Unfortunately, I've been noticing frequent itching & really runny eyes...big, thick white eye boogers. One of his eyes is even a little puffy. At first, I thought it was from playing in the grass. But with all this talk about the Acana formula change, I'm thinking that these are food allergy symptoms. He's also a little gassy. Not anything major, but enough that I notice a difference. I don't have any experience with food allergies, so I'm wondering if anyone can confirm my suspicions. |

I personally would very Highly recommend CANINE CAVIAR. He is doing Exceptionally well on it. I am soooo Happy now and so is he!! He literally shrieks when I am getting the kibble out of the bag... and this a.m. he was sitting by his food bowl waiting for it!!  |
4 Attachment(s) One more thing..... I was Extremely Bummed that with the last bag of Acana, Wild Prairie..... Riley got very itchy and his Tummy broke out in small nasty dark dry patches... - I switched him to CANINE CAVIAR  , which he has been on for 7-days now and his Tummy has really started clearing up in that amount of time. [ NOTE: We have not changed anything else in our daily routine... we go on the same amount of walks outside as we have when we started the new bag of Acana... which actually haven't been for too long because it has been sooooo HOT here, in DC!! ] Attaching Before and After Photos. The first two are after the new bag of Acana and before the Canine Caviar. The second two are after taking him off of the Acana and switching him to the Canine Caviar... We are on our way to a clear/smooth tummy!! :D |
there is definetly somethind odd about the "new & improved" acana. |
I would love to see the ingredient lists of the old and new side by side. It should isolate what the issue is and let a lot of pet owners know what is bothering their babies. |

I haven't check the other ingredients, just the first ones listed for the protein content. The protein is LESS now than in the old formula. Louise :( |

It looks like they included more peas and red lentils and moved potato further down the list. I haven't used Acana, but just bought a bag of Horizon Legacy to try with my dogs. It looks really good and I'm excited for them to try it. They will be starting on that this weekend. I also feed them about an ounce of frozen raw each evening as a supplement to their kibble. They LOVE the frozen raw! Now every time I go to the freezer, they think I'm getting something for them. LOL |
1 Attachment(s) Riley is eating the Wild Ocean Grain FREE ALS Dinner... Attached is a photo of the kibble size on a Quarter, Dime and Nickel. Hope this helps!! :D Wild Ocean Grain Free ALS Dinner |

can someone Gove me a quick rundown of raw diet info? I have heard so much about it but really am confused as to why people give it as opposed to dry kibble. Do you cook it? Why do you only givr it some days? |
Company Reply on Facebook Here are the two replies from Champion Petfoods regarding Wild Prairie on FACEBOOK: Champion Petfoods We've had great reports from those feeding the new formula now. What we've done with Wild Prairie is add more fresh meat and fresh veggies and it seems to be an easy transition and as palatable as the previous formula. If you'd like to cont...act us by message or call our Customer Care team, we can give you more details based on each of your dogs' food preferences. We are available toll-free Monday to Friday MST at 1-877-939-0006 Champion Petfoods And here's a bit of a break down of the new formula: 30% FRESH MEAT - fresh cage-free chicken, free-run turkey and nest-laid eggs, bringing Wild Prairie’s FRESH, never-frozen meat content to a full 30%. 8% FRESH LOCAL FRUITS & VEGETABLES -... Wild Prairie now includes 8% FRESH Red Delicious apples and Bartlett pears from British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, and whole vegetables from local Prairie farms, all loaded with goodness and delivered FRESH EACH DAY. UNMATCHED INGREDIENTS - Four of Wild Prairie’s top five ingredients are from chicken or turkey to deliver a high biological value [BV] for amazing performance and palatability, Duck meal replaces salmon meal, and fresh turkey is now included. LOW GLYCEMIC - Locally-grown lentils serve as a low glycemic carbohydrate to deliver a biologically appropriate source of energy. Burbank potatoes are delivered FRESH, never powdered or dried, to substantially reduce the glycemic response. OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES • Chondroitin increased 3 times: occurs naturally in the cartilage and connective tissue in ACANA’s fresh fish • Glucosamine decreased: occurs naturally in ACANA’s fish ingredients • Protein Reduced 2%: fresh turkey added, fish meal removed • Fibre increased: low glycemic red lentils improve digestive health |
Also, Luma has those same spots as Riley!!!! Omg! I have been wondering wuat tue heck it was, sue uas tons of tiny spots that have scabbed over...they are all over her tummy and legs, and on her sides!!! She bites them when I'm jot looking, so they are all scabby and flaky. I've been worried its something bad like a skin mite or something. |

Maybe with the changing of their formula is the reason for my Yorkie to have had bloody stools. I had noticed it immediately his stool was darker, but after a week or so I had to help his poo out and it was a string of blood. I took him to the Vet and long story short, he's not on Acana anymore. I was in the midst of switching and now am on "Natural Balance". Acana is too rich of a food the lady at the dog supply store told me and suggested "Natural Balance"....which he loves. |
Well I haven't been on YT for awhile and it looks like it's a good thing I popped in today. I just got a bunch of big bags of Acana because my Jenna (Yorkie) and our ten month old corgi x love it. Now it looks like we'll be switching again! I was wondering if it was seasonal allergies causing Jenna's itching but Ebon has upset tummy too often when she eats this kibble. :( Why can't dog food companies leave well enough alone? I'd say this was a recession based choice but can this really be blamed on the economy of using more veg vs. meat? Orijen began bothering my dogs months ago and that's why we switched to Acana which seemed less irritating to them. It can't be recent drought and food shortage that caused this. Very disappointing. Probably better start cooking homemade for them in greater quantities than I already have to. :( |
I was looking into switching to Canine Caviar & I got worried about the ingredient list. If peas/pea protein is what Yoshi is reacting to, then I'm not confident he'll do much better on Canine Caviar. I really don't want to spend hundreds more on playing trial & error. Plus, it's hard to find a good kibble (even grain free) without peas! I just want him to eat :( I decided to order Darwin's. If he reacts to something in his raw, then I may be able to pinpoint what it is since the ingredient list is so short. All varieties do contain flax seed. Here's the ingredient list from their chicken formula: Ground Chicken Meat (including Bone), Chicken Gizzards, Chicken Hearts, Chicken Livers, Carrots, Squash, Yams, Zucchini, Celery, Romaine, Parsley, Apple Cider Vinegar. (Vegetables may vary based on seasonality.), Organic Kelp Meal, Organic Ground Flax Seed, Sea Salt, Inulin (Extract of Chicory), Zinc, Copper and Iron Amino Acid Chelates, Vitamin E. In the meantime, I'm giving him ZiwiPeak Lamb. I sprinkle a few coconut chips on top for dinner - a gift from Tokipoki :). I've also been offering him a few pieces of NV chicken raw bites because that's what I have on hand. I've got my fingers crossed that he does okay on the Darwin's! |
