It would be best for you to consult with a vet nutritionist if you want to home cook. :) This is a great site: www.petdiets.com |

I home cook for one of mine and the nutritionist did not suggest doing that. What do I know? *shrug* I will take my uninformed comments somewhere else. :D |

It is not that I found it necessary to get nutrients from commercial food it is that the volume of food I would need to feed the two boys was a bit overwhelming to me. I guess I felt guilty to stop homecooking but wanted the security that they were getting part of their food from a high quality commercial food. I do add balance it and sometime a drop or two of apple cider vinegar. The recipe I use was from that website. I do belive that without supplements homecooking could be unhealthy--unless you REALLY know what you are doing. |
I guess I misunderstood your post. I homecook for one of mine and yes, the volume of food is more than what she ate previously but her weight remains constant. I really like that part of it....knowing exactly what to feed. I hate that with commercial foods, I am always guessing. If I did not hate cooking so much, I would home cook for all of them...but only with a consult with a vet nutritionist. I would want each pup to have an exact amount custom made for them. |
As far as Mikki getting the dry kibble, she only gets a few pieces in between her meals. She isn't eating much of it. She is a high energy little thing and honestly just gets hungry. She will eat maybe 4 or 5 pieces of it and that is it. The rest is the home cooking. I am letting her have the dry as a "snack". It is almost like treats to her I guess. Maybe it is the rice or sweet potato that is causing Mikki's problem. I am not really sure. I may try adding a little pumpkin or more green beans to her food. And see how she does from there. |

How is the green beans and/or pumpkin working? I think I must do the oposite from you, they get the homecooking as a suppliment to the food. After just reading the post about problems with natural balance (dick van patten's natural balance) I may have to go back on 100% home cooking. I just don't have freezer space for more than a couple of weeks worth of food and sometimes I am not home to make a batch (I know pity party.. sorry). I will work it out. |

The two boys eat a LOT.. homecooking it would be 2 1/2 to 3 cups per day. I give them 1 cup evenings now and have the kibble out in the morning. It makes morning a little easier and I don't have freezer space for more than a couple weeks if they are on 100% home cooking. I am thinking of trying it again.. but have to do gradually. |
