Priceless information! Thank you for sharing....there seem to be so many that have babies that are suffering from this. What a wonderful thing to have a medication that could actually help correct the issue, instead of just treating the symptoms! |
AMAZING Rx that helps collapsing trachea Hi y'all! My name is Lauren & my 10 year old mini yorkie Ginger is my best friend and love of my life! About 2 years ago, Ginger started coughing uncontrollably all day, every day. I finally took her to an internal medicine specialist in Austin, TX and she was prescribed a medication called "HYCODAN." -per the Rx bottle, it reads: "Hydrocod-Homatrop 5-1.5 MG Tab" This prescription is the BEST thing for my sweet Ginger! I give her 1 tablet every 8 hours and her cough is GONE! Of course dosage, etc will vary and I'm not a vet... but I can say that in my experience this prescription has saved Ginger! I know how much we all love our furry babies and so I hope that my post helps spread the word that there are ways out there to keep them happy and living a more fulfilled life! XOXO y'all! |

Collapsing Trachea I lost my Coco on Friday to CT. This was the second bad episode she had in 5 years. She had small attacks but alway got over them in a matter on hours, this one she didn't. From what I've read it is a very dangerous condition and it went undiagnosed in her because of the infrequency of her attacks. I have read that Adequan helps tremendously and I've also read it doesn't help much so if anyone has any experience with this drug or any that have helped, I have another little girl that is 9yo that has the cough and is on cough meds for it but I cannot see another of my kids die from this awful condition. I am heartbroken, this is the second dog that I've lost in the past 10 months and I will do everything in my power to prevent another dying from this devastating disease. |

I have a little girl that has it pretty bad and her breathing is getting worse. I lost one of my girls on the 10th of this month to CT and it was a horrible death and I will do anything to prevent it from happening again. We've tried everything but now its time for the Adequan. I've talked to my vet about it and he didn't know they where using it for that but she is a tri-pod and has bad arthritis anyway. She is currently on the reduced dose of prednisone which seemed to help when she was on the mega dose but now that we are tapering the rasping & gaging is coming back. So wish me luck and I'll let you know. Does anyone know what kind of cost is involved? I've heard it isn't supposed to be an expensive drug but you know how that goes. |

Hycodan for collapsing trachea My vet has got a prescription ready for me for Tussigon which I believe is the generic version of Hycodan. We are going to try that and hopefully it will help. If not then we go to the Adequan. Unfortunately he has never heard of Adequan being used for it but the studies that I have read make it a promising drug so hopefully this new drug works. Thank you for the info. |
I'm sorry you lost your baby to it too. My Coco had only a few attacks in her almost 10 years so I was completely unprepared. |
Cali has been on Hycodan for three days. Boy does it make her feel good. She has more energy than she's had in a very long time but it isn't doing much for her cough. So it's time to try something else. |
Tried this, thought it might help, but it didn't - stent having to be used |

Last Resort for Trachea Collapse This is the last resort! Hydrocod/HOM - is for coughing only - was told this again yesterday from the specialty vet. His fluoroscopy shows the collapse- on a scale of 1-4 - he is a 3 1/2 and said it is time to be done. We are out of options. He burden in breathing is lasting for hours now, Hydrocod hasn't worked, if I don't do this he will sufficate. Just hope that it hasn't spread yet to the bronchi because there isn't anything that can be done. Feel confident in the surgeon as she work with Vet in NY and he is doing trachea specialty work for many years. He just turned 3 and noticed his first honking at 6 months. So glad I bought Trupanion on these two dogs (also have his sister) He is 4lb 2oz. Never had a color on - maybe a buddy harness 3-4 times but no major walking on leash, not an outside dog at all or has ever been or ever will be. Very pampered as well as his sister. Pre operation scope done 8-7 - surgery on 8-8. |
could not correct previous post - he has never had a collar on. |

You are fortunate to have found a surgeon in whom you have confidence. Has she talked with you about recovery? What will that entail? Hearts and paws out to you.--KatysMom |
