Poop more with grain free doggy food? Hi, I was feeding RC for yorkie puppie and just changed to "Now" but she was kind picky so I have chicken strip can doggy food to mix with "Now" I love the size and store lady recommended so we start feeding her but I noticed Truffle (3.1 lbs, 27weeks old girl fed 1/4 cup x2 , it's same cup size RC and "Now" mix w/little bit Chicken strip ) used to poop only 2-3 times a day (small size - medium) but now MOG she's like little poop machine! but big healthy poops 3-4 times a day! Is a healthy for her to poop so much more than other grain dog foods? and which way is healthier for them less poo or lots of poo a day?! Thanks Sorry.... it's all about poo story but it's about baby's poo :) |
Hmmm... I guess it just depends on the doggy. :) Each one is different. For a pup, I wouldn't say 3-4 is abnormal, but if it's more than she used to... maybe you are over-feeding a bit? Which particular Now! formula are you feeding? Some are higher calorie and less needs to be fed. Or maybe a certain ingredient is not agreeing with her, etc. But I'd say as long as they are normal poops (not soft, or runny, etc) then I wouldn't worry too much - food transitions can sometimes take a while. |
Hahahaha! Yup, I totally agree with you. Sheldon will be 22 weeks tomorrow and he is 5.4 lbs. He eats Now grain free and OMG!!! The poopers are extremely big and frequent hehehehe They are healthy too. He goes 4 to 5 times a day, sometimes more, I feed him 3 times a day. No much help here but just wanted to sympathize with you and see what others have to say. I also noticed that he has been swallowing his kibble whole, he is on the small breed and the kibble is so tiny that he hardly chews it. |

I am going to keep eye on her poops!!! lol yes, at least it's healthy poops. ;) |

I am going to keep eye on her about chewing or not because her "Now" is also the small breed kibbles too. ;) |

Now grain free small breed is 430 cal per cup. I notice he eats it faster because he doesn't spend time chewing the kibble, he inhales it like a vacuum machine. I am switching him to a lower calorie food as soon as he is done with this one. |
Gee, Gracie has been on grain free for a long time and has the smallest stools I have ever seen. I have heard that flax seed can cause a dog to go a lot. I'd check the ingredient list to see if there is something that could be causing this problem. |
Yup, Now has flax seeds. |
Flax seeds in dog food and more frequent poo(ing)... interesting. I love learning new things on YT! |
I guess that ground flax seeds are ok in a limited amount but flax seeds can be to much fiber for some dogs. |
Thank you so much for all this great informations!!! I can't believe how much she is pooping and big solid ones! we are almost done with "Now" and thinking about some other good puppy dry foods. I am going to try the Orijen 80/20 and see how she do with it. I found this below..... "thout flaxseed? Not just the Taste of the Wild Salmon, all varieties of Taste of the Wild do not have flaxseed. Canidae Grain Free ALS does not have flaxseed. The regular Adult Orijen also does not have flaxseed. And the new Orijen product "Red" is another one." very interesting! |
Your not the first with this problem. I originally found some of the information here on YT when other people were having some of the same problems. I was also looking for a good grain free recently. I feed raw frozen right now but when I travel I need something that is easier to feed. Somewhere in my search I ran into the flax seed issue. They say the dog cannot even digest the flax seed enough to get the benefits of the nutrients in flax seed. Flax is a very good ingredient if it is ground first. When listed as flax seed it is in the original form that does more harm than good. Orijen seems to be a pretty good grain free. I like the look of the quality of their ingredients. |

so far she is eating and chewing better than "NOW"( with small kibbles) so I'll find out in few days if she reduce poop time or no change.... if it dose not change, then she must be the natural poop machine girl!!! lol |

How is your girl doing with the new food? I reduced the amount of food Sheldon is eating and he is pooping about 3 sometimes 4. I guess that's better than 5 hahaha |

UPdate! Hi Sheldonsmom. hahahah Truffles on "Arjin" with little of chicken strip (can food) and She reduced few time a day!! :D she poops 3-4 times of healthy solid long ones. hahah I'm glad to hear your baby is reduced as well! |
Hahaha, glad to hear! |
When a dog poo's a lot (several times a day, large quantities), it is an indication that their bodies are not using the nutrients from what they take in (food). Grain-FREE food is always best, as grain cannot be broken down and utilized by canines, and grain can cause many allergies. :) |

When a dog poo's a lot (several times a day, large quantities), it is an indication that their bodies are not using the nutrients from what they take in (food) I have been told and have read the Same Thing!! I know Riley's poo's are much smaller, firm and have no smell when I am feeding him his Primal Raw morning and night. :D |
It is really hard to find a grain free that does not use white potato in place of grain. Sweet potato is a much better and more nutritious substitute. However, few use sweet potato exclusively. White potatoes are not a great food for humans to eat on a regular basis much less feed it to our little dogs on a regular basis. Too much starch that raises the glycemic index. There is so much diabetes in dogs these days and it is a diet driven disease. I feed frozen grain free raw and it is the closest to the perfect food I have found but for traveling it doesn't work so I am always checking out the grain free brands to see if any have changed their ways. |

I just looked it up on Nature's Variety Instinct Dry Dog Food | Review and Rating Have you ever used this? I am just a little concerned about a bit too much fiber being in this one, too. The pumpkin seeds and tomato pomace are bit concerning but not a huge issue if they digest well. I would rather see omega3's in the food but I have a supplement anyway. It does seem to be a good choice of a grain free food. Would love to hear of any results anyone has had with it.:) |

We just started Sheldon on this food, he is eating limited ingredient grain free turkey, I am 1st time dog owner and I did a lot of research before deciding what to feed him and I was not aware of the fiber content. I am going to look and compare. |
Just did a quick research and found out that Fromm, Acana foods has the same % as Nature's Variety. 3.5% fiber. Now by petcurean has 4% |
i feed natures variety intsinct frozen raw oscar is doing quite well on it. i just have to say that there is no one food out there that will be perfect for every dog. i guess you just do what is right for your own dog no matter what the ingredients may be... at least that is what i try to do .. |
I really feel that a good grain free raw is one of the best foods you can feed your dog. I am feeding a grain free raw but am looking for a grain free kibble type food for travel since frozen does not travel well. The flax seed that is whole and not ground has been known to create a lot of extra poo in many dogs, small ones in particular. The nutrients of flax seed that is not ground are not able to enter into the dog as it should either. Flax seed is a good ingredient if it is ground but causes more harm than good in it's in it's original state. |
