Taste of the Wild Hi, I've been feeding my 3 1/2 year old Yorkie Taste of the Wild, High Praire Kibble. Wondering if others here feed it and if it is quality dog food? Thanks, Karel |
I believe it is Made by Diamond which had a ton is issues with some of their plants recently leading to recalls. I feed mine FROMM Chicken a la Veg with Honest Kitchen Force as a topper. Feed what works best for you and your dog though :) |
After Diamonds plant had a massive recall and I found out the made taste of the wild I decided I wouldn't touch it. |
Yes, Taste of the Wild is a Diamond brand. A lot of people stopped feeding it when they had that big recall. Some have started feeding it again though because they didn't find anything they liked better in that price range. A couple grain free foods the guy at the store I buy dog food from recommends that are in the same basic price range as TOTW are Horizon Pulsar and Hi-Tek Naturals. We are currently feeding the Pulsar kibble and supplementing it with a little frozen raw also. I rotate kibble frequently for variety though. I have also fed Fromm 4-Star Nutritionals (not the grain free formulas though) and had pretty good luck with it also. I tried one bag of the Hi-Tek but since I am not real sure about the quality of some ingredients I did not buy it again. They confirmed that some of the supplements in their food comes from Europe and Asia, but would not be specific. I hear that Horizon uses ingredients sourced in their region (made in Canada) and that they are a very good company. Their foods also have a very low glycemic index. |
I fed TOTW pacific stream for over two years. We landed up in the recall and had to do a quick switch. I have been feeding Earthborn Holistics, coastal catch. And have also tried Fromm grainfree, tunalini. I don't see much difference between the two so I guess we'll stick with the Earthborn, it is less than half the price! We all agree the three dogs seem to be losing the shine they had on the TOTW. |
The recall was specific to two newly purchased factories. The majority of TOTW even recalled wasn't affected but they recalled ALL foods made in the two contaminated factories. We still suppliment a lil TOTW roasted wetlabds foul here CA was never affected. |
I still use the TOTW for my two. I tried switching to something different but they would not have it. They would pick the new kibble out and spit it out till they got all of TOTW out of their dish. Seems to work for them, as my two are so dang pickie. |
Thanks for all the reply's. I had heard about the Diamond recall, but didn't know TOTW was part of that.I feed it to my 7 yr. old Maltese s**tzu and my 3 1/2 year old Yorkie. They seem to do well with it, however the size of the kibble seems large for the 4lb. Yorkie. I also tried the Blue Buffalo but they leave the Vitamins in there bowl or on the floor, so I went back to TOTW High Praire. |
You can always break up the the TOTW pieces for your yorkie. I know a few people do that for their toy dogs |
I was feeding my new puppy this too. I posted this week on this dog food brand because he really doesn't seem crazy about it. The breeder highly recommended it though. |
I switch between home cooking and TOTW. Although their food is manufactured at Diamond plants, TOTW is actually a small family owned business. My Lolliepop is doing fantastic on her diet - her coat is incredible so I think I'll stick with what I'm doing for now. Lollie also gets a daily supplement of Synergy and Smile (Mainly Dogs) |

Taste of the wild was purchased by diamond before priduct of it began. Someone came up with concept was making it and Diamond purchased it, it was alwaus manufactered by Diamond. They removed the inventors information from tge TOTW page years ago. TOTW is now also made in large priduction plants as Diamond expanded over the years at one time it was made independantly. |

Thank you ladies for the information. You are right and I am wrong as much as I hate it - I don't hate being wrong I hate it that TOTW IS a Diamond product.:D Not being one to take new information at face value I contacted TOTW both by email (waiting for a response) and by telephone. The phone rep told me that Taste of the Wild was the Diamond Dog Food grain free line. It is and always been a Diamond Dog Food product. When I told her that a field rep had told me that TOTW was owned by a small family business she affirmed that the information was correct. She told me that the Diamond Dog Food company was owned by a family in Missouri. I am somewhat pissed and confused. Lollie is doing fantastic on the food, but I have lost confidence in the prouct knowing that it is a "Diamond" food. I will copy and paste the email I receive back from the company when comes. |
The rep must have been calling the Diamond production company a small family operation...true thay's how they started...years ago...then they incorporated...expanded and grew into the massive Diamond brand they are today. It was misleading to call them a small family company...SCJohnson started as a small family company... |
Here's the email from the Service Rep: Cindy, Taste of The Wild is a subsidiary of Diamond Pet Foods. Diamond Pet Foods has always owned and manufactured the Taste of The Wild. Sincerely, Jourdan Customer Service |

I am so sick about the TOTW situation. I checked my current bag and it says it is that Taste of the Wild is a registered trademark of Schell & Kampeter and gives the 1-800 phone number. I looked up Schell & Kampeter on line and guess what - they are doing business as DIAMOND PET FOOD COMPANY. I am truly heartsick. I quit feeding Canidae when I learned that Diamond had bought that product. So I wrote Jourdan back - here's my latest email... Jourdan, Thank you for your quick response. After reading your reply I checked my current bag of TOTW food looking for a reference to Diamond. There was none. I looked up Schell & Kampeter and found out that it was dba as Diamond Pet Food Company. To me, an owner of beloved show animals it is very distressing- whether intended or not it leads me to believe that Schell & Kampeter doesn't want the Diamond name associated with it's Taste of the Wild product line. I belong to a Yorkie forum where we discuss dog foods extensively. I have always shouted praises of TOTW - and then there was the recall - and now I find out after over three years of feeding this product that it is a "Diamond Dog Food" product. I want the best dog food for my dogs. I thought I had found it. I quit feeding Canidae when I discovered the product had been purchased by Diamond and started feeding TOTW. I would like very much for this email to be forwarded to the President, CEO, Customer Service Manager, and all other top officials of Schell & Kampeter. I am not the only one who is concerned and disappointed "finding out" that TOTW is nothing more that yet another Diamond Dog Food product with safety recalls. Sincerely, Cindy W. Hice |

I remember several, several months ago when I was looking into a new dog food, TOTW really appealed to me. The ingredients looked excellent and as silly as it sounds, the themes of the different ecosystems with the different protein sources also appealed to me. The more research I did, the more I realized the importance of finding not just a good formula but a good, trustworthy company as well. It is so frustrating to be misled like that about about certain company associations when you're already doing so much research and looking out for your pets' health. I'm interested to see if they will reply to this email..... |
I have known that TOTW was a Diamond food for a very long time. The part I think is funny is that it is a Diamond brand but doesn't have the Diamond name on the bag at all. Not sure if they do the same thing with some of their other brands, such as Chicken Soup and Premium Edge. They do a real good job of making the food look top notch, but under all the fluff it's just another Diamond food that uses the same cheap ingredients that all their other foods use. When it comes to Diamond, buyer beware! They are motivated by profit, period. |

Like Canine Caviar is a brand of dog food manufactured at a facility called Hi-Tek. They do not put anything about Hi-Tek on their bags... |

I'm beginning to wonder if ANY of the commercial dog food companies are honest or dependable - or if they are now can they be trusted to maintain that status. |

A lot of foods are made at Diamond or use their facilities but aren't a diamond brand food. In other words, Natural Balance ships in their OWN ingredients to the plant (for example, the chicken that goes into Diamond products is NOT the same grade chicken that goes into Natural Balance). There is only a handful of companies that actually manufacture their own food and don't outsource to a different companies manufacturing plant. It helps them keep their food cost down. Precise, Fromm, and Lotus, for example, all have their own manufacturing plant. And Lotus even made it's own cannery because apparently they couldn't find anything that they liked standard wise... that's why Champion doesn't make canned foods. They don't have the abilities to do it, and do not want to outsource somewhere else. I do agree it's getting darn near impossible to find a trustworthy company but theyr'e out there. The ones listed above (Fromm, Precise, Lotus) are all, IMO, pretty great. A few others that come to mind... Midwestern Pet Foods (Earthborn, Pro Pac) have their own facility, Science Diet has it's own, Champion... *possibly* Nutrisource but don't quote me on that! But... there are still a fairly good number of companies that are trustworthy for dog food... even if they've had a recall or an ingredient issue in the past, I try to look at how they've dealt with it and what has happened since first and foremost. But I do think picking the company first is very important rather than just looking at a fancy ingredient list (which I used to do). |
