Breeder uses Eukanuba Puppy Small Breed
 

Do any of you use this food, Eukanuba Puppy Small Breed? Is it a good food? Or should I plan to transition my new 12 wo pup to something else, something better? Thanks!

After trying all brands I have settled on Blue which has a great reputation and no recalls...so far.

If its working for your pup then I would talk to your vet and a nutritionist to see what they REALLY recommend.

Home cooking is obviously the best food for your pup and many people here do it.

Prior to Yorkies my LARGE dogs ate Generic food, I know, I know...but for them it worked they ALL lived to ripe old ages (except for the one that was exposed to rat poison via a possum he caught)...anyways, I guess its up to you and what you want to do and what works best for your pup.

I definitely think Yorkies and probably small dogs in general are more sensitive to foods...digestively speaking, but I'm no pro! Realistically there are millions of dogs a year eating Eukanuba dog food. I know they have had recalls in the past but hopefully someone with better info will come along and answer....

Do we remember when we were little grls, and we got a new doll? The very first thing I did with my new doll was take her home, strip her clothes off AND BATHE HER!! I have talked with alot of women down thru the years, and they too, could not wait to bathe that doll or wash her hair! I have noticed the very first thing new owners want to do when they get that adorable, bewildered, confused, a little frightened baby home, where it is trying to adjust to new smells, new people, new noises, new sights, new surroundings, new routine, etc is THEY WANT TO IMMEDIATELY CHANGE THE FOOD THE BREEDER HAS THE BABY ON!!!! Why is this such a priority with new owners??? Why do you think, especially if you have a breeder that perhaps KNOWS what she is doing, why do you feel the food that she has weaned the baby on, has to go, and go NOW!!! IF YOUR PUPPY IS NOT HAVING UNTOWARD EFFECTS FROM THE FOOD IT IS ON, COMING TO YOU, FOR GOODNESS SAKE, LET THE BABY GET ADJUSTED TO ALL THE NEW STUFF AROUND HIM BEFORE YOU GO CHANGING THE ONLY THING HE HAS LEFT THAT EVEN HAS THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF FAMILIARITY FOR HIM!!!! I dont mean 10-15 minutes....I am talking maybe 8 months, maybe when you start changing him from a puppy blend to adult life stage kibble/food.....that is plenty of time to do earth shattering, jaw dropping, soul jerking changes in that baby's food!

I am not a big fan but I would wait a month or two before switching food.

Wow - I guess you have some passionate feelings here, Yorkiemom1. I absolutely agree that a new pup going to his forever home is going to be in for a lot of changes. Agreed. BUT. You make some assumptions here that aren't valid, at least for me. I never said (and never meant to imply) that I would change his food on day 1 -- I was just soliciting opinions about that particular food from the group.

Eukanuba isn't one of the highest rated foods - but it also isn't junk. So maybe, just maybe, it's that "in-between" food that the breeder decided was "good enough" for her new litters....the "sweet spot", if you will, for her, as far as quality for the price. I really don't know. But it's very possible.

Oh, and by the way, I was never one of "those girls" who stripped down their baby dolls. I would just love my new baby doll the way she was when she was given to me.

Thank you, lynzy420, for this suggestion. It gave me some good prior posts to look at about the Eukanuba food compared to others.

The breeder I bought Bentley from was feeding foster and smith. I did change him over, gradually because I have 2 others that ate a different food. I wanted them all on the same thing. My own personal feelings, I wouldn't feed Eukanuba because it has by products in it and they test it on animals. But, you have to feed him what you feel comfortable feeding him. If he likes this food and doing well on it (and you want to change to something better) wait a bit...do it gradually by adding a little bit of the new food to the eukanuba each day until he is completely switched over. I agree with the above poster...don't want to make too many changes too soon good luck with your new pup!

When some one says they test on animals with dog food what exactly do they mean? Like are the evil about it or do they just set a bowl of food down and see if the dog likes it?

Macy came from a breeder that feed Eukanuba also. I waited until she was ready to go from puppy food to adult food and made the switch then. She was probably around 11 to 12 months old.

Now thats what I'm talkin 'bout!!! I do not feed Eukanuba, but as long as the pup is tolerating it, or any other dog food, try to make the transition from birth home to your new home as easy and stress free as possible, for the baby!

I used Eukanuba for years with very good results...we now feed Fromm's and it is great

Sorry!! Yes, I do!! Seems like that is what everyone wants to do as soon as they get their baby home! Sorry if I came on too "passionate" , but my priority(passion) is for the pups and their well being. If you go back over the years and read the posts, and see the number of people that get their new puppy, and then within a month, they have started changing food around, the pups get confused, and then you have a puppy that wont eat ANYTHING....and then the baby gets diarrhea from the stress of it all! Everyone on here that has been around, has a passion for their favorite dog food/meal preparation...I dont even go there, because you need to do whatever is best for your pup and you....I just hate to see this added stressor of changing the pups food, on a new puppy that is trying to get used to everything he already has no control over....I am sorry if what I was trying to make a point about (switching food around, first rattle out of the box), was to blunt...I DID try to lighten it up with the "girls" and their doll baths...but you didnt do that either, so I missed the mark there too!!! Once again, sorry!

I watched a video on this...some of the dogs had really bad reactions to the food....seizures....it was HORRIBLE!!! the dogs were just laying there jerking around...I had to shut it off...couldn't watch it anymore.

We switched right away-I think ours had Jaeger on Eukanuba or Iams....Whatever it was, he wasnt doing well on it. His coat looks so much better on Fromm, and he's not super itchy anymore.

The poor mom to a new pup was only asking for advice and did not need, or I am sure, expect such a dressing down.
We talk a lot here about feeding our babies premium food and not giving the supermarket food. Posters are often chided for feeding the food mentioned above.
So when someone asks a perfectly innocent question please be considerate and don't take out your passions on her/him. This kind of post can really hurt a new poster and may make them fear asking for advice again.
I just feel bad when some of our members treat others this way.
I guess now I will be the bad guy!

It was about...let's see...5-7 yrs ago when Euk/Iams was busted BIG time for cruelty to animals in their feeding trials. It was bad, disgusting. They supposedly changed their policies, but this is something I will always view as very important no matter how much time is passed - bc the culture of a business rarely truly changes its colors, so if it could happen once - I think it could more easily happen again.

It's always surprised me how many breeders use Iams/Euk. Someone told me that it could be bc they're always at the dog shows as a vendor, and bc they give nice discounts to breeders at those shows. I dunno, that's just what I've heard.

I agree. I'm not a huge fan of Eukanuba, but I certainly wouldn't go changing food on a puppy as soon as you get it home, leave it's food alone for at least a few months, if not as long as it's on puppy food! Personally, if I didn't like how a breeder was feeding or caring for a puppy, I wouldn't buy from that breeder anyway!

They do give good discounts to breeders, and often times one of the prizes you win is this "dog food". It is a hoot to see all who don't feed that particular brand, going around trying to find a "taker" for the dog food.

Purina is big in the dog world as well.

My problem with the pups has always been; the adults get fed well it used to be raw (now it is home cooked), after a certain amount of time, usually by the time they are 3mths old, they turn their noses up to their kibble. Sigh... I want not to switch over until at least 6mths old. It's hard though when the big dogs, get the real meat, they know of course by smell that THEY are NOT eating what the big ones are, and it smells delish!. So I take to rolling the kibble around in the real meat. Then I eck out placing a tablespoon of real meat inside some kibble balls. I can usually get away with another month doing things this way.

The other problem I have as a breeder, is that I truly want the pups to stay on a good quality kibble, and no I don't feed Purina, Iams, or Eukanuba to pups), because most folks want to feed kibble. In one way it is more convenient, but given all those kibble recalls, jesh, I'm glad I home feed for the most part. My next litter I will have to once again investigate all the doggy brands, and try to pick one that seems to have the best quality and reputation.

Animal testing means they have set groups, one eats one food, the rest eat another - At the end they KILL or do inhumane tests on the animals to test how they grew, bone density, and many other things to determine if the food was good. I won't support that. Food trials are another thing, but animal testing IMO is not something I'd support, however, while I don't like Proctor and Gamble and avoid their products when I can, if I bought a puppy that was raised on Iams, Eukanuba, etc, I wouldn't go changing that for at least 3-4 months BARE MINIMUM, and that's IF nothing else changed with the puppy, even a minor cold. The food is the ONLY thing that is familiar to that puppy and it's sensitive digestive track. By all means, feel free to change to a better food, but just give it some time before ripping the one familiar thing away. I'm completely with Yorkie Momma on this, as a vet tech I saw so many very very sick puppies because people changed their food to fast when they brought them home!

Yeah I don't think I could ever use a food after knowing they where cruel to animals no matter how long ago it was that's just a big no no to me. Poor animals :(

Thanks for this explanation Ann......I often wondered about this....also Pedigree Dog food....they say in their advertisement that the "majority of winners from AKC dog shows are all fed Pedigree" (or something like that claim....AKC registered show dogs, or AKC breeders, or something...you get the idea!!!) I always wondered if this was true and why!!!

Hey Yorkiemom... just relax. I totally get what your saying and it is valid point- absolutely, but wow! Your presentation of it sucks. It was just a simple question posted to gain the knowledge of others. Clearly this new mom wants what's in the best interest of her new pup, otherwise she wouldn't have asked to begin with. No need to attack. People come on here to gain information, friendship, and comradery. While it's obvious you have the knowledge to offer, may want to keep those others in mind.

I also used Eukanuba, but that was many, many years ago w/ my sweet Charlie. He did well on that (puppy, then, small breed, I believe?) til about age 12, then, we eventually shifted him to something our vet recommended for his kidneys. Our two furbabies are on Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Puppy. The puppies are thriving on it, vet is happy w/ it, and thus, so are we :) Good luck!

It was not just the food issue it was your implication that "Max" was also doing other things that new pup moms do (bathe new dolls etc.......), when you had no evidence that she would do all or any of these bad things.
It would have been simple to just suggest that "Max" wait a little while to change food, until the pup was over the new home etc. There was no need for all the other stuff.
However I do understand that your words probably resulted from bad experience with some new inexperienced moms, and that it was a general admonition to those.

I think some people can be very passionate about their opinions and often will scare off new members with their posts. I try to avoid doing this, so here is my answer :)

I personally would not keep my puppy on Eukanuba. These few months are the most important months of your dog's life in regards to nutrition. They are growing and developing and need to get the best nutrition possible. I do not believe that Eukanuba is a good food at all and you couldn't pay me to feed it to my dogs.

My Couver was on Pedigree before we got him, but I went home with some of it and slowly switched him to Wellness. He did fine and he did not suffer a panic attack because I changed the only thing that was familar to him. He is a perfectly well-adjusted dog and has never complained to me about how I switched him from Pedigree too quickly.
