Got a Collapsing Trachea problem? News In the last few days, it has come to my attention that a medication for arthritis in dogs is very successful in treating collapsing trachea. It is called Adequan. It is an injection given by your Vet, once a week for 8 weeks then monthly for the rest of the dogs life. The drug is relatively cheap and does seem to work on a collapsing trachea. The mode is that it strenghthens cartilage which is what it does for arthritis but it will also do the same for a weak collapsing trachea. I know of dogs on this, the improvement was dramatic and quick. Ask your Vet if you have a dog with this problem or pass on the info if you know of someone strugging with this in their dog. Side effects are very minimal if any compared to the traditional treatment for collapsing trachea of hycodan and prednisone which often doesnt' work anyway. |
Wow! Very exciting news! Thanks for posting this! WooHoo! |
Thank you, thank you sooooo much. Kayla has CT so bad. Took her to the vet with colitis Wed. and she always goes into CT. Couldn't breathe and problems for at least 2hrs. after we get home. Anything that excites her and here we go. I am so glad to hear about this. Hope this will help my baby. |
Thanks for sharing this. Do you wait until the CT seems to be a big problem or do you start it even if its just mild right now? |
thank you for sharing this now that keylo has recovered from KC weve confrimed she as a milder case of CT than what we orginally thought but at somepoint she may need meds. thanks again. |

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this! I have had a few pups with CT...and presently my sweet George has it although he fortunately is pretty much asymptomatic except sometimes at night. He was found to have a profoundly collapsed trachea in Nov 2011 before surgery at Texas A&M. It came as a total shock to me and to his regular vet as he had never shown symptoms. I was scared to death during that procedure but he did ok. I am definitely going to speak with my vet about the Adequan for him. |

My Zada has severe CT and is on Flovent inhaler and Acepromazine tablets. She is more or less house bound and an hour before we expect company or we take her anywhere, she gets a quarter pill to calm her. I will ask the Vet. about Adequan. Thank you so much for posting this information. |
Wow that is interesting news. I am glad to hear that |
Thank you Lorraine for sharing this great news. |
Thanks for the info! I currently have my Shorty on Theophylline. It is working wonders but it is always great to hear of other alternatives |
Thank you very much for this information. Gus is 6 years old today! and has been suffering with a collapsing trachea for at least 3 years. He does take hycodon every day and a steroid/anti-inflammatory treatment as a rescue treatment. I am very encouraged to hear of some other possible treatment for him and I plan to talk with the specialist in Saskatoon, Sk and our local Vet in Manitoba. I would be so grateful to be able to improve his quality of life. |
