Need Suggestions Mikki seems to constantly have issues with going to the bathroom. It is like she is having to try to hard to have a bowel movement. I know adding fiber helps because pumpkin does the trick. But I only give to her when she is constipated. Do I need to change foods? Or is it ok to add something to her meals to increase fiber? Any help appreciated. |
oh i would definitely speak your vet on this one. adding fiber to the diet is very tricky. too much or not enough is never a good thing. |
Will Mikki eat green beans? You might add a few of those to her meals. IDK if it would help, but my two eat green beans on their evening meal and that is all they get for treats except for one Natural Balance LIT bone occasionally. I would ask my vet too just to be sure. |
I know you home cook... so maybe her "recipe" needs to be adjusted. I would talk to either Cathy or a pet nutritionist. What supplement do you use? The supplement I use has a nutritionist that you can email and they can recommend recipes. I now feed half kibble (dick van pattens' natural balance) and home cook. That works for me Good luck |
I would give her a bit of canned pumpkin with every meal. Some dogs, like some people, just need more fiber in their every day diet. Also look at increasing the moisture content in her food. |

i do both because the two boys need the extra calories--they eat a lot morre then Remy. It also makes me feel better that they are getting all the nutrients they need-- even though I am sure they are with the recipe and the balance it. The volume of food I would have to cook is a bit overwhelming to me so I "balance" it with kibble. I did research to be sure I am getting a high quality kibble. I works for me |

I buy a bag of frozen greenbeans and run a few under warm water and cut them up into both if Riley's meals. |

It would be best for you to consult with a vet nutritionist if you want to home cook. :) This is a great site: www.petdiets.com |

I home cook for one of mine and the nutritionist did not suggest doing that. What do I know? *shrug* I will take my uninformed comments somewhere else. :D |

It is not that I found it necessary to get nutrients from commercial food it is that the volume of food I would need to feed the two boys was a bit overwhelming to me. I guess I felt guilty to stop homecooking but wanted the security that they were getting part of their food from a high quality commercial food. I do add balance it and sometime a drop or two of apple cider vinegar. The recipe I use was from that website. I do belive that without supplements homecooking could be unhealthy--unless you REALLY know what you are doing. |
I guess I misunderstood your post. I homecook for one of mine and yes, the volume of food is more than what she ate previously but her weight remains constant. I really like that part of it....knowing exactly what to feed. I hate that with commercial foods, I am always guessing. If I did not hate cooking so much, I would home cook for all of them...but only with a consult with a vet nutritionist. I would want each pup to have an exact amount custom made for them. |
As far as Mikki getting the dry kibble, she only gets a few pieces in between her meals. She isn't eating much of it. She is a high energy little thing and honestly just gets hungry. She will eat maybe 4 or 5 pieces of it and that is it. The rest is the home cooking. I am letting her have the dry as a "snack". It is almost like treats to her I guess. Maybe it is the rice or sweet potato that is causing Mikki's problem. I am not really sure. I may try adding a little pumpkin or more green beans to her food. And see how she does from there. |

How is the green beans and/or pumpkin working? I think I must do the oposite from you, they get the homecooking as a suppliment to the food. After just reading the post about problems with natural balance (dick van patten's natural balance) I may have to go back on 100% home cooking. I just don't have freezer space for more than a couple of weeks worth of food and sometimes I am not home to make a batch (I know pity party.. sorry). I will work it out. |

The two boys eat a LOT.. homecooking it would be 2 1/2 to 3 cups per day. I give them 1 cup evenings now and have the kibble out in the morning. It makes morning a little easier and I don't have freezer space for more than a couple weeks if they are on 100% home cooking. I am thinking of trying it again.. but have to do gradually. |
