Nervous for Luma's SPAY!
 

Luma will be spayed in two days. I am confident in the vet we have, I've asked them all the questions listed in the sticky on anesthesia, she is getting blood work before she goes under, and I know this is totally routine for them...

But I am STILL so nervous I have been crying off and on all day!!! :( I know that sounds crazy, but I am such a worrier, so pessimistic, I try to prepare myself for the worst...I have been cuddling with her all day, we took a bath together (she loves this lol) And I groomed her in my lap, which is her favorite thing in the world. I know I'm being silly but I'm so scared :(

She's my first dog. I don't really know what to expect after I pick her up, can anyone give me any advice/share your spay stories? I just need to be familiar with what to expect. Willl she be in pain? When can I feed her? When can I bathe her?

awww, she will be fine!!! I was really worried for Sophia's spay/hernia repair, but it wasn't SO bad! Her surgery was a bit more invasive because she had a hernia repair too, but I'll share my experience! Sophia was SO excited to see us when we picked her up, but you could tell she was out of it/exhausted. You might be shocked when you see the incision, it scared me the first time! I took a picture on my phone (I still have it, haha!), and looked at it everyday and compared to her incision. It definitely was noticeably healing everyday, and now you can barely see a scar. We got home and she just slept almost all of the first day. She did have some water and food. They gave us pain medicine in a syringe to give her. I think 5 days worth? She was exhausted the 2nd day too. By day 3, it became a full time job to make sure she didn't run around like a crazy woman and tear her stitches. Sophia never tried to mess with her stitches, but we had the cone ready just in case (which was good, because Brody was a stinker for his neuter and needed it). You won't be able to bathe Luma for 2 weeks, but I used baby wipes (not on the incision) every day to keep her smelling fresh! Good luck Luma, let me know if you have any more questions!!

Luma will do just fine I'm sure. You may want to ask the vet what type of schedule she will be on for any pain meds, if necessary. Maggie was in a bit of pain the night of her spay and since she was spayed earlier in the day, it was okay to give her some again. Once she had her dose, she quieted right down.

She was still very quiet the next morning but didn't need any meds. By the next day she was pretty much okay.

When we took Winnie home she was still a little affected by the anastesia since they did her spay later on in the afternoon. She was a bit whiny and didnt really move much so i just cuddles with her all night. She also had some baby teeth removed so eating was tough, i soaked a bit of her food in some water until it got soft and gave it to her by hand, she ate right away. By the next day she was much better, still not moving a whole lot which was normal but she had stopped with the whining. After a few days she was back to normal. Good as new :))

I was stressed out alot too, and worried since we had a bad experience with a previous pet and a different vet, but this time was MUCH better!

ALL the animals I have ever had, and there are lots, have never had a problem with spaying/neutering. My vet does ALL this VERY early in the AM and you can't take them home till late afternoon. I think this is how it should be done all the time.

It seems like a lot of the "new" vets are more concerned over how much $$$ they can make instead of the good of the animal, IMHO.

She will be just fine.

Aww, thank you guys!! I was up late worrying, I know that's not the smartest thing to do before a surgery, but this morning I woke up and as soon as I opened my eyes I saw Luma sleeping between Tony and I, curled up to my neck, and it made me feel better. Her buddy belt should be coming today, so we'll take a nice walk at the park in it, and I will remaaaaiiin calm. I need a xanax :eek:

Do they always prescribe pain meds? Or only if they think she needs it/I request it? Should I ask for it? She has to have pain after a surgery like that...she is also getting chipped and pulling two double canines.

I know exactly how you feel I think we all do. Luma will be just fine and so will Mommy;)

My dogs have never had to be on pain meds and have done just fine. Each day they get better and better and you will end up having to work to keep them from doing too much (though my vet says let the DOG decide what to do or not do).

I will feel the same way you do in a couple months however, despite my talk (hard to walk the walk) when Zachary is neutered the end of July, early August.

I totally understand how you feel! I was the same way with both my girls. When I picked them up I held them the entire night! I mean the whole time!!! When Rosie went in they told me they would keep her over night. So DH planned a nice night out for me, dinner and a movie. Well they called and said she did great so I could come get her. Dinner and a movie got cancelled. Ha ha. Both of mine did great! They had no problems at all. :):) My vet gives an injection of pain meds. It made both of them very very sleepy the entire night. Within a few days, they were back to normal! I just bet Luma will do just fine!

i will keep luma in my thoughts and prayers for a safe procedure and fast recovery. every furr baby is different and be sure to trust your instinct. your a good mommy and know your luma. =*(())

Awww... it will be OK :) We had Logan neutered last week... poor little guy. They did his surgery early in the morning and we were told to pick him up after 5... I think we got there at 5:01! Haha! He was groggy and grumpy but he was extra snuggly all night long. We took the pain meds they suggesed (they were NOT very expensive) because his particular surgery was extra invasive (basically he had to be spayed AND neutered because one of his testicles never descended... yeah, I know... TMI!!! LOL) But we only gave him 2 doses and he bounced RIGHT back. By the next morning he was his usual self, getting into mischief with his brother and sisters.

Our vet told us we could feed Logan about 1/2 of what he was used to eating, but not until after we had him home for an hour. But he was NOT interested in food at ALL. He just wanted to curl up on his pillow and sleep! (The next morning, he ate like a GORILLA!!!!!)

We were also told not to bathe him until AFTER we take him back to get the sutures out, 10-14 days post procedure. I'm used to bathing him every 6-7 days, so... he's going to be a dirty boy!!!

Just be calm, because I bet Miss Luma is very tuned in to your emotions. Remember that your vet spays hundreds of animals a year. And... think how much happier your baby will be AFTER it's over! She won't have to go into heat and be miserable and uncomfortable every couple weeks.

How many days after surgery would y'all suggest I wait til she could handle travelling? We go to bf's hometown often. It's four hours away. She loves the car and sleeps the whole trip, but I don't want to push her too hard after surgery.

Mina's spay was done first thing in the am. I got her back about 4pm. She came home and wanted to play with the other dogs! UM NO! I put a baby onesie on her so she couldnt touch the insision,unsnap and roll up for potty then resnap. She had pain meds and I only gave them to her the next morning. It was medacam and it messed her tummy up. My vet said to discontinue because she was happy and seemed pain free. Her tummy was fine after two days. I did not take her anywhere until the insision was healed,didnt want to take a chance on infection.

I would talk to my vet about this. Honestly, in a few days mine were back to normal. Just had to limit the jumping and other activities. But your vet will know best so I would suggest discussing with them.

Sending prayers for Luma for a safe surgery and speedy recovery. She will do great, but I understand worrying. I have cried at the vet's office twice.

My bf said the same thing, I need to be strong for her, if mommy is calm she will be too. We really are attuned to each other. We are going to get a baby onesie for her becauseI KNOW she'll be the type to try to tear them out.

Do they always use regular stitches, or would they possibly use ones that'd dissolve/fall out? I don't want to ask them if it's a really stupid question lol.

Brody and Sophia both had stitches that just dissolve/fall out..... not a stupid question :thumbup:. It was weird because I vividly remember seeing them when they were first spayed/neutered... but I have no idea when they dissolved!! :p

Zoey did just fine with her spay. I dropped her off in the morning and then I played golf to keep my mind off of the surgery. She was out of it when I picked her up and they had her in a onesie. Since she sleeps with me and her bowls were loose I slept with her on the floor. I was exhausted by that. She whimpered on and off all night long. The next day she was up and around and by the second day she was acting like nothing had happened. I think the first night is the hardest.

It's tomorrow!! :eek: :confused: I'm so nervous! I tried very hard to stay busy today. We were excited to go on a walk in the park with her brand new BB, but it didn't come today! We did get a lovely package from Aymee.;.I'm putting together a box for my BFF's baby shower! Aymee made me the CUTEST little ocean-themed board book like the one she did for Sophia in the GE, and a card!

We'll drop her off around 7:30am and be able to pick her up in the afternoon. Wish us luck!! I know she'll be okay! Oh, and a tooth she was supposed to get pulled fell out today! WOO! Less money for me to pay lol. :rolleyes:

Good luck on her spay tomorrow! I'll be praying for a smooth surgery and a quick recovery. I'm still nervous on Ahi's spay. They rescheduled it to the 28th. :)

I am sure things will be fine for your little ones spay. I think it is harder on us then it is on them. Try not to be nervous or anxious,because she will pick up on it. My Suzi is getting spayed soon, and a dental cleaning with possible tooth extraction. The stitches disolve, and she will be monitered the entire time during the surgery. We have only one vet certified by AHHA in the entire county, and this is the one we use sine our dogs have been babies. they use the latest tech equipment , and I am having a complete blood test before hand. I just went today and discussed all my questions with the vet tech , and they do send home pain meds, and was not reccomended onsies, because they can still chew the stitches, so a cone will be needed. I have to bring her in early morning and pick her up in the evening. I trust our vet very much . It helps to know that Suzi is going to be in very good hands and well cared for before and during, and after her surgery.

We dropped her off a little bit ago :'( I was okay for the first thirty seconds and then I started sobbing and haven't stopped since. I'm not even worried about the surgery so much anymore, I just feel so wrong leaving her. I miss her so much it hurts. 4pm needs to come now. Meanwhile I'm left to do nothing but be a crying mess. Bf and I got back in bed and he fell asleep, but I can't. She should be sleeping right between us, curled up to her mama. I can't wait to hold her. :(

Thank you so much Kristin!! You're so sweet. She is out of surgery now and resting hopefully. I am dying to see her. It was so relieving to hear them say she did great. Bf is taking me out to eat at my favorite place ever! And I finally got out of my pjs...lol. so I feel better. Roll on 4pm!

Bless your heart. :( It is going to be ok. At 4 pm you will be so glad to get to see her. Have you called the vet to check on her? My vet let me do that. It really helped me. It gave me so much peace of mind with my worries.
