Royal Canin vs Blue Buffalo
 

Hi all. Charlie is now 8mnths old. I've had him on Science Diet Puppy, but realize it's full of junk and fillers. These are the two brands I was looking into. Royal Canin Yorkie Puppy vs. any of the Blue Buffalo for Small Breeds Puppy.

The Royal Canin seems like it has a little more benefits towards yorkies with the shape of the kibble to clean teeth and ingredients for healthy coat...nutrients and antioxidants to help them since they live such love lives.

My previous yorkie lived 16yrs so I want to feed Charlie very well too. Royal Canin is a bit more pricey but not enough to worry about. Thanx!

I have always been a huge fan of the Blue Buffalo company. Sasha each Blue Buffalo Wilderness formulas and does fantastic on the food. We're currently in the process of also changing my parent's new puppy over to Blue Buffalo Small Breed Puppy. I do have to be honest though that Blue Buffalo is a very rich food and not all dogs can tolerate it. If you're going to switch, I usually recommend to transition over a period of a few weeks introducing the food slowly. With my parent's puppy, he came to us eating Iams Puppy from the breeder so I'm doing about a week at a time transitioning....75 old/25 new, 50/50, 25 old/75 new and then finally all Blue.

I know there's quite a few people on here who feed Royal Canin and their dogs do wonderful on the food. I've never been a fan though because I don't like some of the ingredients in the food, but I don't bash anyone for feeding it. You have to feed what's right for your dog.

I have used the Blue Buffalo for Small Breed for several months. Raley seemed to be getting tired of it so I took him off of it a couple of months ago. I plan on putting him back on it when we run out of food this month!

Toki's had a couple of the BB formulas and done well with them. Looking at the 2 ingredient lists, I like the BB a whole lot better. I recognize a lot more ingredients...nothing too funky going on. I'm kind of iffy on the corn and wheat products in RC but a lot of people feed it with success. In the end, you should just use whatever your yorkie does best on since each dog will react differently to different formulas.

I have had all my dogs for the last....1980-2012 on RC...I love this product...I especially approve of the meticulous quality control and quality management....their facilities are spotless....and no recalls. They had a recall on the prescription diet years ago, but it apparently had to do with possible machinery (heating, drying thing) issues rather than issues with bacteria or disease....RC has worked for me and all my dogs, beautiful coats, energy, ec.....no complaints at all. ........"In the end, you should just use whatever your yorkie does best on since each dog will react differently ......." We used RC on our dogs when they were puppies..... but when they got a bit older we switched to foods without corn.... Puppies have so much energy weight issues aren't usually an issue, but once they get older, corn can put on the weight. It also cause allergy issues, depending on the dog of course!

We used BB and the dogs loved it..... we now use Fromm which is grain-free and also having good luck with it.

I also love RC. Taycie is on a RX version but it has done nothing but wonders for her.

Joey’s on RC has done well on it, I did do a food switch to Blue Wilderness several years ago, and Joey had terrible eye tearing with it. I’m mean really bad, brown goopy eyes, so I switched back to RC and no more tearing! Each dog is different though, Joey loves it and does well on it, I think finding a food your dog loves is important, so you won't be tempted to spoil them with "snacks".

I like the ingredients in the Blue Buffalo Puppy and also Adult for Small Breeds. However, my Yorkie won't eat the brown bits. She leaves them all over the floor. I wrote to the company and was told the brown bits are the cold pressed vitamins. The beige bits are the regular food which is heated. If they did that to the vitamins they would loss potency.

Also, she takes a mouthful of her food from the kitchen and brings it to the living room where we often eat. Then she eats it. But she leaves behind the small brown bits.

Does anyone have a dog that does either of these things? I can't believe ours is unique!

I was able to get Joey to eat the brown bits, but I think they may have been the reason that he had brown goopy eyes. If your dog won't eat them, she isn't getting a complete and balanced diet, she needs those vitamins. There are other ways to get the vitamins to the food, I think RC sprays them on after cooking the kibble.

We love RC, Jada has been on it since we got her 5 years ago! However as you have heard each baby is different:cool:good luck:D

I read once somewhere that it did not matter if the dogs ate the bits or not. I recall reading an e-mail from a BB employee.

Either way, I'd honestly probably pick RC over BB and you wouldn't have read that from me a year ago, LOL.

I read about a lot of GI issues on BB, and they've had a few issues as well. But some dogs seem to do fantastic on it so I guess it all depends.

That's funny because I read the opposite. Just common sense tells me if the brown bits contain the vitamins and they aren't eating the brown bits, they aren't eating the vitamins. How did she explain it wouldn't matter? When we did the food switch, everyone was really happy with it, but I have read some negative things since.

Lol, yeah I don't know. It does seem kind of silly to include vitamins that way. Jackson wouldn't eat them either *shrugs* I am not sure, I just remember seeing it somewhere... I don't remember where I read it.

It was one out of only two foods that ever made Jackson gassy. He NEVER has gas or any gurgling, or anything of the sort, and the one time he ate BB for a few nights, omg the gas was horrendous.

Before I tried it, I read that so many people couldn't get their dogs to eat the "life source" bits, and I was so happy when Joey ate them, lol, and then the brown goop that look like it was from a horror movie. So maybe you're lucky if your dog doesn't eat it.

Yeah, sometimes ingredients that sound so nutritious to humans are actually very hard for a dog to digest, that's one of the reasons that I don't think I can tell much, just by reading the label, even though I've studied nutrition. My mind is always on what's good for humans.
