Why do so many breeder start pups on this food?

I have a question.....after reading so many threads about the best dog foods to feed your yorkie. I am wondering why so many breeders start their puppies on Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan? If these foods are not healthy and have too many grains in them, why do they recommend it?

Because not everyone considers these foods as unsuitable. Look at the source of the critism and possible agendas. I feed Royal Canin from conception to grave, because I have researched foods and I personally believe strongly in EVIDENCED BASED formulations and scientifically based results for the health of my dogs. Some dogs can not tolerate grains, but that does NOT make grains toxic to dogs!!! And there is NO company with the quality management procedures that Royal Canin has...consequently, no recalls, which is important to me. None of my dogs has ever experienced all the itching, scratching, rashes, etc that so many people complain about. My dogs are very healthy, my litters are strong and healthy and well developed, with NO birth abnormalities, I like to credit the diet the dams are on during pregnancy......so that is why I use and re3commend Royal Canin. It CERTAINLY isnt because it is a cheap, poorly processed food. And the prescription diets they provide for the many diseased organs, like liver issues and kidney issues, weight control, sensitive skin and GI issues.....Royal Canin provides me and my babies with any diet they may ever need. My current discussion with Royal Canin at this time is I want them to provide their puppy formula milk to us here in the USA....It is only available outside the country.....I WANT IT HERE!!!! (and no, breeders do not get a kick back for promoting RC...we used to get coupons, but that was stopped because so many people tried to scam the system, AS USUAL!!)

I was just curious, as I had Teeka on RC right from the start. She was doing fine until she developed itching and yeasty ears. I then switched her to Blue Freedom grain free. I guess it is a preference and what is best for your particular yorkie! Thank you for the input!

I got ZoE very young & it was her vet that recommended RC mini baby dog at her ver first exam appt. She's been on RC ever since and has done great on it. We've had no issues at all.

I too use RC, I've studied nutrition, and it's more complicated than man websites make it out to be, you can't talk about individual ingredients, you have to talk about what the nutrients these ingredients contain. It’s chemistry and it’s complicated. Now “no grain” is now the buzz word, last year it was holistic and organic. Is it hype or is it the truth, it might be the truth, but there are NO studies to prove that these foods are better. New companies are going to try to convince you that their product is the best. I feel safer with the larger companies that actually do testing, and quality control is extreemly important to me. There's no doubt that some dogs are sensitive to grains, but this isn't the vast majority of dogs, some do very well on grains as long as they are cooked. (By the way, RC does make grain free formulas, if these is important to you.) Dogs have been human companions for 19,000 years and have adapted very well to eating similar to humans, as long as their nutritional requirements are being met. Just because an animal eats something in the wild or doesn’t eat something, it doesn't mean that that is inherently the BEST thing for it. Also, it impossible to duplicate the true “wild” diet. We’ve tried other highly recommended food, and got some pretty disastrous results including excessive tearing. Joey does great on RC, he has no gas problems, never has diarrhea or vomiting, no tummy upsets, or dingle bunnies, good breath and white teeth, beautiful coat, no scaly skin and is at a good weight. So, why would I change?

Thanks for your input! You are right, if it works for your dog....why change something!
