Zyrtec, Benedryl, Claritin -what works for you? I have read on Yorkie Talk about different people using different allergy meds. I have Latte on 1/4 Tab of Zyrtec. All I've read pretty much agrees that the dosage is 1mg per pound. I would like to know what you like and what has worked for your baby. |

Zyrtec I just looked and my store-brand Zrytec is only 10mg...I am giving her 1/4 tablet...shouldn't it be 1/2 tablet if she weighs 6 pounds? No wonder she's still itchy! |

Have you talked to your vet about this? |

Naturally! Of course...I just never ask the right questions...like, how many mg are in the tablet that he wants me to give her 1/4 of? He said he preferred Zyrtec to Claritin. Believe me, I think I'm his best customer! |

 I just read this: Quote:
Sounds like it's better on inhalant allergies and the dose is 5-10 mg per day. |

Personally, I would never dose my dogs based upon an internet site. I would give what my vet recommended and then, if that did not work, follow up with my vet for further instructions. |

My Vet had Ringo (Westie, 16 lbs) on a full tablet of Zyrtek. My pharmacist friend thought that was a LOT. However, it still didn't work and we quit using it. For his allergies ~ we keep him on a grain-free food, use a prescription cortisone shampoo during the worst months; be vigilant about flea control, use some kind of Omega 3/6 on his food AND he will still need the occasional dose of Prednisone to keep the itching under control. Westies are notorious for their horrible skin allergies. |

For Taycie, she is one Claritin and Chlorphenamine. She can take both when days are really bad. I also have been using medicated Shampoos and she is actually doing SO MUCH better this year then she did last year!! She also has issues with her food, and I am thinking now, looking back, that her symptoms must have to have sooooooooooooooo food related because the environmental ones really aren't bothering her. Her eyes used to run like crazy, and her little ears would be so red inside. |

zyrtec/food allergies, etc My vet recommended Zyrtec over Claritin, I don't know why. (See? I never ask enough questions.) I don't know what that other med you mentioned is-Chlorphenamine?? We are on the first week of the new food trial and I KNOW- I have to be patient-but she's still scratchy-same place, on sides. I am vigilant about flea protection ...alas, it seems to be "the song that never ends"! |

here we go again! Now, she's scooting again! I swear, I don't know what the problem is...is it food, is it environmental? The vet and I think it's both, but I gotta tell you, I'm pretty exhausted, putting ointment on her little butt, hoping that she won't get infected like she did the last time. I can't remember what it's like to have a happy, itch-free, scoot-free little dog!! |

To LuvTaciegirl You were the mommy that had Tacie on the RC Rabbit and Potato, right? I have switched Latte to the RC Hydrolized and she is into her second week. She likes it baked but I ned you to tell me....I am still seeing scratching and scooting and I need to know how patient you had to be before you started seeing that real decrease in symptoms. Please...I want to be saying the same things you are 6 months from now...I know that's how long I have to use the food, but I had a relapse, as you did on the rabbit and potato. When do you remember seeing a LOT less itching into the new food? |

My Vet Derm recommends (for an up to 10lb dog) .5mg/lb. Maybe give your vet/vet tech a quick call to confirm his preference. |

I use Zyrtec/benedryl I did ask my vet, but again, I never ask enough questions...He told me 1/4 Zyrtec (which is 10mg) and 2-2/12 ml Benedryl. BUT I am using Children's Benedryl liquid and it's only half the strength of the adult tablet. See? I should've been more specific with him! I see him again next week...do you think vets and vet techs get sick of mommies like me? I am happier not giving her the cortisone-it wasn't working for her, anyway. |

Yikes! Maybe no more Benedryl-just had a case of diarrhea-maybe the liquid Benedryl? |
