed. I get Their monthly newsletter which has a $3.00 coupon at the bottom... I have Always LOVED the people I have dealt with at Whole Pet Central. They even carry the 1lb bags of CC in all formulas. |
Hi, i too am going to jump on the Canine Caviar bandwagon ..:D Oscar has the itchys all the time.. No skin problems just itching.. I have RX shampoo, just use plain water in the spray bottle when grooming. He does not get a lot of treats.. He is on an L.I.D kibble.. Although he did very good on the CC when i first tried it about 6 months ago(1 pound sample bag) i did not buy it again after that first bag because it was impossible to find in the stores.. I found the 4 pound bag of Chicken grain free so i ordered it.. After he goes thru that and if it gets rid of his itchys I will order the bigger bag... We should have it Wednesday, wish us luck..:) |

Technically, I guess she's "correct" but, just for other posters to know, before feeding a food with that much phosphorus (only the Buffalo and Ocean formula!): Quote:
