Bordetella Shot... To Give... or Not To Give...
 

Because Riley goes to monthly meet-ups and we run into a lot of dogs here in the city so I have been having him get the Bordetella vaccination.

After Riley's last reaction I am going to be rethinking even that one.....

What are your thoughts on the Bordetella?
Do you have your furbabies get it, or not?
If so, why.... If not, why...?

I let Tibbe have one after he got over his GI troubles as my sister's dog, Tavi, nearly died of kennel cough, he had such a bad strain. He got down to skin and bones, coughing nearly nonstop, making this horrible noise when he did, & his many cough suppressant medications he was tried on as each one didn't work, weren't helping hardly at all. He was coughing himself violently to death almost, vomiting from coughing so much, couldn't eat - she had to forcefeed him liquified dogfood and liquids and at times he could barely breathe. He messed himself in his bed at times. She practically lived at the vet with him, got second opinions and the antibiotics and such could barely handle the strain he had. One time I saw him and inwardly said goodbye to him as he was so very thin and ill, I was pretty sure he would die within 24 hours. Thankfully, he didn't. He did start to get well, finally gain weight & is now a little brick but oh, he was so sick. Poor boy had this the first 3 weeks she had him, having gotten him from the Animal Shelter and he was cute, fit and healthy when she brought him home, bright-eyed and darling, playing and exploring the house/yard. But within 30 hours or so, he started to cough a little and he just went down, down, down from there. They did so many blood tests, cultures and such on him and changed his meds, had him on so many things, I think her kennel cough bills in 2008 were about $1200.00 for 3 weeks of treatment & he was on one medication quite a while afterward that added to that amount. Twice he was at the vet overnight for 2 nights each, getting monitored, fluids and oxygen, etc. Every vet diagnosed kennel cough of a particularly virulent strain likely contracted from another dog when he was out loose or in the shelter.

My son works as a dog trainer at a dog training ranch, resort and rescue and he said they have had a bout with kennel cough running through their dogs that are there for the month in their training program. Said 1/4 of them sick to one degree or the other but one or two very sick and some, not at all. They stopped taking new trainees, vacationers or any dogs until all clear. It seems when they opened the rescue portion of the business, the kennel cough walked in, too, though the rescue dogs, most of whom likely haven't had recent Bordetella vacc., stay over a mile from the others and aren't allowed anywhere near each other or use any of the same facilities, play yards or anything and they had sanitation measures for workers to supposedly prevent transferring disease. So much for that! So I'm pretty well decided about giving Tibbe the vaccination for it until & if he has a reaction, at that time I'll make a decision after that whether he should try for another with pre-medication or something or just forego it and take his chances without the shot.

Peanut gets his Bordetella Vax.. Mainly because Kennel Cough is highly spreadable. Peanut goes a lot of places so I want him protected...

I would say Yes to get it just bc Ry is always on the move.. Kennel Cough is airborne- Would you feel comfortable not getting it?

I get it because I like to take Callie places and even though kennel cough is treatable its miserable for them so I try to avoid it plus she gets groomed at the vets office and they require it. If it was a bad reaction though I would probably have to really think hard about it and also get my vet opinion. What kind of reaction did he have? Would giving Benadryl before help there be no reaction?

My two get it because I take them literally everywhere with me... Stores, dog park, vacations etc. I want them covered, but they haven't had any negative reactions to it.

He had a very severe raction to the [Distemper] = Da2-CPV shot he got Saturday morning.... even though he was fine with all his puppy shots and the shots at his check-up, last year....

Yeah.... he goes just about Everywhere with me so I will continue to have him have it. This was the first time he got the bordetella injection. Before when he got it, it was just the nasal stuff....!!

I had my schipperkee get bordetella every year for all of his 13-years, as well.

Was just wondering what everybody else does.

I am sorry. I try to stay out of the sick and injured area because sometimes it makes me very sad.

I am still confused about how a benadryl shot would keep him from getting a reaction to the vaccination? The emergency vet told me the benadryl shot lasts just as long as the oral it just works Faster. He didn't have a reaction until about 7 hours after his shot, which would be just about the time any Benadryl would be wearing off. My regular vet is supposed to call me, tomorrow... I am going to ask him that question.

But does his reacting to the ingredients of that vaccine predispose him to a reaction to the Bordetella? Have you asked your vet if he thinks it has increased his risk for Bordetella vacc. reaction and if there is pre-med or something to try to help him from having a severe reaction? And maybe ask if halving the Bordetella into 2 shots some days or weeks apart can lessen the chance of bad reaction without seriously compromising its effectiveness?

He had a bordetella shot beginning of August.
He had his Da2-CPV Satuday morning a month and a half later.

oops! I see where my post could be confusing.

He has always had bordetella....
I am not rethinking any vaccinations, cept rabies, due to his latest reaction to the Da2-CPV.

Bella has to have it because of our lifestyle...She actucally had her booster yesterday, well she slept most of the day and you could tell she felt terrible she did not eat or drink. So I gave her a little honey and feed her dropper fulls of water to keep her hydrated......Happy to report, she is back to her old self today....Happy Dance!

You posted an answer to one post by saying he'd just had a severe reaction to another vaccine - the Da2-CPV. I was just asking if the reaction to that Da2-CPV vaccine will predispose him to react badly to a Bordetella when it is time to give it. I didn't understand why you mentioned the Da2-CPV reaction unless you thought his severe reaction to it might also make him more likely in some way react badly to his next Bordetella and I was questioning that possible premise for future reference; and I was wondering if the vet could advise if he is more likely to react badly now to Bordetella, too, because he reacted badly to Da2-CPV. Sorry I wasn't very clear.

Gotcha!! :thumbup: :D I had very little sleep over the weekend being at the ER Vet and then worrying about Ry... that I think I was totally confusing myself!! LOL!!
My Vet is supposed to call me tomorrow and this will be another topic of discussion that I will add to my list!!

I should have added that he never had a reaction to his puppy shots or his distemper, rabies or bordetella, last year. The ER Vet said that they will just sometimes randomly have a reaction to a shot even though they have had it before.... That doesn't make me feel too comfortable!!

That is scary about just the random reaction. But it would be good to know if a reaction to one kind of vacc will predispose a little one to another bad reaction!!! It has never come up with my dogs B4 so I've never known. Please let us know what the vet says. Hope Riles is back to normal now & stays that way! :)

I didn't read the other thread (ran into this one 1st) but maybe he had too many shots @ once? It's hard to determine/ pin point which shot he had a reaction to...
Maybe if he got the bordatella separately (no other shots) & he had a benedryl shot beforehand, it would be ok? I would also stay @ the vet for 30 mins afterward. They can also use an anti- inflammatory shot instead of benedryl, but it's more expensive.

Please consider getting Riley titered before his next booster shot (should be every 3 years), as reactions to vaccines get worse, not better.

He got the Bordetella 1 1/2 months before the distemper.
He only had 1 shot Sat. The distemper...

I don't even bother with it anymore. Jackson got KC twice... once shortly after he had the vaccine and was supposedly "protected" and another time after he had had the vaccine, but it was "expired" apparently ... the place we got it at told me it only lasted 6 months? But still, he had it within the year and he still caught KC. Bordatella doesn't protect against all strains anyways.

But yeah Jackson goes to dog parks weekly, pet stores weekly, out and about pretty much everywhere, and hasn't had the vaccine in probably almost 2 years and has never gotten KC since. Not to mention when he did have it, it went away within a week of starting meds. It really wasn't hard to treat, especially if caught early.

It's really not that miserable... I mean, it's not comparable to them getting heartworm or something like that. It's equivalent to us having a cold. I'm PRETTY sure there is no such thing as a vaccine for humans to protect against a common cold... our bodies just fight it off, with a little help from some OTC medicine... but yeah it's not that miserable. I do understand why some get it... especially if a dog is at doggie daycare and places like that. To me, it's just not necessary anymore. He is not boarded, or go to daycare, and he gets groomed by a mobile groomer.

After posting on this thread less than a month ago that we haven't had any reactions... Khloe got her bordatella vaccine today.

The vet did it near her armpit and she was wearing her Buddy Belt and a sweater. She was fine during the injection and I was right with her petting her chin to distract her. When the vet set her back down, she cried (more like yelped... it was so scary) for almost 20 seconds. She was holding up her leg and I started stripping her sweater off of her to get her BB off. I figured maybe it was pinching the injection site? She continued to cry and the vet massaged her gently and moved her arm around. She was then put on the ground and she walked around cautiously, but was using her leg.

I was really freaked out. The vet said her leg could have been cold, so the vaccine could have hurt. I have never seen her react that way to a vaccine :( Poor girl. Afterwards, she seemed happy to just be in my arms and even laid down on the counter when we were checking out. This is definitely not like her.

We came home and a couple hours later, she vomited twice. If she pukes again, we are off to the emergency vet. I am watching her and cuddling with her in bed... She's tired, but otherwise seems okay.

I'm questioning if we will give bordatella again...

I think he said the injection lasts longer? I honestly don't remember...

She is doing better today. She is back to her crazy self... We cuddled last night in bed (she never cuddles) and she even wanted under the blankets.

The vet called today, but I missed it. I will be calling tomorrow to discuss her reaction.

Oh ok. Peanut is due for his... Everything but Rabies- I am tempted not to get them with all these reactions going around. I always drop him off when he gets his, they give him the benadryl shot before hand....

I would definitely not do them all at the same time... I called my vet the next day and he said that we would do a Bendadryl shot next time. I'm contemplating just doing the nasal next time to avoid it altogether.

Ya the nasal is much better in my mind.. I don’t know what to do, I am thinking of not even getting the shots. Seems like a lot of dogs who have never had reactions are having them.

Peanut had a reaction once, after that we have always done the benadryl, so I dunno!!
