Heartworm Preventative Hi, i am new to yorkietalk so please forgive me if I have posted in the wrong place. I have an 8 mo old furbaby girl and I want to put her on an all in one preventative fr heartworms and fleas. I currently use one by mouth & one topical. My problem is she's just a lil over 4 lbs. Any suggestions?[/FONT] |

a good all in one is Revolution . you can buy a puppy dosage for 0 - 5 lbs. |
I would recommend Trifexis if she weighed 5 pounds. I think your best solution would be tell your vet you would like to use something that is for both instead of 2 different medications! Good luck! |
Revolution. |
I use interceptor...helps with hook, round and heartworms |
I don't really trust most of the topical or newer medicines for heartworm. Heartguard, Interceptor, or Iverhart are probably all I'd use. Some of those "all-in-one" have not protected against heartworms as much as they should. I've heard of a few dogs who got heartworm while on them. |
nothing is 100% so do what you think is best for your dog |
I use Revolution. 1 tube covers my 3 Yorkies and 1 Golden Retriever :) |

Excellent choice, I think. It also kills ear mites, which the others dont do, which is great if you go out in public places.....As with ANY of the topicals, just be sure and separate the hair so the solution goes onto the skin. I like to alternate the spot each month...no body has ever said this is necessary, and I have never read anything that said this was necessary....but I just like to alternate the specific spot I drop the med on...I just "draw" an imaginary line about 3-4 inches long, right along the spine, down the neck/shoulder area, between the shoulder blades, I start at the top of my line, which is a little further up the neck, then the next time, I go down about an inch down the spine, which is usually right between the shoulder blades, then I go an inch lower the next time....just something I do...... |

We switched a couple months ago as it is safee for epileptuc dogs but I took vet and breeder reccomendation In all fairness I didnt fully research it should I look into uts effectiveness more? |
Interceptor is what we use. I'd also use heartgard except in my epileptic dog. I wouldn't touch revolution. |

Revolution...as I'm looking at a 6 month bulk purchase for 4the dogs here...its definately not cheap, but that means little. |
I don't trust topical treatments for heart worms so I do interceptor for heart worms and then Advantix for fleas and ticks. |
I'd go with effectiveness and safety over an all in one. I use Interceptor, Sentinel, and Heartgard depending on pup with rare Frontline use. Tge closest to an all in one we use is sentinel. Revolution I'd consider for cats or as one of the lat resorts for dogs. I don't trust it. |
Hi guys. So Revolution does all in one including heartworm? Do you guys like it? I use Heartgard for heartworm and advantix for fleas right now, but an all in one sounds pretty good Does revolution work well on fleas/ticks or is it better to continue using a Heartworm and separate flea medication? Also one last thing, where do you purchase for the best deal? :animal36 |
1800 petmeds. |
Used Revolution for years, worked great....had one dog that had a localized irritation to it, but after many years and many dogs, that is the only adverse reaction.....My vet stresses you MUST part the hair/fur and get it directly onto the skin...she said too many people are in a rush, dont get the dose directly on the skin, and in some cases, dont even make sure they get it ALL dispensed out of the little vial. But that goes for ALL topicals...correct administering, and the effectiveness is good. NO heart worm preventative is 100%....just like vaccines, they can STILL become infected or sick with a particular disease regardless of being treated...it is just not as likely to happen. |
Am I missing something here? I thought Interceptor wasn't on the market right now. Max is due for a dose of heartworm preventative and his vet said they still can't get Interceptor. |

I just switched to Heartgard. I have two interceptor pills left and I'm tired of waiting around for interceptor to come back. I think it's going to be a while before we see interceptor around again. |
I use heartquard |
Out here in Ca we don't have to worry about heart worm right? it seems like only in parts where there is lots of humidity and mosquitoes like in the southeast, texas , etc?? |
We have a flea infestation here :(...using Revolution and Capstar...not sure if its working or not yet...haven't seen any live fleas since administering the Capstar...here's hoping... |
My vet still recommended it and I'm in Los Angeles |
Found this on another forum. I'm not saying he's right...just some of it could be true Yep. One of the biggest loads of crap ever sold by the big Pharma. Google it. Even in warm areas that the heartworms aren't killed by cooler temps, they are extremely rare and take 3 months to develop. I wouldn't feed my dogs unnecessary pesticides based on big corporation's profit requirements. Quarterly at most in high risk geography. Most of the country shouldn't be treating their dogs at all. A multi billion dollar bunch of crap sold to the American people. |
I use Iverheart for my Lab. For the yorkie Ive heard theyre picky so I got some heartguard. Joey seems to like that better than me forcing down a tablet. But for both I use comfortis for fleas. The lab loves to swim so topical wont work, and the yorkie goes and hangs with the stray cats so I want flea coverage from the inside out! |

Where did they get the stat that it takes 3 months to develop? Is that how long in the mosquito? I don't get it |

Sorry but I 100% believe this person is wrong and I think your crazy if your willing to risk it because the treatment for heartworm can kill your dog. |
